Are we expecting Rise to end up with higher digital sales than World?

Probably a higher digital percentage, yes. For a number of reasons, like COVID, stock shortages, and the general uptake of digital sales in the last 4 years.

I'd say this would be the case both globally and in Japan.

Without question imo, but that's also a consequence of how badly packaged units are being undershipped.

MHW did around 900k digital total iirc and Rise should be near 700k for 1st week only.
Do you have a source for 900k digital for MHW in Japan? Last I saw from the Capcom leaks the MHW total for Japan was something like 3.4 million sold.

EDIT: Ah, right. The Master Edition. Yeah, ~900k looks like a good estimate for digital.

Yes, it should be almost there.

Yeah, that's why I was wondering. If the second week physical is similar to World(or lower) then that means quite a lot of digital copies in the last week as well.

Well we already know the percentage was higher at launch(30% vs 40%).
Do you have a source for 900k digital for MHW in Japan?

I assume that's the leaked MHW numbers from Capcom minus the physical sales from MC or Famitsu.

Q. I'd like to ask you how the number of units of "Monster Hunter World: Iceborn (hereinafter referred to as MHW:I)" Master Edition was counted. Is it counted together with "Monster Hunter: World (MH:W)"?

A. We only counted them as "MHW:I".

Well, if Master Edition isn't counted then Game Data Library shows 1.96 million for PS4 MHW and the Capcom leak numbers per article leaked below had 3.18 million for PS4 MHW. So that'd be ~1.22 million digital PS4 copies if I'm reading it correctly.

Monster Hunter World is printing money in 2020.

You are forgetting the two discounted editions.
Correct you are! Per GDL those amount to 120k, so that results in about 1.1 million digital PS4 copies sold, or right around 35% digital ratio.

EDIT: Using Chris' MC numbers below looks like ~1.04 million? That's a lot more precise, good. ~32.5% ratio

Shipment of Monster Hunter World in Japan before budget releases was 2,9m. That's the direct comparison to Rise for now.

Monster Hunter Portable 3 shipped 4,9m at full price and 400k with the low price reprint.

I'd expect sales and stock to be around June to September levels until further notice. At least it isn't like last year.

I really don't understand how you sell 62,295 consoles and not crack at least the top 30 with 1 piece of software. This is like Anakin bitching to the Jedi council.

Didnt the Vita, or the PSP do this years ago? I can't remember which, but sales-era probably remembers. I remember the handhelds hardware was selling weekly but the software was, god knows where.

NSW don't stop.

Believe in 40mil people, we are halfway there and NSW has the tools for great legs.

NSW could very well ship 8mil this FY.

By end of 2021 NSW > 3DS in japan

If the New Switch Color SP XL Mini Lite is real and hits all the right notes the original Switch did (albeit to a lesser extent obviously), then I'd say there's a good chance it becomes the biggest system ever in Japan.

If it's a minor upgrade, then maybe around 30 million.

So are we at the point where instead of paying third parties to keep their games off Xbox, Sony instead does so to make up for having to release them on Playstation?

Somewhere. I think.
Pokémon Crystal has been on top of the 3DS eshop charts for years now, and I wonder.. are those sales being added to the original GBC release? Does Nintendo update the old Pokemon versions sales data? Because it has to have sold like, at least half a million copies in Japan alone.

3DS eShop sales have slowed down to a trickle. Unless there's a sale, it's always the same games in the Top 10. And it doesn't take much for a game on sale to get in the Top 10.

And no, pretty certain VC sales aren't added to the total for the original release. They may be counted in the total for a given series (like when The Pokémon Company announces Pokémon games have sold xxx million units since Pokémon Red / Blue), but that's it.

Even if it did not exist, +30M would be in the cards, the switch ultra is yet to be seen how the Japanese market would react, but judging by previous trends it may not impact it as highly as some expect. So, probably also just +30M.

That's just a joke name for the Switch Pro/Plus/Whatever that is an amalgamation of multiple names, not a new rumor about the lite, right?

The effect of Switch Pro on sales will probably be that the second-hand market will be flooded with OG Switch since most of the people who will be interested, especially if it is more expensive, will be people who already have a Switch.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, since those low-priced OG Switches are reaching people who will also buy software.

The biggest thing about Rise's success is... its not really made with a "western focus" of any kind, its completely made for Japanese audience yet is selling on par with PS4's version of World if not faster.

I wonder if this level of success with the numbers Momotaro Dentetsu achieved would affect Japanese companies strategies in anyway going forward.

I have the feeling that lately it is very trendy to make games with a strong Japanese aesthetic. MH Rise, Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro, Sakuna, Pokemon Legends...

Yeah, I agree. A traditional/historical Japanese setting definitely isn't a negative for western audiences I feel. Rise's western numbers seem very good, regardless.

Hello there, glad to be back! Although I doubt anyone remembers me, but that's okay.

How did Iceborne do?
Total domestic sales as of the first week of October 2020:

[PS4] Monster Hunter: World # <ACT> (Capcom) {2018.01.26} (¥8.980) - 3.184.000
[WIN] Monster Hunter: World # <ACT> (Capcom) {2018.08.09} (¥8.980) - 236.000

[PS4] Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne # <ACT> (Capcom) {2019.09.06} (¥4.444) - 1.767.000
[WIN] Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne # <ACT> (Capcom) {2020.01.09} (¥4.444) - 137.000

Yes, MHW's DLC sold more units on PS4 than Dragon Quest XI, Final Fantasy VII Remake or Final Fantasy XV did.
