Update:
https://www.resetera.com/threads/me...-might-no-longer-be-free.104610/post-18832111

Original post:

Long article: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...nknown-data-guru-to-make-millions-on-nintendo

Background story on Media Create:
Hosokawa founded the company in 1994, the year the original PlayStation went on sale in Japan. Predicting that executives in the burgeoning game industry would need sales information to make decisions, he started building relationships with retail chains to ask for point-of-sale data. Over the past decade, investors also began subscribing. Today, he says Nintendo is the most sought-after company from hedge fund clients, which come from as far away as Singapore and New York.

Media Create methodology:
The 25-year-old firm distinguishes itself through close relationships with about 2,000 gaming shops and dozens of publishers, which provide Hosokawa's analysts with weekly point-of-sale and shipment data on hardware and software in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

The data isn't comprehensive, but his analysts extrapolate with what Hosokawa calls "keikensoku." The term is usually translated in English as "rule of thumb," but it literally means "measuring by experience." Clients pay $20,000 or more a year for reports that forecast local and international trends.

Note that they're an 11-person firm:
Hosokawa's 11-person firm is gaining prominence amid increasing disagreement over prospects for the Switch. Media Create's latest data show Nintendo should easily hit its revised target when it reports results next month, suggesting shares could get a much-needed boost after a dismal performance last year.

Prediction for Nintendo Switch's lifecycle:
The Switch is selling strongly across all demographics -- from kids and teenagers to adults -- a feat achieved only by Nintendo's DS handheld device, its best-selling hardware product in history, Hosokawa said. That bodes well for long-term sales.

"We expect its life-cycle to be seven years," he said, during an interview at Media Create's office in Tokyo's Jinbocho district.

Media Create sales data might no longer be free after a company policy review next month:
Media Create's free weekly data dumps have also made it a popular source for gamers, retail investors and arm-chair analysts online. Hosokawa said that is his way of giving back to the game industry, though he's unsure if the practice will continue after a company policy review next month.

"With our data, we're trying to be the infrastructure for the whole industry," he said, explaining plans to expand his data collection to China and Southeast Asia. "I'd like to think that's why overseas investors trust us."

There's more in the link.

When a company is no longer giving data for free, it's usually because of the stakeholders putting pressure on the company, e.g. publishers, clients, etc.

I guess... there's always the Famitsu tracker? This'd really suck, though.

Forgot to mention Media Create Co. is run by 11 people

Let's pool the pocket change we got.
Kickstarter: $20,000 goal for one year sub of Media Create sales data

Have we ever expected Media Create and Famitsu sales numbers to suddenly no longer be free? We probably didn't, and probably took their services for granted. :(

Seriously though, could something be arranged so that people on Era could pool money together and people would post to see the data on ERA?

Even if you could amass the funds, I think it would be against site policy. Consider that this is a public forum, so getting subscriber access and then posting the numbers here would be akin to stealing.

A seven-year Switch life cycle sounds about right. 2017 through early 2023 as the primary hardware era with 2023 and 2024 as swan song years as new hardware replaces it. I could see it being a six-year cycle instead, though, with 2017-2022 followed by a '23 wrap-up after the debut of new hardware.

It depends on quite a few factors that are presently difficult to predict, at least for me.

Anyway, RIP us if true. D: Media Create is excellence.

Isn't that what happens with the white book though?

How weird is it that every other major form of media has public, free sales information (box office, Billboard charts, NY Times best sellers) but for some reason videogame sales are always hidden behind an immense and secretive paywall?

Pooling $ together for it would be nice (would def contribute a bit too, love the MC threads here), but I don't know if the MC people would even allow sharing of the data.
On the other hand, I really don't want to have famitsu tracking as the only source for JP sales data...

Media Create isn't the only tracker out there. Making data completely private means loosing free advertisement, they don't provide something in public that can't be found from Famitsu or Dengeki.

Unless there's similar pressure to all trackers things are unlikely to change in the near future.

One difference is that with the White Book you buy the book once and repost the data. So yes, it's not strictly legal but what can they do about it other than a C&D on the site? With pooling money together for a subscription, once it is known that this subscription account is reposting the information weekly, they'll have cause to terminate that subscription. Then you lose the money you paid and access to the data after that. Doesn't sound like a good idea!

I think I'll just curl up in the corner if this happens.

So much data has been shared from Japan on a weekly basis for years and losing Media Create would suck. :(

End of an era if this comes to effect.
So which tracker is going to get the honor of being our weekly Jp sales thread title, Famitsu or Dengeki?

I only really check to see if switch has passed ps4 lifetime sales. It sucks we might not get to see the number tick over.

i wonder what company with lackluster sales could be pressuring them to stop 🤔🤔🤔

We could create an excel file on a shared drive that only allowed one concurrent viewer at the same time. Use registration date as priority attribute.

It sucks enough that NPD virtually closed its doors to non-payers. This is just twisting the knife.

Damn. MC threads are my favorite and it will be sad to see it go if the paid subscription pushes through.

FFS, have to go imagine publishers are pressuring them because they're all doing pretty badly. Someone should tell them that hiding the information won't stop their games from underperforming or Nintendo making up the majority of the market.

I guess this explains recent Famitsu shenanigans too.

That just sucks if it happens. We still have Famitsu and Dengeki but media-create is the better one. I just hope that we aren't on the same situation like NPD or UK where we don't get the numbers, that would be just sad

I hope they still give data free. I hope it doesn't change, but if they do start charging hopefully we get some form of data, somehow, at least.

I don't post in the Media Creat thread a lot, but I do check it a ton and keep up as much as possible. Would be a shame if we no longer were able to have those discussions.

That would be a shame. I don't think they will go that route though. They've been operating like this for years. Lets hope for the best.

I... Damn. It's the Media Create numbers that brought me to this community to begin with on the other site, so this would especially sting.

I realise posting here isn't about to really affect things, but maybe the old 'week early for paying users, then free access' might be an idea?
