Comg pre-orders comparison (the trend at other retailers for these two games isn't very different). For many big Switch sellers, last 1-2 years a x1000 multiplier gives a good idea for the opening.

Pokemon Sword / Shield double pack is counted x2. It ended with 766 pre-orders and first week orders were 1.444. First week physical sales in Japan were 1.365.000.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons ended with 805 pre-orders.

Trending more towards 1:2000 recently.

For the most part, things are business as usual. While school is out, museum closures, concert cancellations, and and the administration has advised against Hanami, most everyone still goes to work, can go shopping eat out at restaurants, etc. Comparatively Japan has not been hit as hard as a bunch of other countries. Most people are not afraid to go out, many even choose to do so without masks. The parks are packed with children too since they don't really have any school or homework. Tomorrow is a national holiday, and that will help with sales as well.
"Choose," huh.

Develop DQXII for Switch spec in mind, scale up for PS4 with 60FPS, better visuals, etc would be the smart move for sales, but maybe Horii will find the allure of playing with the PS5's new toys and developing exclusively for PS5 too tempting to resist.
If they make it with switch in mind we could see DQ12 in all it's glory on ps5 @4k 60fps. Could we even see 8k checkerboard?

Not stellar but between the drop in Japan but the rise in overall sales to reach that 5.5 million 3 months ago means international sales are making up a bigger portion.
Hopefully that trend of increased Western sales ratio continues with 12. They'll be looking at MHW thinking there's big potential.

Well I suppose they could have not had any at home and were unable to buy any when it sold out. There was plenty of time to prepare as people didn't go crazy with hoarding toilet paper, masks, etc until the day Abe announced plans to close the schools. Even I who rarely wears mask because I don't have allergies had some at home that I could wear.

I had trouble finding them long before that : /

For fully understanding Dragon Quest XI performance we would also need to know the number of consumers who double (or tripled) dipped for the 3DS, PS4, PC and NSW versions, both in Japan and abroad.
DQXI was released on 4 platforms but each release was quite scattered and different from each other.
The 3DS release was a demake of the PS4 version which was the main version with nods to lapsed gamers, PC version was aiming for players outside Japan, Switch version was a "definitive edition" with numerous extra but released 2 years later.
SquareEnix really went out their way to make DQXI as spread as possible, it wasn't just a standard PS4/XBO/PC multiplatform game.

Could probably see Switch 2 + PS5.

While these are nice theories on paper, timing has to be considered first and foremost, they were able to course correct the imminent sales failure of DQXI PS4 because they had the 3DS to fall back on, if PS5 is being considered first then 2025 is the earliest they should target to release at the console peak year which would have... a 6-7M install base, there will be no 3DS to fall back on, NSW will be dead and NSW 2 only around 2 years in the market (think a 5-9M install base).
Basically they'd be repeating the same mistake than DQXI but with less guarantee to reach big sales to begin with.

On the other hand if NSW is supposed to be the lead platform, it's already probably too late, either they won't have a game ready by 2022 (which is the more likely option) or even if they do the other(s) platform(s) would be a dead PS4 and/or a PS5 with a 3-4M install base ?

So that leaves the NSW2 as the lead platform... but what year are we talking about then?
It would be probably need close to 3 to 4 years for the install base to be big enough (12-15M range) for that, with that supposed hardware release date to be nowhere in sight we're already thinking of 2026+, that's a huge gap

To make it short

2022
  • Missing NSW peak year
  • PS4 not a factor in its life
  • PS5 having a minimal install base (3-4M max)
  • NSW2 not existing
Potential platform combination
  • NSW/PS4/PS5
  • NSW/PS5
  • NSW exclusive
  • NSW and PS5 late port in 2023
  • NSW and PS5/NSW 2 late ports in 2024

Sales in Japan
NSW leading by a wide margin (2-2.5M if multi, >3M if exclusive even if temporary), others maybe reaching a million combined, further decline from DQXI likely but might not happen if one of the two latest platform combination is chosen.

Likelihood of release that year
Low, DQXII probably won't be ready by 2022 so I won't comment on the platforms choice

2023
  • Missing NSW peak years
  • PS4 dead
  • PS5 with low install base (4-5M max)
  • NSW 2 not being released and/or just released
Potential platform combinations
  • NSW/PS5
  • NSW exclusive
  • NSW, PS5 and/or NSW2 late ports in 2024 (with PS5 and NSW2 at >5M)

Sales in Japan
NSW leading by a notable margin (>2M), others maybe reaching a million combined, further decline from DQXI expected
Last scenario is the more optimal one sales wise though but the lost sales of releasing a year later on Switch might not be offset by the growth of the install base of the others two platforms

Likelihood of release that year
Medium, if they want to proceed with DQXII development it would be a possible scenario.

2024
  • NSW a dwindling platform
  • PS5 with low install base (5-6M max)
  • NSW 2 too early in its life and a low install base (4-7M)
Potential platform combinations
  • NSW/PS5
  • NSW/PS5 with NSW2 late port in 2025
  • NSW and PS5/NSW2 late ports in 2025 (with PS5 and NSW2 at >5M)
  • PS5 exclusive or NSW2/PS5

Sales in Japan
NSW maybe leading (~1.5M), others reaching a million combined and more, further decline from DQXI expected
Last scenario is a suicidal one, it would be akin to PS4 exclusive in 2017 without 3DS to fall back on.

Likelihood of release that year
Low-Medium, it's a year sandwiched between two where the game would be better off sales wise, if they can't ship in 2023 and don't want to wait for 2025+ that might happen though but it's not a sensible choice.

