Full subscriptions are untouchable but light subscriptions cost around 1/10 of them and provide double info of what a Dengeki report does.

It we have to buy one it won't be the first time. There was access to one of them for 2 years.
Subscribing doesn't mean that you're allowed to share the data, does it?

If you want to get an idea of what a subscription costs (without tax)

Media Create: Most expensive by far, cheapest is at ¥170.000 per month and gives huge amount of info

Famitsu: Full report at ¥450.000 per month. Light report at ¥30.000 per month, that's the most popular around the world because of accessible price entry.

Dengeki: Cheapest of all three, but as they say you get what you pay for.

Media Create threads are too old to suddenly stop. Even if all trackers stopped providing numbers in public we would find a way to have access to one of them, don't worry for that.

Great to know. Media Create threads are the best. Thank you for everything by the way.

Light Famitsu report would be around $10 per month if 20 users decide to crowdfund.

Full subscriptions are untouchable and only big publishers and companies have access to them since they have everything, from pre-orders, to first day sell-through and extended market analysis. Verification progress is very strict as they include a lot of sensitive info.

Light reports are very basic and mostly small western companies and organizations go for them if they have some interest in Japanese market.

For example Famitsu picollo has
Weekly top 50 sell-through+shipments
Weekly top 5-10 per system
Weekly hardware+software sales per system
Weekly hardware+software market value
Monthly top 50
H1 CY+FY top 300
CY+FY top 300
Small market analysis

🤩

The caveat is that those data couldn't be make public. Maybe just a small portion of it, like the Top 20?

Yoshi and Dragon Ball start to accelerate.

Sekiro could have the 150k opening Devil May Cry didn't achieve.

Next Wednesday 4gamer (if they are indeed stopping) will likely leave a message saying that the following report will be the last one.

Sony hardware sales in Japan. In 2019 they go for lowest sales since 1995 and beating 1995 isn't given.

graph.png
Looks like we found the bully.
Sony couldn't be behind this. SIE is an American company first and foremost. Why would they care about their system's low sales in a region that represents a tiny fraction of their overall market? Their investors won't care one bit since the west has been their focus for 2 gens now.

If Media Create was pressured by anyone to stop providing data, it'll be major third-party pubs like Bamco, Capcom, and Square. Because they are currently knee deep in PS5 development and it'll look bad to their investors if they continue to sideline the market leader for a system that will be comparatively undesirable to the local market. It'll look really bad if Capcom reveals Biohazard 8 for PS5 while all they have for Switch is an overpriced port of Darkside Chronicles.

That should be the absolute minimum expectations for Sekiro.

If it can't even match what Bloodborne launched at 4 years prior that's just bad. Hell, Dark Souls III first week was over 200k.

Also I'm super surprised by how quickly YW4 has fallen on Amazon since its initial listing. Pretty safe to say that franchise's heyday is long past now.

Wow, AC7 beat every single prediction. Bizarre that there were a lot of people thinking it would only sell ~75k copies.

The fact that Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition between 2 popular systems couldn't even outsell the bare-bones port of Tales of the Abyss for 3DS is quite telling of the estate of the franchise in Japan, really pitiful performance. At least Bandai Namco is taking its time with the next mainline entry, they know it is probably their last chance.

I don't think they ever promoted Vesperia as this big release. Always felt like just a throwaway release because they had nothing else for the year. Not sure why people expected that much from it.

Abyss on 3DS had lower opening but good legs. When we get Famitsu first half sales both Switch and PS4 versions should be in top 100 and we'll see how they hold. I wouldn't expect big difference at lifetime sales since digital is a factor this time and Switch version was out of stock for weeks.

But as you said next main entry will define Tales future. If Switch is included as expected there won't be user base excuses. Like Pokemon either Japan cares or not (assuming it's a good entry).

Blame the long lack of Switch stock. I believe Vesperia on Switch would've been WAY higher if BN kept it in stock from the start. I think it took a whole month before stock got replenished?

There were maybe a few thousands lost/delayed sales, nowhere near 10k so the damage was not that big, also digital was there.
Game is still in the low tier of pricing so it should have some legs, especially on Switch, on PS4 there's not much more to expect as usual.

As for how to judge the sales it depends on how you look at it, it compares favourably to Symphonia UP but is bad compared to Abyss for now

In any case I don't think it can be used as either negative or positive sign on the series current state, it's a remaster with next to 0 added value, if anything it's as barebones as Abyss 3DS (that included the extra content from the US release btw), and unlike the west remasters have always been on the low end there.

