There is exactly one new release at retail next week and that's a low profile 3DS game, long runners will top the charts.

Kirby is really crushing YSO's expectations, especially its legs :

01. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies < 210k (average 190k) [week 1]
01./00. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies <ACT> (Nintendo) {2018.03.16} (¥5.980) - 223.811 / NEW <60-80%>

01. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies < 70k (average 60k) [week 2]
01./01. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies <ACT> (Nintendo) {2018.03.16} (¥5.980) - 94.150 / 317.961 <60-80%> (-58%)

Out of the top3 [week 3]
??

Really amazing for the little guy, it's been a decade since it made it to the million-seller club. Now it seems that the real question is when.

April an May and super slow months for sales, if not the worst.
Next week numbers will be the last "good numbers" for a while. Starting April, be ready for drops everywhere. Zelda baseline won't be 10k anymore, and the same for other games and systems.

If Labo flops, very boring weeks and months incoming.

I expect higher shipments for Golden Week, especially since it coincides with the Labo release. As for May, I think the Switch can maintain the 45k-50k base line that we're currently seeing. There are quite some high-profile games coming out in May, both first-party and third-party. I have more fears for June than for May.

In normal circumstaces, what one should expect is a drop below 40k for Switch in April. Golden Week will only bring it back to over 50k, just to fall again below 40k the week after. This is a very low season for sales.

Of course, if Labo is successfully enough, sales will be better than these projections.

is labo being tracked like it's a regular game by MC/Famitsu?

maybe they'll consider it a peripheral or some sort of interactive toy?

It will be treated just like WiiFit, a game that appears to have a peripheral, so it is going to be tracked by MC/Famitsu ;)

Right

Two different games so ToyCon 1 and ToyCon 2 will be tracked separately.

Still waiting for a more in depth look to five interest. We're less than one month away and there's no hype

June should be fine with Mario Tennis and Sushi Striker, presumably. I think June is generally a better sales month than May.

GEO is counting the two Labo games together in their preorders chart so I don't know what format MC and Famitsu will choose.

The logic would be to count them separately since it is two very different games. We are not in the case of two versions of the same game imo (like with Pokemon, YW...).

GEO combines multiplatform SKUs in their preorders, so they're already not a good indicator. They are also combining the two Persona rhythm games, which I can't see being tracked like that in MC or Famitsu. I think its safe to assume MC and Famitsu will track the Labo kits separately unless we hear differently.

I just mean Switch retail releases. Its Tropical Freeze port at beginning of month and Dark Souls at end of month. Not very impactful.
It's a leap forward from last year's May. That's for sure. Labo releasing late in April should help HW move at a good clip. So there is something to ease the blow. I know Tropical will do well in the West but I worry about 2D platformer fatigue setting in with it releasing so close after Star Allies.

I don't think fatigue will occur after just two games (which are very different). Plus they're about 2 months apart.

So that explains why there's been shortages of PS4 HW in Japan. They've been getting less catches thanks to overfishing.

You might not wanna look up how bad overfishing and climate change has affected the ecosystem of the oceans over the years with how species of fish have had their numbers dwindling.

I'll take this singular Yoshi game even if it means they never make another DKC again.
There hasn't been a good Yoshi game since 1995. Meanwhile, the Donkey Kong Country series keeps getting better and better. It's a shame that the sales—particularly the Japanese sales—don't reflect that. What kind of debut are we looking at for the TF port?

Yoshi's Woolly World was fantastic.

And DKC Returns (Wii and 3DS) sold very well in Japan. The only reason Tropical Freeze didn't is because it was a Wii U game.

If the NSMBU rumor is true, I will at least agree having literally all your 2D platformers release in the same year is a bit much.

They are spaced apart at least...

maybe I'm not optimistic today but I have a feeling Labo will flop.

but maybe its success will be determined in the long run and not the opening week or two.

The NSMBU rumor is so dumb that I actually believe it. Yeah, many of the Wii U's best games deserve to have a second chance on Switch, but NSMBU was criticized for being derivative six years ago. And that was before they released a cell phone game that has an identical art style.

Nintendo should cancel both and give and divert those resources into a new Fatal Frame.

God, I would love a new Fatal Frame. I think Fatal Frame 5 did fairly well for a niche Wii U game, so maybe a sixth title is in the works. I would even take ports/remasters of the Wii/WiiU games honestly.

maybe I'm not optimistic today but I have a feeling Labo will flop.

but maybe its success will be determined in the long run and not the opening week or two.

