Let me give you a possible reason as to why now (I could be 100% off of course, and probably am). It's not like I believe in it, but it could be true.
The way I see it, it could be all about Japanese support for PS5.
PS5 will come out a year from now. Let's say that Sony has a few Japanese software deals in place for their launch year, as opposed to PS4 launch. Let's also say that for various reasons (e.g. relative Switch dominance), Sony are not entirely confident how well these will do in Japan.

Now if everything is out in the open, a potential lack of success of some of these games might affect decisions by some Japanese software developers.
Same goes for PS5 sales - if for various reasons they are initially not as good as one can hope, this might also affect the decisions of some Japanese software developers.

On the other hand, if no numbers are out in the open, you control the story and the public perception - we shipped a ton of PS5 in Japan to great acclaim (only a quarter were bought but no one knows at this stage) and some large amount of software (lots of it bundled and the rest just from one of the games, the rest were flops, but no one will know).

This is all out of my ass, I am just giving an example of why Sony could be motivated now as opposed to previously.

Added: You could say that some of these reasons could have also been there in the past - to which I would add:
1. It seems more extreme now, at least to me
2. Different management
3. Some people learn from the past and change their behavior. They "allowed" it in the past, they think it hurt them, so they decided to no longer "allow" it.

All the above assumes that Famitsu and Dengeki also stop at some point before next year, otherwise none of the above makes sense, since numbers will still be out there.
What you say is plausible, although these things (about sales data being public or not) would benefit both Microsoft and Nintendo as well. And even if one or several of system does well right now, it could be benefitial in the long run, just in case if future systems should underperform in terms of sales. Personally, i think its more likely that Media Create wants to offer their numbers exclusively to those who pay, not that they were pressured to stop releasing some of the number to the public for free. And as Herp Alpert mentioned, most 3rd party publishers probably have access to sales data, or could easily have it if they want, so i dont think this is much of an issue for them. Generally speaking, i guess you cant rule it out 100%, i just feel that there isnt enough evidence to say anything more concrete about it. It shall be interesting to see what Famitsu and Dengeki does going forward at least :)

EDIT: I added some text.

Or they went "we need to prove that we can establish good lore for this game, people already know gameplay will be great."
Highly doubt they achieved that, but ok. Can't tell which is better:

the eternal fight between the good kingdom (which is totally Japan, except Pegasus, Pegasus is so pure that despite it's from Europe, we put it in good kingdom), and the bad kingdom (which is totally Europe)

The three kingdoms send their young future leaders to the same school, and you're an instructor there, and you can see this 1000 year old dragon girl.

Not saying the story won't be interesting, but they didn't cut through the interesting part at all, especially when all the fights are against bandits. I think Fate showed big conflict right off the bat, and it got people excited.

It's not like XB2 totally changed XB1 or XBX system. The thing is they clearly have something new: upgrading units at school, the "following soldiers", etc. But none of them was explained properly. It's especially baffling after Fate was universally bashed for the lore and praised for gameplay, IS was like "yeah, I bet LORES are what fans want".
Yeah but Fire Emblem games are more well know than Xenoblade's there's no comparison there, Fates was bashed for having BAD lore not for just having lore and as you said yoursself the gameplay has already been praised, also you are acting like the game is releasing tomorrow there's still 3 months were they will releasing more info and gameplay, the new mechanics will get more time but they aren't going to change the experience drastically hence why the focus on the lore and setting.

I predict 6M for switch this year if they are indeed releasing Animal Crossing before the year's end and they cut he price or release a cheaper revision.

what was the 3DS best calendar year ?

Somewhere. I think.
This was hidden in press release about NicoNico event in April, but Kill la Kill -IF- is out on July 25th in Japan. Apparently this wasn't meant to be in that PR, because it's now been edited out.

[追記:2019年3月14日 17:35 リリース内容に変更があったため記事を一部修正しました]

But can confirm it did say July 25th, and not the only one who saw that:

Thanks as always.

