Those lines are really for Switch and Animal Crossing (and maybe RFA?) like for reals? Holy shit

Switch 2 won't come out in 2024. Fall 2023 would be the latest (reminder that this is 3 years after PS5/XSX launch) and I think late 2022 or Spring 2023 make more sense.

Also, even if you are joking, please don't claim to know things if you don't.

Yeah I apologize for that, thought it was a harmless joke since it shouldn't be taking serious. Won't happen again.

But that's a normal life cycle, you really think switch2 will come out at that time? There are a couple factors we have to look at here....

Are we even sure next gen is releasing this fall? How long are shortages going last 2020? Production isn't fully up yet intill...? Next model and how many more and as well as a price cut that hasn't happened or probably won't intill earliest 2021 holiday? Fall 2022 isn't even a full 6 years so earliest is spring 2023 but I can see 2024 fall

Agreed. Even the massively successful DS had a successor after six years and three months. No way in hell Nintendo is going to go seven plus years before releasing Switch 2.

I think Switch 2 is pretty much a lock for Q1 2023. That just worked out too well for them last time for them to not try that playbook again.

Other companies are releasing their multiplayer games every year, Call of Duty, Fifa and the likes...
- Call of Duty and FIFA are bigger than Mario Kart.
- Nintendo is also a console manufacturer, they need more variety in their catalogue than Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts do, with less manpower even.

7 years is not a normal life cycle for a Nintendo system.

The Famicon and the Super Famicon had about 7 years apart (the NES to SNES was less than 6 though). The Gameboy is also a little unique because it went from Gameboy (1989) to Gameboy Pocket (1996) to Gameboy Color (1998) to Gameboy Advance (2001) and there was very little improvement tech-wise until the Advance.

Other than that we have:

SNES (Fall 1991) --> N64 (June/September 1996) ~5 years
N64 --> Gamecube (September/ November 2001) ~5 years
Gamecube --> Wii (November 2006) ~5 years
Wii --> Wii U (November 2012) ~ 6 years
Wii U --> Switch (March 2017) ~4.5 years

GBA (March/June 2001) --> DS (November 2004) ~3.5 years
DS --> 3DS (March 2011) ~6.25 years
3DS --> Switch (March 2017) ~6 years

History puts the likelihood of release between 5 and 6 years.

For whatever it's worth Nintendo has repeated a number of times now at investor briefings that they want the Switch to have a longer than normal life cycle.

I still don't think that's gonna work out. with next gen coming, I think 2021 will show some slowdown (in the west, probably not as much in japan). still banking on Fall 2022/Winter 2023 for a switch successor

It's more likely to be 6+ than 5 most the successful Nintendo systems were 6 years and this combines two lines so it's actually fairly unique historically. We'll get a refresh most likely but they'll be no rush for a new gen since even Nintendo themselves know how hit and miss they they to be.

Software-wise it'll be very hard to do a 5 year gen even if they wanted to. They filled out the switches first few years with ports from an unsuccessful platform despite only working with one platform. They won't be able to do that again especially with coronavirus messing with dev pipelines so I'd say there's a minimal chance of 5 year lifespan, it's just not feasible even if they wanted to.

The last time a truly successful Nintendo system lasted less than 6 years was the GBA (which had, er, unique circumstances). Before that would have been the SNES. Hard to see the Switch not lasting as long as the 3DS.

2023 is the earliest I can see it.

Especially with this incoming recession I think next gen adoption is gonna be a lot slower than last time. Either way the effect it will have on Switch will be minimal even in 2021 I'd guess.

Yeah, besides I still firmly believe that Nintendo will follow Iwata's initial idea of an expanding brand ala iOS-devices and releasing subsequent revisions and upgrades of the Switch instead of a Switch 2 "restart". Maybe they'll even call it Switch 2 but it won't be like some people are expecting.

Why are people jumping on tbone. I took his comment as playful bragging that he's good at predicting things hence why he "knows" when switch 2 will launch.

Never did I get the feeling he was claiming inside knowledge. Which considering there's not even a switch pro announced yet Nintendo surely don't have a set date themselves.

This is exactly what will happen. The whole point of 'a long shelf life' is to keep sales at 18-20 million a year for as long as they can. They only have one platform so they will want to keep that going strong. Mid gen upgrades will be the way to go and I think they will call it Switch 2 but that's just a guess. Switch might last 20 years but not in traditional console cycles.