This is exactly the case. It should have a sales pattern similar to toys, which don't have a huge debut but increase in popularity over time as word of mouth spreads, leading up to a busy holiday season.

That being said, I still expect it to have a pretty good first week. Just nothing on the level of Mario Odyssey or Splatoon 2. Maybe more similar to Kirby combining both sets.

Wolly World on Wii U was above 1.4 million copies last time Nintendo told us the numbers.

No surprise a sequel is happing. Plus Wolly World is a great game, just becuase you dislike it doesn't mean it's bad.

The NSMBU rumor is so dumb that I actually believe it. Yeah, many of the Wii U's best games deserve to have a second chance on Switch, but NSMBU was criticized for being derivative six years ago. And that was before they released a cell phone game that has an identical art style.

It's clear that Nintendo started working (or asking to work) on Switch ports of Wii U games from the beginning.

Some of them became enhanced portings, like Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Pokkén and Tropical Freeze; some of them were "promoted" to full-fledged sequels/new entries, like Splatoon and Mario Tennis. My feelings is that some enhanced portings were pushed back and promoted along the way, such as Super Mario Maker and, possibly, New Super Mario Bros. Instead of a porting we might see a New Super Mario Bros. collection or something like that, which would be perfect during holidays.

New Super Mario All-Stars could be fun. NSMBU+NSLU+Maker+extra levels could be good too. My fear is that it might just end up being straight NSMBU/NSL ports and nothing else though, for $60.

3,5/5 stars difficulty for YSO next week.

Switch software will take top places since there is lack of new releases, maybe Super Robot Wars X will slip into third place if a version remains over 10k at its second week.

So that explains why there's been shortages of PS4 HW in Japan. They've been getting less catches thanks to overfishing.

You might not wanna look up how bad overfishing and climate change has affected the ecosystem of the oceans over the years with how species of fish have had their numbers dwindling.

So judging by that joke tweet, the PS4 is still supply constrained? Got mixed signals in this thread, with people saying the 20k baseline was proof it was over. But could the situation improve and the baseline go back to 30k+?

Looking at recent Famitsu numbers, they estimate Switch software's digital ratio to be around 10~15%, at least looking at games which are new on this list. For PS4, it's anywhere from 12 to 32%.

Doing a little math for the Switch's evergreens (since there are only two new games otherwise) based on Famitsu's last numbers up to this period (ending 25 Feb):
[NSW] Splatoon 2 (2017.07.21) - 182.446 Digital / 2.053.828 LTD (8.88% Ratio)
[NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (2017.10.27) - 113.419 Digital / 1.567.958 LTD (7.23% Ratio)
[NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017.04.28) - 92.507 Digital / 1.341.608 LTD (6.90% Ratio)
[NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017.03.03) - 67.858 Digital / 825.289 LTD (8.22% Ratio)
[NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (2017.09.22) - 21.409 Digital / 219.055 LTD (9.77% Ratio)

Anyone who knows more about this stuff, does this seem realistic? Nintendo has a reputation for a lower digital ratio, but it seems low even for that to my eyes.

Famitsu Digital estimates are not worth the ink they are printed on.

One of its estimation criteria is historical performance, which produces results that reinforce the conventional wisdom. They have also replaced their numbers once they are publicly revealed by publishers once.

The only way to get real numbers is from the publishers themselves, which Japan does not do.

The type and size of the game plays big part at digital sales. At the moment 15-20% for PS4 and 10% for Switch as very average ranges look right.

In Japan for the end of September we have the following numbers from the official trackers:
Splatoon 2 – 1,19M
Switch - 1.78M

While Nintendo themselves provided a much higher figure for Splatoon 2 for the period ending in 10/1/17:
Splatoon 2 - 1.56M
Difference - 370K

According to Nintendo Splatoon 2 had an attach rate of around 60% by the end of the year in Japan. While according to M-C figures at the time Splatoon 2 had 53% attach rate and 51% according to Famitsu. So in order for Nintendo to be correct Splatoon 2 digital sales for 2017 would have to be between 250-300K.

This should give you an idea of Minecraft's potential digital sales in Japan since it's been constantly above all other games on the eShop since May(so two additional months compared to Splatoon 2 and much bigger digital sales during December), my guestimate for Minecraft Switch is >750K at this point for Japan.

There's been months that Minecraft switch was completely missing from famitsu's "figures"
