I mean say what you want, but he still did say that things would end badly for the Capital Gazette, if they kept calling Trump unqualified.

Hey, I could totally buy into him feeding off Trump's rhetoric. It seems pretty likely to me. All I'm saying is no, his twitter isn't some trump loving shrine like that dude is saying. What's been dug up, however, is typical gamer gate red pill nonsense, however.

Can't disagree there.

Guys like this are the whole reason why public leaders should be careful with their words. It doesn't matter what Trump or Waters meant (though Trump is pretty explicit when he calls reporters enemies of American people), there's always one deranged lunatic just waiting for an excuse to blow up. Always tailor your comments down to the lowest common denominator because it's not always rational, stable people who are listening to you.

What is this?! Reason?!

They're revealing the names of the five people killed. Some of the names I recognize from the newspaper. It's so sad to see local media reacting live on Twitter to the names. A lot of them have been colleagues for years.

And this is the shooter's picture:

I'll say this -- you don't have to be a die hard follower of someone or even something to be mobilized at any given moment. Sometimes a speech or saying will stir a person. I don't think it's a far leap for an already unstable person to hear Trump or Milo's calls about the press and have that be the straw that breaks the camel's back, even if he's not an ardent supporter of theirs. Dude obviously has been stewing an irrational hatred of press, not just the Capital Gazette looking at his twitter feed, and I wouldn't think it would take much to spur him to action.

Which still says Trump and his crew should watch what they say. Shit, I think Milo should honestly be charged with inciting violence.

So . . . what's kinda fucked up is the dude now has 700ish followers.

Pretty sure he had like 20 before this all started.

Everything just needs to come down about 2,000 notches. It's the reason I almost completely ignore the news now.

Do you think Milo's comment was the tipping point in this guy going through with the shooting?

Weird that they zoomed the image in so much. What's the point in cutting off his chin?

RIP to the 5 victims.

Unfortunately this will be forgotten in 2 weeks since he's a white male and the death toll wasn't in the double digits. What a country that we live in.

I have no clue if this specific guy actually did get spurred on by Milo, but I absolutely believe Milo's words are irresponsible in that they could incite something like this, and that alone should be enough to make what he says a crime. Repeated calls for violence against a group of people is terrorism.

But with regards to this dude, if he really was a red pill, and he's a computer engineer, I'd expect he hung around certain parts of the internet where he'd cross paths with those kinds of statements from Milo. So who knows.

This is the wrong mentality, and I actually got in an argument with my father last weekend over this same mentality. The free press is a vital part of how our government is supposed to work. It's the "4th arm." To tune out the news, is to lose the public watchdog of the other branches of government. For someone looking to subvert the USA, having honest people tune out all media is just as good as having gullible people swallow propaganda. Yes, I understand the weariness and unease of mega corporations owning entire swaths of news outlets, but tuning out the news misunderstands the difference between news as entertainment media, essentially competing for your attention against other forms of entertainment, and news as in journalistic investigation. The latter cannot be tuned out. And it's the latter that is being attacked every time people say "Fake news!"

News should be a tool one uses to inform themselves. You can use articles to fact check and dig into public records. News is super important.

People need to seriously look at how to fact check and article, or use a news article to spur further research. It's a vital part of digesting the news. You can be skeptical of everything you read, but that doesn't mean you should tune it out.

I don't know, I have the opposite reaction. I'm glad this is getting publicity for the obvious reasons. But I think about all the inner city and focused crime that happens especially during the summer months and its dead quiet outside of the Chicago Tribune reporting 20 something people shot over the weekend (or whatever regional publication) . We should be giving just as much coverage to the little girl that gets murdered through the walls of her house from street violence. Or when a outdoor BBQ or gathering gets shot up.

He has multiple twitter accounts. He may very well have a personal one out there somewhere. The one we all know is his "legal defense one" Then he made one of a Judge he dislikes.

There's such a thing as too much information. The news is too overwhelming and it's tough to regulate the flow. It's easier just to turn it off/tune it out.

Nobody needs to look into his twitter to find trump connections, it will happen on it's own. Chances are the clown in chief will likely tweet or say something along the lines of "well its a sad thing that happened but that's exactly why journalists shouldn't promote FAKE NEWS!"

I always wondered, but do you think people could develop PTSD symptoms from obsessively (or just being exposed) following the news from tragedy to tragedy? That has to wear on the psyche.

his personal vendetta against the paper was irrational. He filed suit against them for defamation, and the judge noted that he had no idea what defamation meant, and that any legal council would have advised him not to take the case to court. His vendetta against the paper basically amounts to him accusing them of lies, despite printing the truth. You really doubt a guy like that wasn't eating up "the lying and failing press" and "the press is the enemy of the people" rhetoric that has been flying?
Right, I said it's obviously plausible, but he hadn't tweeted for months and hadn't tweeted anything pro-Trump since 2015. Almost everything else was about his court case and his insane rhetoric over it. I don't think it's "clear, very clear", to summarize the original post I quoted, that this is in direct correlation to Trump's or Milo's words re: the media.

Absolutely. I think we see it in individuals on Reset. Not a joke. I think people need to know when to shut it down and focus on the micro.. on the things they can immediately control.

it would be interesting to find out but I bet that's a thing. Being bombarded with a constant stream unfiltered information 24/7 so much so that it actually distorts your world view can't be healthy.

Yeah i was thinking something along these lines. There's at least 2 accounts here and both seem to have been created in relation to the court case and consequent reporting. He might have a personal one or even more like these.

He may have felt emboldened by Trump's rhetoric against the press, but it seems like this is something he would have done eventually regardless of whether Trump was president. Dude was not well.

On that note, he absolutely should not have been able to legally obtain a gun.

I was there. Saw the shooter. Saw a shot person .

A shotgun going off indoors makes more than a noise. It was so loud I thought something in the utility room had exploded.

I mananged enough guts to look out my office door twice . The first time I saw a man march into the capital gazette with a black shotgun braced against his chest. Called the cops right away. The second time i saw woman on the ground. A minute later two policemen with rifles banged on my door and told me to stay put . 10 minutes later a different set of cops escorted me and a coworker outside. The pool of blood outside the capital gazette office was the size of a bathroom rug.

Fuck guns.

Absolutely correct. The man has years of documented mental illness yet here we are more innocent life lost. The NRA will do their typical spin and nothing will get fixed

Control. That may be a key word. It's frustrating to see terrible things happen and not be able to effect a outcome to prevent it. I think people's hearts are in the right place to try and right the ills that are currently running rampant in society.

I'm reminded of FoxNews being blasted on every TV set on every base/post/camp I ever visited/stationed. All that news all the time, the hyper news cycle.

I just used hyper-news cycle in an earlier thread. Is that really a thing or did we just coin a new term?

I feel that way, too. He had been boiling for so long, anything could have made him pop.
