PS4 software is fucking dead. Just four games in the top 30 and three of them couldn't crack 3,000 copies sold.

For some reason interest for Splatoon 2 is increasing since holidays despite events being cancelled.

I think it has to do with the fact that Switch userbase is likely becoming younger and Splatoon 2 is really popular among kids. This is also shown by the fact that Minecraft keeps selling well, basically on par with last year (Mario Kart even more than last year). Pokémon definitely helped in expanding the userbase towards kids.

It seems Mary Skelter Finale is actually planned for simultaneous release on PS4 and Switch. Should work better than late releases.

I wonder — if Game Freak turns it all around and gen 9 turns out to be as critically lauded and beloved by fans as New Horizons will Pokemon as a series be able to catch back up to Animal Crossing?

Because as it stands now it looks like it's getting left in the dust.
Let's not act like Pokémon is doing badly.

It had its best launch ever globally. It beat SM's launch in Japan and wasn't that far behind others (and that can largely be put down to the shift in the Japanese games industry as nothing gets those numbers anymore)

Well I'd be happier, that's for sure.

Exactly. None of this means that Pokémon did not hit its potential - all of us were raving about how well Pokémon was doing just a few months ago, remember? And it's still well on its way towards 5M+ lifetime sales, which is great for the franchise however you look at it.

It's simply that Animal Crossing is blowing any expectations the fuck up, and is doing frankly unprecedented stuff (it could go to 8M+, even - although that remains to be seen of course - which would make it the biggest game ever released). At such a performance level, we should be talking about more factors than just 'good game on Switch will sell tons'.

Somewhere. I think.
3rd time. Never forget 400k of Knack.

And the few hundred people who actually bought it standalone, ending with 2 copies :P

Speaking about female users on Switch, if I had to take a guess in the dark I'd expect a new Style Boutique for next fall and a new Tomodachi for spring next year.

That seems like the most likely scenario for those two games, provided they do exist of course (well, Tomodachi definitly does). Though I guess they could try to have Tomodachi out in December, but March/April 2021 would be ideal. I remember Tomodachi Life did come out a bit too soon after AC New Leaf (within 6 months iirc).

11./00. [NSW] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III <RPG> (Nippon Ichi Software) {2020.03.19} (¥6.980) - 6.280 / NEW <40-60%>

That's more than I was expecting.

Does 80-100% 1st week for a known leggy evergreen means it exceeded Nintendo's expectation?

Considering there's been no reports of shortages, no. It sold as expected, from both retailers and Nintendo expectations.

A leap that Animal Crossing has had is unprecedented. Selling more than the last four games' first weeks combined in its first week. It's quite astonishing.

Seeing people use it as a means to diminish Pokémon is just bizarre when Pokémon just broke records.

Speaking of Game Freak, I wonder if the move will still happen as planned. Same with the Nintendo Tokyo studios. If they're moving to the same building like some people think, I guess there will be some cross-pollination of tools

Closer the shipment is to retail sales more accurate we will see how much it did digitally when quarterly reports come.

wonder if they'll ship another million in for second week or is it too much? Safe bet at least 500k imo

Dengeki

AC New Horizons: 1,831,859 units sold. 90% sell-through.

Switch market share this week:

Software: 95.9%
Hardware: 95.4%

dengekionline.com

Heh, Dengeki estimates 15% digital sales. Now we know where Famitsu estimates come from.

Unless I'm misreading this, they're saying that IF digital ratio is 15%, then it has sold over 2m, not that they estimate digital sales at 15%. They did the same for Pokémon Sword and Shield, now that I think about it.

Yeah, but they could have said if it is 25% then is almost 2.5m, but chose just 15%. :)

No, but alot of people are going to have to buy digital. It's a shame RE3/FF7R couldn't have come out just a couple of weeks sooner. Hopefully the loss of physical sales is made up for with the increased profit of a digital purchases.
I mean, I've already bought them. I can't just go digital. I can't be the only one.

Luckily I bought them in the same city where I live.

So does ffvii get postponed again?

What makes you ask that? Coincidently, the 7-Eleven nearest home has a banner for a few weeks for FF7R preorder, but it was replaced today. Now it is possible that SE only payed long enough to keep it up for a week or so, but I'm surprised they didn't keep it up until closer to launch.

It was just a thought, but it sounds silly to me now. Even if Tokyo, etc. can't purchase the game, other places in Japan will be able to.

Then again, that does sound suspicious. I'll check my local 7-11 to see if the banner is still up there. And even if Japan still has non-essential retail open, it sounds like that not be the case for overseas?

Damn, I knew Zelda isn't the most popular franchise in Japan, but Animal Crossing did in one week what BotW couldn't do in 3 years. Mental.
Animal Crossing has done so spectacularly that I think comparing other games to it can create false expectations

Breath of the Wild has done really well! Best-selling Zelda ever! The number of publishers who would perform human sacrifice to have one of their games sell that well (even the Square half of Squeenix) is real high.

Oh sure, I didn't mean it like I was trying to downplay botw's success haha. It's a fantastic game and all of it's sales are deserved, I just pointed out how surprised I was that Animal Crossing did that good. Like, I knew it was popular, but I never expected this.

Breath of the Wild probably has the most impressive legs out of any game in the past couple of years and that goes for worldwide sales too. You just don't see that kind of gta/mk selling power if your a single player only game

Well previous Animal Crossing is at 5.7M LTD, while previous main 3D Zelda sold a measly 350k LTD.

Breath of the Wild is the one which is more surprising in fact, it will sell something like 8-9 times what its predecessor did.

My Hero: One's Justice 2 for PS4 is out of the top 30 (so less than 1683) while the NSW version sold another 5095.
And kinda the opposite for Winning Post 2020 :P =)

For My Hero: One's Justice, Dengeki has the PS4 version at 1767. 31,492 in total for both PS4/Switch after week 2. The first game was at 56,945 after two week (also Dengeki). Still remains to see longer terms sales though, especially now that the Switch gets a big boost in hardware sales.

Direct Mini just aired. First party is pretty barren- I suspect coronavirus situation is wreaking havoc internally.

But some Japanese 3rd party announcements not in the NA presentation:

Pro Baseball Famista 2020
Shiren the Wanderer 5+: 2020
Powerful Pro Baseball 2020: 7/7

Ringfit just got even leggier, and also ate Just Dances lunch as a sidenote.

Arms might get some legs with the smash announcement, and the free trial for more than a week.

Bravely Default 2 going the full Octopath route, demo, then survey probably followed by enhanced demo that carries over into main game.

Capcom releasing a modern game on Switch
Atlus releasing a Persona team game on Switch
EA releasing a game on Switch

Something seems off...
