PS4 and Switch both look healthy, seems like PS4 is in stride release wise too. Nice to see both companies eating well. Wish MS could do well there too, but I guess that ship has sailed.

I think that number includes the FFXHD/FFX-2HD twin pack, otherwise it would be really strange if X-2 HD reached that number alone.

These was the most interesting part of the Shrine of Data of the old times, I miss it

How can a game multiply it's FW performance by more than a 100??

For Switch, I think Snipperclips probably has the biggest FW to LTD ratio when it comes to physical sales? I believe it started at like 3k and was recently at 60k+.

There are many factors.

New IPs aimed at kids typically have such a pattern because they sell through word-of-mouth (and kids are not day-one purchasers). Yo-kai Watch kept selling and selling and then the anime hit and it went from 5k weekly to 20-30k weekly. Pokémon gained traction through events at the beginning. Similarly for family or casual-friendly games such as Momotarou Dentetsu and Brain Training.

Budget games or games with budget versions sell because of their price, expanding the userbase and being an "easy purchase".

BTW, Labo has penetrated the top 3 on amazon (daily chart) with the variety kit (which also ranks at no. 8 with another sku). Has been on the rise for the past few days.

Robot kit is 54 and 72.

My understanding from following climate change closely was that batteries were improving greatly each year (batteries are the most expensive investment needed to switch over to mostly non-carbon energy in the United States so they're hugely important to climate change) so better battery technology could come in the near future for electronic devices as well was my guess.

Without better battery life... I'm not sure what a Switch revision could have, So if better battery life isn't able to happen...

Ok I really OT now, but as one that works with development of plug in vehicles I would like to give some insights on batteries.

Yes the technology is getting better but it is not getting earth shaking better. It is not like the company I work for just by changing the battery can double the range of our current products. Meaning that Nintendo might increase the battery life a little bit in a couple of years by changing the battery, if the cost is worth it is uncertain.

And that batteries is important for climate change is a just plain wrong. First batteries comes with a huge CO2 dept. Second we do not have the production volume of batteries to be able to back up the electrical grid. If you want to solve climate change you need to remove coal and the only power source that has solved that so far is Nuclear power. Looking at the current political climate that means that you will get climate change because no one is prepared to do what France and Sweden did in the 1970-mid 1980.

As my engineer friends explained to me, the battery technology is very stuck. What is improved is the chip that consume less.

Maybe a bit too OT, but is the best way to get rid of coal while not risking the dangers of conventional nuclear power to develop comercially viable fusion ?

Back on topic, since you work in a industry that uses such technology(irc Nvidias tegra line originated from usage in cars right ?), dont you think the best way to improve battery lifespan is to improve the efficency at which the battery power is used ?

Well I work with the mechanical side of powertrain so I have very little to do with the chips the software side is using. But yes efficiency is always important, question is if the customer is prepared to pay for it.

It might be better for Nintendo to use any efficiency gain to allow for a faster cpu/gpu instead of getting better battery life.

(the solution to the OT question was solved already in the eighties, you just build an inherent safe reactor that runs on the waste from our old reactors. USA had a test reactor doing exactly that until the coal industry and the environment movement got Bill Clinton to shut it down).

We did, however earthquakes and nuclear power don't mix so we had to switch to importing fuel to power the electrical grid.

We - french - are moving from Nuclear power. The goal is 2022 or something. Sweden is also moving from it slowly.

Nuclear isn't a great solution, you don't produce C02, but the waste are terrible for the environment and let's not even speak about the risk of failure. Norway is running everything on water power. When I mean everything, I mean something like 95% of the energy they produce comes from water. The investments is high, but it's 100% worth it, they proved - again - that they're one of the smartest country around. Switzerland is also making the switch to water power (50% by now and it's growing). Sweden is also at 50% currently. The only problem is investment cost, political courage and the fact that not every country in the world has enough water power (it's impossible in many countries in Africa for exemple).

France isn't going to replace nuclear power anytime soon.
Especially not by 2022.

80% of France's electricity is made in nuclear plant, our energy deficit is positive and Nuclear Plants are far safer and far less harmfull for the environnement than Wind Farms or Dams.

Whatever the green party harps on about nuclear power, the other solutions are way worse and far more expensive down the road.

Yeah, the issue with Nuclear is disposing of the waste but the amount of waste generated isn't very high. I live in Ontario Canada and 35% of our energy comes from nuclear, 28% comes from gas (natural gas being the biggest) and 23% comes from hydro.

Energy creations effect on the environment is multi tiered. The only obvious thing is the sooner we get off fossil fuels the better.

Off topic I know

Building nuclear reactors is very cost inefficient now compared to solar and wind, nuclear reactors never got less expensive to build. It would have been extremely good to build more nuclear reactors in the 80s, 90s, or 2000s, but now their costs are relatively higher.

Batteries are important because you need a way to store massive amounts of wind and solar energy. Obviously making batteries uses a lot of energy which currently burns CO2, but the goal would be to make the batteries using nuclear/solar/wind energy.

It's not coming from the green french party though, it's coming from Nicolas Hulot mouth, second most important man in our current government, state minister (second most important minister). The man that our current president protect the most and struggled hard to get into his government. It's just recently been voted to reduce the nuclear part of our energy from 75% to 50% in 2020 or so. It's a first test and the first step to get rid of nuclear energy totally (again, Macron and Nicolas Hulot words).

