It's sort of funny to think that ACNH is likely the "last" huge Switch title Nintendo could have possibly released to expand its userbase. There's no going higher than this.
I mean, we may not get first week sales higher than this, but there's still 2D Mario, Tomadachi Life, Nintendogs, and Mario Kart 9 they could put out to expand the userbase.

More mature games like Bayonetta, Metroid Prime, and the like aren't going to sell anywhere close to Animal Crossing, but they will expand the Switch audience to a different crowd.

Yeesh. That's an amazing result.

I think we'll probably hear PR today or tomorrow that sales with digital surpassed 3M, this is a game where digital share will be enormous.

They will still sell consoles for sure, but nothing in the magnitude of AC. Most people who'd be into Bayonetta 3, MP4 already own the console. A brand new 2D Mario could pull something similar if they manage to make the brand fresh again.

Pokémon Sword/Shield had >32% digital sales at first week, Animal Crossing should have a bigger ratio. It definitely beat Pokémon Black/White for best opening with digital (>2.64m).
That'd be amazing!

Also, HW sales are impressive as well. So sad that the Pandemic situation affected production or we'd be getting more insane numbers.

Nintendo rarely gives sales for Japan specifically, only NoA and NoE do with data for US/NA and EU specifically. Next financials is most likely when we'll get the first retail + digital data for Japan.

Edit: oh wait, forgot TPC did give data for Japan specifically for Sword and Shield. There was even drama about whether data was just launch week or first week :P

Let's see if Nintendo follow suit this time. Probably not, since the PR for Pokémon was from TPC specifically.

Yeah, I agree we won't see it with the same scale, but your original post made it sound like you were saying Animal Crossing was the last tool in their box to expand their userbase. I 2D Mario and Mario Kart are two massive titles they still have at their disposal. I'm sure a new 2D Mario will happen, we just don't know what form. Mario Kart 9 may or may not happen before Switch 2.

They did for Pokemon and Smash. We got MC/Famitsu on the Wednesday after release and then Nintendo PR for total sell-through to supplement it on the Thursday after release (WW and JP/NA regions were reported for the opening weekend of Fri-Sat or Fri-Sun).

Let it be know, not only is this game gonna bring a lot of woman players(following new leaf's demographic breakdown by iwata), this game was directed by a woman that is the most powerfull inside nintendo, and that herself toke the decision to hire more females to work on the team after she noticed she was very commonly the only one in teams that consisted of men only. The significance of this game selling this well is so huge for me, it makes me so, so much happy.

The roots of what aya started doing in 2014 are bringing new beautiful fruits now.

Mario Kart is already on the platform though, so it wouldn't change much.

Animal Crossing was one of these Switch games that looked difficult to beat 3DS but it turns it will be an easy one.

Eh, I disagree there. A new Mario Kart would presumably have some new "hook" to it. There's also absolutely no doubt that it would be heavily advertised and would get bundles. People would eat those bundles up during the holidays. We'd probably see an opening month over 10 million again and it would easily be charting in the top ten for the rest of the Switch's life.

That's if it happens, of course.

I wonder — if Game Freak turns it all around and gen 9 turns out to be as critically lauded and beloved by fans as New Horizons will Pokemon as a series be able to catch back up to Animal Crossing?

Because as it stands now it looks like it's getting left in the dust.

Is 1.2m digital realistic? I was under the impression digital sales weren't as strong in Japan. I'm also unaware of the lockdown situation in Japan right now.

1.2m seems high, even with the 1.8m retail sales.

Or are we talking WW where it's almost certainly over 5m already.

Well, Pokémon has 4-5 releases in the same time AC has 1, and garners more than double the sales. Pokémon is still the biggest franchise

Extremely early thread but I'm glad. Animal Crossing and Switch continue to exceed expectations.

It's going to be a pretty boring rest of the year if things are not announced this week though.

A 33% digital ratio gives you 2.75m and we have seen higher digital ratios than that with some other Nintendo releases in the last year.

Wasnt Fire Emblem around 40% (and the highest we've seen so far?) due to its big discount through the voucher program? I dont think Animal Crossing would be able to match that since it doesnt have the same discount, and reacing 40% is much harder with such a big number (nearly 1.9 million). But i do think that Animal Crossing can reach 3 million within the first month (3 million being reached in either the 2nd, 3rd or 4th week).

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't every Nintendo 1st party game eligible for the voucher program, including Animal Crossing?

Also you ignore the current situation where people are more inclined to buy games digitally due to the virus and the nature of the game Animal Crossing is. I really don't see why AC should not reach Fire Emblem's 40% digital ratio. It's not a given but also not impossible.

Yeah it's realistic, most Nintendo games lately have had fairly high digital ratios around ~30% or even more in some cases. Animal Crossing's gameplay lends itself more to a digital game than most of them, since this is a game you play for a very long time and sometimes in shorts spurts daily, meaning you won't want to swap carts or sell it. It's also a voucher game, meaning it's cheaper to buy it digitally.

Also consider the current situation in the world. I'm not entirely sure how much it is affecting Japan but retail across much of the world is struggling greatly because people are trying to avoid going out when possible. So it makes even more sense than usual to go digital right now.

It's kind of a perfect storm for digital, I think the global digital share will be ~50% or more. Maybe a bit less than that for Japan but still quite high.

Ahh but the Animal Crossing milking has only just begun. Please get excited for Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival 2, Super Happy Home Designer, Animal Crossing Arena, Animal Crossing Warriors, Animal Crossing: Dancing All Afternoon, Animal Crossing Kart 9 (feat. Mario), and Paper Animal Crossing

Stop expecting things from GF.
I recognize it's an extremely far fetched scenario given the last few gens, but just hypothetically

Just the thought that the Nintendo switch has already sold half of what the 3DS has sold is absolutely stunning

The spike in the Switch YTD yearly chart is comical!

I wonder — if Game Freak turns it all around and gen 9 turns out to be as critically lauded and beloved by fans as New Horizons will Pokemon as a series be able to catch back up to Animal Crossing?

Because as it stands now it looks like it's getting left in the dust.
Game Freak would have to slow down releases or turn into Ubisoft. that's unlikely. in the short term, they could make Pokemon a more social experience, which they're just starting to do

Just think of all those evergreens those 400k new switch owners will buy.

Switch is good on the software side of things for months.

Pokémon games sales aren't in any meaningful way linked to the perceived quality of the games- they've been rock-solid WW for nearly two decades.

Just because AC's had an unprecedented launch, let's not get revisionist about Sword and Shield's performance- those games broke records when they came out.

We need a new version of the image where Iwata points at a map of japan and it says Nintendoland instead of Japan (i think there is also a blurb in it saying something like "we bought japan"). Replace Iwata with Tom Nook pointing at the map, only question is how to rename Japan in this image, maybe Nookland?
