ITT, predict for the NPD May 2018 retail period (May 6-June 2, 2018) for U.S. hardware sales.

What is NPD?: NPD is one of the main retail tracking firms in the U.S., and also about the only one who specifically goes into detail on video games sales. This thread is to predict what the NPD hardware sales will be for the most recent month. NPD months are defined by the National Retail Federation (find calendar links here).
What do I win?: Bragging rights. We also keep track of predictions over the year and have an annual contest using "points." Still just bragging rights, but SalesEra followers have fun seeing how well we can do with it. See here for details on the point calculations.
Why are there still predictions when official NPD numbers are not released?

Since 2010 I guess we don't get official numbers anymore... that doesn't mean we don't get the numbers.

Another Xbox One price cut?!

Just how many times has this happened in the past five or six months?

Anyhoo, I think the PlayStation 4 will go four months on the trot at the top after the Switch took the crown in both December and January respectively.

It's a difficult month to predict:

[PS4] 225K
[NSW] 197K
[XB1] 172K

PS4 down 30% from April; Switch up 15% and Xbox One up 30% due to price cut(s).

June is going to be BIG for the PlayStation 4, with their fantastic 'Days of Play' deals!

Friendly advice but your Switch prediction is going to burn you. May is usually even more slower month than April in terms of hw sales and Switch didn't have noteworthy releases in May to push hw. It's not going to sell over 50K more than in April. Last time console didn't see a drop from April to May was PS4 in 2016 and it had Uncharted 4 in May (and the jump was only 32k units).

Well XB1 is $199 now... can we assume it will be up by a good amount in June???

PS. It is for June... doesn't account it in your May prediction (this thread).

This time PS4 will suffer a much higher sales decline MOM than previous years, due to God of War launch last month with it Pro bundle.

PS4 will do ok with both Detroit and second month of GoW, but obviously not nearly as good as April.

I don't expect the XB1 price cut to have done much, and NSW continuing to coast.

Notes:
We have fully entered the slowest period of the year. There will be a bump in June but don't expect massive sales until September.

Xbox
Xbox One has not seen a good May yet thanks to the lack of (good) deals and continued slowed momentum off April. May 2017 saw the 1TB drop down to $299 at GameStop two weeks into the month and Microsoft dropped the price nationwide 2 weeks later. May 2018 saw a one week $50 price drop on the One S, 500GB $229 / 1TB $249, and a $50 gift card included with every One X purchase the week after. The following week, certain retailers bundled State of Decay 2 with every One X.

The Xbox One averages a decrease of -24%, with a minimum drop of -1% (2017) and a maximum decrease of -36% (2016).

Playstation
The PS4 doesn't drop as much in May compared to the XB1. 2014 and 2016 saw major releases in Watch Dogs and Uncharted 4 which kept sales flat from April (2014) and exceeding it (2016). 2015 and 2017 saw drops in the ~10% range, which shows the strength of the brand going into the Summer. May 2018 doesn't have much going for it and is coming off the massive God of War launch, which had 3 weeks of tracking in April.

All of that averages out to a decrease of -1%, with a rise of +18% (2016) and a maximum decrease of -13% (2015). Removing 2016 and the average falls to a more reasonable -8%.

Nintendo
The 3DS averages a decrease of -6%, with a maximum rise of +3% (2016) and a maximum decrease of -16% (2015). 3DS is another console that didn't drop much in May. It saw rises thanks to the launch of Donkey Kong (2013) and a price cut to the 2DS (2016), while the biggest drop (2015) was continued downturn from the N3DS launch in February.

Switch doesn't have anything massive in May this year so don't expect a boost in sales from April.

Recap
Sales continue to slow down in May from April. Sales can rise if there is a significant enough event like a price drop, massive release/bundle, or both.

The biggest May ever recorded back in the 7th gen was the Wii with 675K back in 2008. Second biggest? Wii again with 338K in 2007.

The biggest May ever recorded in the 8th gen is the PS4 with 207K in 2016. Second biggest? PS4 again with 197K in 2014.

Yea I forgot DKTF May 4 release affected last NPD more than this one probably...but sill *shrugs* I stick with the increase.

I'm willing to bet Nitnendo shipped more Switches to the US this month than last month, and it's still been selling out and restocking all through May, still (at least from online outlets)

And I still think DKTF will have an effect on early May sales and the Pokémon announcement will have affected the last few days of NPD sales.

But thanks for the friendly warning! :D

(And I believe the ps4 was still over $299 in May of 2016? For your example, I mean)