We're far off topic though. Glad to know you're french though !

I have no idea how the topic got there but

- The 50% target was for 2025 not 2020
- A few months ago they basically gave up on that target
- The law isn't recent, it was voted in 2015 under Hollande's presidency
- France has invested way too much in nuclear power for half a century to turn tail so quickly unless there's a drastical change in the political landscape, which isn't how we could define LR REM and the PS.

On another note, most of the argument pro nuclear are often fallacious, especially those regarding the cost of renewable ressources eg. biomass hydraulic, wind, solar
We just happen to live in the country that has invested the most in nuclear worldwide, the nuclear lobby in France is as powerful if not more than the gun lobby in America, but it's always easier to mock other than try to look at ourself sometimes.

That doesn't mean there aren't many impractical things regarding an energetic transition towards renewable sources, nor that there aren't costs involved, but it's by far one of the most toxic subject and harder to find a sensible truth or get well informed when living there.

In fact since Hulot was appointed he had to say France has given up on a lot of things related to environment, not a single week goes without a rumour of him just leaving the government altogether, even by Hulot himself who sometimes find it hard to go through all this. Though it's the usual dilemma of trying to change things from the inside vs the outside, but as of now he's more of a tool used to greenwash the current government that someone really effective on the environmental front.

Anecdotally Japan was the same, if not worse, until Fukushima, some journalists were fired for asking the wrong questions, sceptic experts didn't have any chance to show their opinions to a wide audience etc. all of that is well documented since the big turnaround that was 2011.

The visual polution of Wind Farms is insane and whenever I go to Britanny I'm always reminded of how ugly and wastefull it is (especially since the ratio between energy produced vs cost/space/upkeep/delocalisation of people is so bad).

Also no one wants to live close to them and their noise pollution.

Anyway Hulot was at his best as a TV documentary maker for Nature/Extreme sports/conditions with Ushuaia. I never found him really credible as a politician

At least let's put Godzilla in this discussion if we're talking about nuclear energy :p

He is a hardworker and serious, he has that for him. The problem is, he has to swallow a lot of shit.

Thanks for the informations. I was out of touch regarding this government action (I'm too disgusted by Macron to follow his agenda religiousely). I had hope in Hulot though... and you're totally right about the nuclear lobby in France, it's crazy. That and the diesel lobby.

It's already been 6 years. Which means that entire classes that were supposed to attend schools in Fukushima have entered and graduated from temporary schools and will be going on to middle school.

I'm in favor for some use of nuclear, but unfortunately it does not make sense here, which is a shame since we don't have natural fuel sources either so we have to dangerously transport gas to the country.

Anyway... Nintendo used about the optimal batteries they could for the Switch. It would be nicer if they lasted longer, I want batteries to last like several days, but that won't happen anytime soon. The 3-7 hours the Switch is capable of is good enough for most travel times and external batteries are also an option.

Went to Bic yesterday, good displays for Labo, the white smallest normal PS4 was sold out, all others were available. Splatoon bundle won't get more stock until the 17th, and there was a very happy 5 year old boy who just had his dad buy a Switch.

That may have been the case decades ago, today Wind Farms can be installed offshore, above or under the sea, in France most of the time they're installed in fields far from any house or road, you can see them in the distance pretty often in the south, noise has been reduced considerably and the visual pollution is honestly minimal, I even find that it blends rather nicely often but ymmv.

As for living near it I don't think anyone wants to live near a nuclear plant either like even 10km from it, nor do anyone wants a fast train line or a big car road or anything that can remotely do some noises or be of any inconvenience etc. but all these things exist and we have to deal with them as a society... somehow, solar panels well dozen of thousands of people already do, many even got money out of it between 2006-2015 thanks to a push for solar energy by Villepin's government but Sarkozy/Fillon quickly overruled that in 2009 leading to the solar industry in France nearly dying.

It's already been 6 years. Which means that entire classes that were supposed to attend schools in Fukushima have entered and graduated from temporary schools and will be going on to middle school.

Good thing or not, a few nuclear reactors were already restarted and this is the plan going forward for Abe's government, they overruled what the democratic party did post Fukushima.
Last year taking the skyliner from Narita I did notice that along the track for at least a dozen km there were solar panels, they blend in the environment rather well and didn't disturb anyone, I'm pretty sure it wasn't there a few years ago too.
What's crazy for me in Japan about the energy matter is how inefficient houses are there, if you don't put your aircon it's litterally super cold in your house in winter and super hot in summer, the loss of energy nationwide due to this must be insane, looking for answers I learned that basically houses are expected to last 30-50y until you demolish them to build a new one and that's not a big problem because when you buy a house the house itself is only ~30% of the cost while the land is 70%.
I imagine that there are anti sismic related matters that add up as well but I have a hard time believing that they aren't ways to improve matters on that front.

Funnily enough I happened to see a protest against Abe in Shinjuku yesterday, a few hundreds people maybe and they just walk on the road with cars near them. Surprisingly a lot of their slogan were in english, and the gist of it was "Abe stop lying", "We don't want war" and "No to nuclear power", not much of a surprise :p