1m for Q1 means great things for the rest of the year. It is not usually a strong quarter for Nintendo.
4m means Switch will be up half million this year.
4,5m means Switch will be up 1m this year.

These aren't small numbers. 3DS sold 4,9m in 2013. Price will determine how high Switch can go, software exists.

I agree but I believe that last year was an abnormally weak 2nd year for a successful system, mainly because of the software output. The growth YoY was disappointing.

If we compare it to its launch year, with a 1m Q1, the Switch would need to sell 200k-300k more than in 2017 for Q2-Q4 in order to reach 4m.

2017 had severe supply issues and 2019 looks to have a stronger software output, so selling significantly more than in 2017 is expected. Without factoring the revision, we are looking at around 4.3m-4.7m units sold. (so 33% increase vs 2017, Q1 is already up by 45-50%)

I think my expectations are reasonable, the revision will have a decisive role but most of the work should be done thanks to its current momentum and the software output ahead.

Does anyone know whats the reason for Yokai watch drastic decline in Japan?..... Why did it fall so hard, when it was the biggest thing 3 years ago.

I also wonder why Pokemon didn't have the same fate.

do it between April to Before E3 imo

This is probably the worst plan Nintendo can do kek.

Like all of us should have known lol. Doing a price drop/HW revision without a big SW title launched at the same day will only waste that big price drop boost there lol. And those drop can only be done a few times before it end up being not profitable.

Does anyone know whats the reason for Yokai watch drastic decline in Japan?..... Why did it fall so hard, when it was the biggest thing 3 years ago.

I also wonder why Pokemon didn't have the same fate.
The Level-5 CEO said it's because older players dropped off, but I'm guessing kids just lost interest to an extent.

Because Pokemon is made by lazy devs that just got lucky 17 Mainline games and 23 years in a row.

Thats possible, but theres been reasons to hide hardware sales for many years due to low hardware sales. The Wii outsold the PS3 big time for the first years for example. Not to mention 3DS VS Vita. Thats why i wonder what made e.g Media Create change their mind on this now, if this should be the reason. And couldnt Media Create just stop posting hardware sales and continue with public software sales in that case?
Perhaps theyve been recieving this pressure for years and someone finally sweetened the deal enough for media creates to cave

An interesting take.

Its popularity was a phenomenon. I also heard the Yokai watch stores are closing, that means there is barely interest from the general public and it continues to decline. I really hope YW4 will be a rebound for the franchise, it looks amazing. Its sad to see a great series decline like that.

It's a kid franchise. That's the typical behavior of 99% of kid franchises out there. The kid market is highly volatile and has always been. In fact, Level-5 was smart in milking the franchise as soon as possible.

There has been so many kid franchises which had been selling a lot for a few years and then disappeared or became irrelevant. E.g., Mushi King by SEGA sold 700k units on GBA in early 2000s.

Pokémon is an exception for various reasons. First, it was the biggest thing back then. The first generation sold 8 million units! Hence, even dropping a lot the franchise is still big. Indeed, the latest game, Sun/Moon, just cracked 4 million. Second, Pokémon has been able to keep older and growing players attached to the franchise thanks to a multi-layered gameplay that allowed for both casual and hardcore gameplay. Then, being a worldwide franchise, The Pokémon Company has always had resources to promote and advertise the franchise. Advertising is key in the kid market.

Pokémon does a good job balancing for all youth age ranges and is able to hold onto older fans. Youkai watch really aimed strongly at the 4-7, and all them grew up and out of the franchise. The older fans lost interest when they ran out of memes.

None of my students talk about youkai watch anymore. They certainly don't watch the cartoon. Maybe the new game can get them to play it, but right now Youkai Watch has nothing appealing to 7-12 year olds.

Yeah, its plausible, but i dont think theres enough to go by to say that this is the case. It can also be that Media Create does this on their own in an attempt to sell more subscriptions. It wouldnt be much use to just stop one sales tracker from giving out data for free. We'll see how it goes with Dengeki and Famitsu. Hopefully they dont stop at least.