2025
  • NSW shouldn't be considered at that point
  • PS5 peaking (6-8M install base)
  • NSW 2 picking up but not at its peak year yet (6-11M install base)
  • Some other wild platform that can't be predicted maybe
Potential platform combinations
  • NSW2/PS5
  • It's hard to project another combination at this point but things might change

Sales in Japan
NSW2 leading (>1.5-2M), PS5 >1M, further decline from DQXI expected

Likelihood of release that year
Medium, depending on how things unfold (good PS5 sales, NSW2 releasing early) it's a possibility

2026
  • PS5 install base peaking (7-9M)
  • NSW 2 close to peak year (8-14M install base)
  • Some other wild platform that can't be predicted maybe
Potential platform combinations
  • NSW2/PS5
  • It's hard to project another combination at this point but things might change

Sales in Japan
NSW2 leading (~2M), PS5 >1M, 50/50 on decline from DQXI

Likelihood of release that year
Medium, if 2022 is not possible and they want to have the best timing for the release considering the platform choices I'd say this is what they could aim for.
Alas it's not in a near future, unknown things might happen and betting too early on non released platform(s) didn't bode well last time.

With so many scenarios and predictions about a big game in a single post, I'm fully ready to eat crows in a few years when a near impossible scenario to predict ends up happening though :p

And before looking at MHW success for the west, they should be clever enough to first target/expect a success closer to... Nier, Persona, Octopath Traveller... which are games much closer to what DQ is than the Monster Hunter IP

Hopefully that trend of increased Western sales ratio continues with 12. They'll be looking at MHW thinking there's big potential.

Do you have any numbers to back-up that?
To me it looks like that ratio might have increased... because the sales were lower in Japan... and the sales were lower in Japan because they targeted the west more than usual. Western sales didn't increase notably. A self fulfilling prophecy.

Only source we have is the 5.5M worldwide by 31/12/2019, with 3DS+PS4 in Japan at ~3.2M retail by 31/12 /18.
That 3.2M for 3DS+PS4 can easily be rounded up to above 3.5M with digital and another year of sales (mainly digital though, retail was already super low in 2018), add the NSW SKU at ~500k and japanese steam release (statistical noise though) and that leaves 1M < x < 1.5M outside Japan, while releasing the game on all potential platforms that could be considered the market leader on their segment (PC/PS4/NSW), that's absolutely not a big achievement, not when others JRPG IP mentioned above are able to do more than that while being released exclusively on one platform.

Also probably important that we make a distinction between international and western sales. Asia got memed to death but it is a small but notable piece of the pie for some games.

So if COMG were a good indicator, AC retail week 1 will be less than 1 million? Or am I missing something? (personally I still don't think COMG is a good indicator of anything)

For Comg things are very simple.
Comgnet's sample is so small that you can't compare different games among different or even the same systems. There is an estimate for top sellers but extrapolation from points doesn't work.

For now multiplying x1000 usually gives a rough estimate for Switch games at top spots, Playstation 4 multipliers are all over the place. If you want to have a base of comparison for Modern Warfare, last year Black Ops IIII did 574 points at first week and 230 points at second. Actual sales won't be so low for Modern Warfare but all retailers hint at big decline.

The PC Engine mini is pretty cool. The UI is nice, but there is a lack of options for decent looking backdrops and there are no filters. Which is sort of fine with me. It has some really cool animations for inserting a Hu Card or a CD and features the cute PC Engine cartoons, so that's nice. One problem I have with the physical hardware is absolutely no light to show when it's on. That's kind of shitty. The controller is decent, but the games I'm playing now don't really deal with diagonal movement well, so I can't tell if it's decent on that front. It's kind of uncomfortable after a while.

The library is pretty decent, but could be better. Castlevania is the standout star, but it could have used more Falcom games. Like, say, Legend of Wind Xanadu would have been cool to see. Maybe the PC Engine version of SMT. Maybe a few more JRPGs in general? There are a bunch of games, but there are something like 34 games and I counted 15 shooters.

So far I've played through Ys I & II (I just started II!) and some of Neutopia. You can really tell the console was somewhere in between the Famicom and Super Famicom with some of the older games. The hit detection is a little bit off, for example.

It's cool that they included both libraries and it makes a lot of sense, given how anemic the western side appears to be, but I would have rather had the Japanese versions of games for the Japanese version of the console and maybe a wider variety of them.

I would have really liked to see these consoles release with expansion ports (shaped, like say, a Hu Card?). Release a set of 10-20 games on each.

Thanks for the PCE mini impressions Encephalon.
If I remember correctly even the original PCE lacked the power on led (PCE Duo/R have it though) and yes PCE is famous for its shooting games.
Enjoy Ys 1 & 2 Book there are astonishing games considering when they were released (the english VA was far superior to any other attempt done for videogames until that point) and more important they are still fun to play with amazing music.

There's still stock for Switch Lite in Japan. Nintendo was serious when talking for no supply problems until the end of March.

What's the numbers for dq9 which I believe is the highest?

It's not a coincidence if Square-Enix went public with the 5.5M number for DQXI, that's probably around what DQIX sold worldwide

According to Square Enix, 4.26 million copies of the game were sold in Japan as of March 2010.
As of the ending of Nintendo's fiscal year 2010, Dragon Quest IX sold 1.02 million copies in the United States and Europe

Add extra sales from the Ultimate Hits SKU in Japan (which happened to release in March 2010) and possible extra shipments outside Japan and it's around the 5.5M milestone worldwide as well.