Small reminder about Symphonia UP LTD and Abyss 3DS sales to give some perspective.

MC CY 2014
555. [PS3] Tales of Symphonia Chronicles <Tales of Symphonia \ Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World> <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.10.10} (¥6.980) - 5.966 / 109.279 (77.228 <68,35%>)
484. [3DS] Tales of the Abyss <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2011.06.30} (¥6.090) - 7.861 / 164.140 (74.173 <62,94%>)

MC CY 2011
[3DS] Tales of the Abyss (Bandai Namco) {2011.06.30} 74.173 / 121,826

With digital and legs Vesperia will end up somewhere in between the two.

Also, Abyss 3DS was the first re-release of the game and this is third one for Vesperia. Plus, the PS3 version sold really well and during a long time ('the Best' SKU?).

Xillia was the beginning of the end and then Zestiria potentially killed all trust people potentially had in the series. They went too crazy with cutting out content in favor of DLC, rushing everything else, and clearly saving stuff for Xillia 2. I really want to know if those decisions came from people higher on the food chain.

For some that's the solution to everything.

What DLC are you referring to?
The only ones they ever did were 100% cosmetic stuff (costume/attachment, that sort of stuff) and one 3h cheap middling epilogue for Zestiria that was offered for free at release.

As for how they developed the series they clearly had a two games approach since Xillia, develop one full new game and then build from it to make an improved version using knowhow and stuff they weren't able to finish (Xillia -> Xillia 2, Zestiria -> Berseria) the point being that cost for the second game was lower and they could release fairly decent games quicker this way.
The approach has some merits but it did end up with the first entries (Xillia, Zestiria) clearly lacking polish while the second were a bit too heavy on the recycling (Xillia 2, Berseria)

It remains to be seen if they will keep this approach, which isn't bad in itself, or not, it's the usual Bandai Namco being cheap on budget stuff so nothing that surprising.

I was referring to the cosmetic stuff with Xillia for example only having four costumes and the palette swaps because DLC became a thing.

I'm actually curious as to whether they'll try another dlc like the Alishia story because I'm not sure that's free if it wasn't for the backlash and there's money to be made off the Tales fanbase.

"The Division 2 ranked 1st. The reputation of previous work is high, especially in North America. It is a title that has attracted great attention before its release and we hope to see it sell in the long term.
One Piece: World Seeker ranked 2nd. Open world games based on popular animations have novelty. LoveR is at 8th place."

Full subscriptions are untouchable but light subscriptions cost around 1/10 of them and provide double info of what a Dengeki report does.

It we have to buy one it won't be the first time. There was access to one of them for 2 years.

I wouldn't mind contributing to a Kickstarter or whatever if we were to do this. We considered doing it at Siliconera years ago, too, and actually even discussed it with Media Create once.

At the time, they also suggested to me that they would be cool with us sharing some of the data with our readers, but it was 5 years ago and I don't remember if we discussed the specifics unfortunately.

I'm in favour of contributing to anything that makes for more educational discussions on here.

I can contribute too. I won't be able to read a thing as it is in Japanese, but I'm sure it will be translated by users as per usual and it will be for the good of the community.

I'd be willing to contribute to a light subscription too if necessary. I'd hate to see anything happen to these threads.

So, what are the current numbers of Tales of Vesperia? Seems like the Switch version keeps selling.

Dengeki last week

It's more or less around the same position in MC top 50 but with no numbers.

Last Famitsu numbers
Week 7
27./26. [NSW] Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition # <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2019.01.11} (¥5.700) - 1.966 / 34.461 <80-100%> (+5%)
Week 6
22./22. [PS4] Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition # <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2019.01.11} (¥5.700) - 2.153 / 56.427 <80-100%> (-27%)

Last MC numbers
Week 4
15./15. [PS4] Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition # <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2019.01.11} (¥5.700) - 5.039 / 53.994 (-32%)
Week 3
17./04. [NSW] Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition # <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2019.01.11} (¥5.700) - 4.598 / 31.186 (-83%)

The game was released week 2, so at week 3 Dengeki and MC were fairly close for the Switch SKU (32k and 31k) and a small difference for PS4 SKU (60 vs 54k)
For Famitsu the gap was bigger, week 6 PS4 SKU (65k vs 56k), NSW SKU 38k vs 34k)

Overall it's probably around ~100k retail both SKU combined it still has a few extra thousands sales out of chart in the tank and a much bigger digital share.
