Dragon Quest VIII (PS2):
As July 2013
WW: 4.90M
JP: 3.80M
Abroad: 1.10M

Dragon Quest IX (DS):
As July 2013
WW: 5.51M
JP: 4.40M
Abroad: 1.11M (as Dec. 2013)

Dragon Quest X (Wii):
As July 2013
JP: 0.70M

Dragon Quest XI (3DS, NSW, PS4, PC):
As December 2019
WW: 5.50M
OK so in December, 11 matched 9. Now it's surely passed it. As a standalone achievement 9 is only on one platform so it's the most impressive but it's still good to see 11 beat it. And in the end the gap will be bigger.

Hopefully DQ12 grows the franchise further.

Because the real version is the HD one. They created the 3ds version when they understood that ps4 alone would be bad for the franchise, making dq11 an even more expensive product.

If they released dq11 hd version only, i think we would be looking to something like 4 miilions copies.

That's hard to say since Monster Hunter sold 3 million + on PS4 alone and DQ is a bigger franchise in Japan.

Double dippers could be inflating the number but at the end of the day sales are all that matter even if Square Enix had to do a lot more with XI to achieve roughly the same amount as IX.

It's complete nonsense they call what is essentially a game and its remake 'the same game'. They would have like 1% max assets and code in common.

Trials of Mana might be a small hit.
Many times more these numbers
Oh, that's very good to hear! The remake has a great scope and budget trade-off (basically not as bombastic as FF7R but great polish within its scope) and everyone seems to love it. Glad to hear it's resonating!

About the numbers:
Code:
PS4 Secret of Mana 28.171 46.104 Square Enix 15/02/2017
PSV Secret of Mana 14.019 23.731 Square Enix 15/02/2018

Those are small but not bomb-like numbers. If it's many times that, we should be looking at an opening of over 100k, I guess?

I'm guessing it will be a world wide hit. They are handling the marketing well and the demo helped. A good example of how to do a medium budget game.

Would there be any advantages for them to split the games into two different reportings, or having one reporting where they specify the sales for the different versions? And what would that potential advantage be? I think they include both games into one because its part of the same budget and development time, and it is in a general sense the same game (graphics aside of course + some smaller things if i'm not mistaken).

Switch Lite stock problems have started in Yodobashi Camera. Just at the end of the day, so this week's overall sales should't be affected. We'll see if there is a new shipment next week.

Edit: Just checked Amazon.jp and they are sold out too.

I mean of course they report them together, they have pretended they are the same game all along. There would be no business advantage splitting them because it would make their numbers look worse. And people mostly play along, so SE can pretend the expensive HD Dragon Quest was a success to this level despite numbers being propped up by a separate game and double dippers.

'In a general sense' Resident Evil PS1 and Resident Evil Gamecube are the 'same' game too. It is absolutely the equivalent of a game and its full ground-up remake.

Seeing Trials of Mana remake with many times more the sales as the 70k for Secret of Mana on PS4/Vita would be fantastic to see.

Yeah, since they didnt intially planned the 3DS version, adding this during the development process of DQXI would have increased the budget, thats true. But budgets are more of an estimate (especially very early on) and can fluxuate for different reasons (a game can be delayed for various of reasons for example, which would also increase the budget). I think the 3DS version was added about 3 years before the intial release, so it would still be within the same/final budget in this regards when it comes to DQXI.

I'm not sure it matters that much how they report it. As for us who want to know the splits between the different versions, we do know aproximately how much the 3DS version sold because it was only released it Japan, so we can see that regardless of the 5.5 million number that Square Enix reported :)

I see what you mean, but i dont think Square Enix is trying to predent anything in this case. I mean, its public information (or what i shall call it) that DQXI was released of several of platforms, 3DS included. Maybe some people dont know about the 3DS version since it was only released in Japan, but thats more on them in that case (no problem about that of course). And if Square Enix split the numbers, it might have looked worse indeed, but on the other hand, then people can just add those numbers together and see the total sales adding up to 5.5 million anyway :)

I agree with you that the games are basically two different games on a technical level, but i dont think its nonsense that they reported the sales in this way when the game was planned for several of different platforms. Maybe i could be more clear on that, but its the combination of both things, both it being the same game in general and also being planned for multiple of systems at the same time. I thought you meant that it was nonsense in general that they reported the sale of the version combined, thats why i wondered if it would be better for them to announce the numbers differently (but i see now from your reply above here what you mean with this). When it comes to the investors, i think they're mostly interested in seeing how much the total budget was and how much it made in profit.

About Resident Evil 1, thats true, but REmake for Gamecube was not a part of the initial RE1 release like DQXI was for PS4 and 3DS in comparison. If the 3DS version of DQXI was released about 6 years after the PS4 version (or rather a 2D/3D version, since the 3DS wouldnt be an active system at that point) and wasnt initially planned or worked on when they made DQXI, it would be a more similar situation as with RE1 and REmake. Then it would be two different budgets and two different releases in that regards, and i would find it more natural of them to report both releases seperately in that case.

EDIT: Just added a bit of text for better clearification.

A better (similar) example was Bandai Namco/Level 5 talking about the first Nino Kuni selling over 1.5mil(can't remember the exact figure) in the run up to the release NNK2; that figure was true... if you included the ~600k from the JP only DS game.

I'd be more willing to combine the DQXI SKUs than Ni no Kuni DS and PS3, since those both weren't released simultaneously and are not similar in content (HD vs 2D and such).

What, they actually did that?

Yup, or at the very least they didn't correct that assumption from interviewers.

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom Could Be Taking The 'J' Out Of JRPG

We saw Ni no Kuni II in action, and spoke to Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino about the direction Level-5 is taking with the critically acclaimed series.

Also in terms of wonky accounting we should probably shout out any market analysis which talks about the resurgence of home consoles in Japan off the back of the Switch.

The PS3 version of Ni No Kuni shipped 1.33M worldwide.

That is very misleading as the DS version wasn't even called Wrath of the White Witch. But IIRC they were presented as the same game in the marketing even after the PS3 game was delayed.
It's doubly weird when Level 5 even gave the DS version a different official western subtitle (Dominion of the Dark Djinn).

Reading again the quotes about making the sequel for the wester audience in mind knowing the game bombed was pretty painful.

High bar to beat but do you think they can?

Nogami be like:

I think that was harbingers of things to come honestly...

We have a reason why Demon Slayer is a PS4 exclusive now...

Note the developer.

Don't worry, there will be a port.

For PS5.

Man, it saddens me to think that the sales-potential of that franchise will never be fully achieved.
Switch+Early 2020 and it would have sold like crazy (300k+ easily), but with PS4+2021, even in the best scenario it won't even reach 100k

Irony is, that Fate cooking game on Switch (just got a new trailer to boot) by Aniplex is coming in May, but only on the eShop.

Also the dev is confirmed to be Grid... who's a newcomer seemingly as they haven't knowingly put out anything yet. Wonder who they are.