SNES (Fall 1991) --> N64 (June/September 1996) ~5 years
N64 --> Gamecube (September/ November 2001) ~5 years
Gamecube --> Wii (November 2006) ~5 years

Wii U --> Switch (March 2017) ~4.5 years

Never said 7 years is a normal life cycle, i was telling you what you said is a normal life cycle.

That said history doesn't mean much when it comes to Switch, it's not following any trend. It's the first of its kind and Nintendo also wants a longer life cycle for it

You said Fall 2024 which is where I got the 7 years from. I guess I misinterpreted what you were saying about normal life cycles.

0 as in Nada? As in 0%? As in Impossible? Who do you know that works for Nintendo and how did you acquire this information?

On a more serious note, this is the first time a Mario kart game is a port and we haven't got one this generation. So there is no guarantee on if it's coming or not. No pattern, no history unless your sticking to the 1 per generation (per console)?
I still believe there can be a Mario kart 9 on switch (then a port of a deluxe version) especially if it's having a much longer life than a normal console
Let's face it, the only reason MK8 got ported is because Wii U was a a failure.

At this rate they should just knock out some DLC for MK8D.

Please don't apologise. It was clearly a joke - as soon as I read your post I could tell it was a joke. People here need to stop obsessing over every little thing and especially stop obsessing over so-called insiders. Lighten up, please.

21./17. [NSW] Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 (Sega) {2019.11.01} - 3,744 / 309,430

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will end up only existing in video game form. Too bad, I would have liked to see how high the game would have gone. Maybe they can release a Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020: 2021 Edition.

Worst possible time to have lines as well...
timing could not be better/worse

South Korea is definitively safe. In the case somebody test positive it will be detected and tracked very soon, and all persons that stayed there also tracked and put into quarantine.
The same can't be said about Japan, if somebody gets infected there, he/she won't be tested until after 4 days with high fever and symptoms, giving the virus plenty of time to keep spreading.
At least Japanese people in general are more responsable and also wear masks.

FY
2016: 2.92mil (Launch)
2017: 15.05mil (Shortages/etc)
2018: 16.95mil
2019: *20mil+ (Switch Lite)
Total: 55mil (3years and 1quarter)

-Shortages and showing huge demand over the hardware as of now.
-another model or 2? (None will come out in 2020)
-Still haven't seen a price cut and as of now it doesn't even need it so there is still room to breathe for a longer lifespan

I think with all this the switch will continue on longer than usual. It's not looking like a 5/6year console no more imo. More of a 7/8year one

Edit: here is an example of what is a possibility to happen.

F
2020: 14-15mil (shortages again)
2021: 20mil+ (peak year [Price cut holiday]
2022: 15mil (new model)
2023: 10mil
2024: 5-6mil (switch 2 launch)

Lifetime: 120mil-125mil
tbh there's no way it only sells 14-15 million this year, unless things truly take most of the year to resolve stock wise. without the virus, this was looking to be the peak year, it should still be like 17-18 imo

Producer Keisuke Kikuchi talks Fatal Frame again, comments on the possibility of Switch remasters

With the lack of Fatal Frame games in recent years, fans have been very much anticipating a new entry. We asked series producer Keisuke Kikuchi about the possibility of the franchise appearing on Switch a few months ago, and while he seemed potentially interested, no promises were made. We saw...

With Switch being their only platform, they will never want to allow 4 years of Switch selling sub 15 million numbers. They will want to keep it as high as possible for as long as possible and that's why they will need new hardware models.

Yeah what Nintendo counts as a successor to the Switch may count as 'hardware with a new concept' as opposed to a Switch with higher specs. People definitely get hung up on theoretical names too much.

Do you know who owns the Fatal Frame IP. I thought it was co owned with Nintendo and Tecmo but I'm not sure.

Switch (new and used) prices skyrocked this week, sales will depend entirelly on what Nintendo shipped.

Animal Crossing had a big restock at Saturday and another one at Tuesday.

It's weird that Fatal Frame is where Nintendo would draw the line considering they re-published TMS and were happy to do the same with The Wonderful 101. Fatal Frame 5 was also relatively successful by the series' standard.

FFVII was a real turning point for PlayStation in Japan. It was going head to head with Saturn until then.
