Too likable. Was probably more like, "Nintendo's mobile games have suffered enough delays already."

Abe also reportedly overheard saying:

"To hell with Playstation. Shut them down. A stationary console is entirely unsuitable for Japanese tastes. The sheer majesty of Breath of the Wild 2 will cause this beastly virus to tremble in fear. Foul virus! You may take my Olympics, but you'll never take my Zeeeeldaaaaa!".

Oh another interesting note, here are the first 3 quarters of every year combined... (2019 had both models released)

2017: 1809k
2018: 1763k
2019: 2519k
2020: 1703k (1 quarter)

If switch sold 61k last week it would have already passed 2018 first 3 quarters. If 107k then both 2017/2018.

817k is needed to beat 2019. It has a good shot of doing it in the next 2 months if supply is met imo

Remember when people (myself included) were highly skeptical of 2020 being the peak? Maybe 5 million this year is possible after all.

that's the difference between consoles and devices like phones. there aren't many apps that needs new hardware. whereas, games need to advance to justify new hardware
Yeah, thats true. I just mean that when the choice is available, getting the same game on older hardware or buying brand new hardware to play the same game, but with better graphics and/or performance, a lot of people go with the option of better performance. So if Nintendo goes the route of Switch 1 and 2 playing basically all the same game, its possible that Switch 2 will still be able to see a lot of hardware. Now i'm only talking about about cross gen game, just to point that out. Its a different senario when one handheld and one console SKU were available at the same time, in many cases.

It depends on the amount of stock available, and it should be very short-lived compared to the DS Lite phenomeon...but yes, there are undeniable similarities between the two. And honestly, I never thought I would've seen something similar ever again.

For those unaware, the DS Lite was capable of sending DS sales to the stratosphere, with 8 million units sold in 2006 and 7 million units sold in 2007, and constant sell-outs for two years.
Incredible

Sakurai now switching to remote work. Not sure if that's the whole team or just him.

Oh, and Famitsu report for March (finally).

These fire sales at eShop lately really mess up the charts.

Yup, but at least it does help us gauge the performance of some titles better, like Xenoblade last week or Pokémon Mystery Dungeon this week. That they were able to hold their own despite going against 90% off titles shows their digital sales were quite strong (well, Pokémon at least, we'll see how things go for XC moving forward).

Somewhere. I think.
No Switch shipments (AC bundle and Lite specifically) this week outside of pre-orders/lotteries.

And Nintendo Tokyo closed from April 8th onwards because the shopping centre it's located in is closing.

Huh, just noticed I totally missed the February report from Famitsu, didn't see it posted there.

stock market is even roughly where it was at in 2017 in most markets.

I wonder if animal crossing has exceeded 3.5m with digital

With last week numbers included? There are very good chances it did.

Anywayb are there hints coming from retailers about how big the shipments should be for the lotteries? As Chris said, this week many stores have lotteries, but I don't think we have an idea yet of their sizes.

And now, Pokémon Center stores in regions impacted by the state of emergency closed until further notice.

To think that just last month Abe and co. were still trying to convince everyone the Olympics would be able to proceed as planned.

Surely there's a way publishers can temporarily rate their own games rather than delay for months simply because it doesn't have an official rating??

IIRC only mobile games can be put on the stores without a CERO rating.

Yeah, but in an extreme scenario like this you'd think they could figure out a temporary compromise. Delaying games simply because CERO themselves haven't rated them seems crazy, especially when we're trying to convince people to stay home.

Toto already talked about this unnecessary meetings in person that happen in the Japanese industry.
I believe that CERO's work could be done perfectly at home, but well.

It's true, it's how we do it here. For instance even though Governor Koike asked us to stay home, I needed to go to my gym to sign a document cancelling my membership or continue to get charged during the "lock down", they wouldn't let me do it over the phone, I asked.

If you think that's crazy, AC likely had the biggest opening week in the history of Japan with digital included.

Next months' releases are fine on this front since they are already rated by CERO (stuff releasing in July like the Switch port of Catherine and the next Jikkyou is, indeed, rated). My main hope is that there's not much workload that gets accumulated once offices reopen next month.

I wonder if publishers and developers themselves may ask for a temporary solution or they'll just oblige for the next month.
Also, sincere question: do CERO offices usually close during Holidays such as Golden Week? If that's the case, then the disruption may not be as sever since the closure period include days when there wasn't going to be activity anyway.

No way CERO will stay closed for long if publishers have to release games this year. They will have to switch to remote work regardless of their preferences before long. The economic pressure will be too strong.

If the State of Emergency ends on May 7th, we may see no changes unless publishers really need games to be rated from now until the end of April when GW Holidays start. Hopefully (I've been saying this word way too many times the past few days, I'm sick of it) the SoE ends indeed at the beginning of May so normal operations can resume.

So given this is the last week we'll get public Dengeki numbers, might as well share some highlights.

01./01. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo) {2020.03.20} - 719,318 / 2,551,177
Animal Crossing cruises to 2.5M!

06./08. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} - 11,311 / 706,945

27./27. [NSW] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age S - Definitive Edition (Square Enix) {2019.09.27} - 1,889 / 519,295
25./24. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! (Bandai Namco Games) {2018.07.19} - 2,059 / 472,509

30./21. [NSW] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva MegaMix (Sega) {2020.02.13} - 1,550 / 84,514
31./35. [NSW] Fit Boxing (Imagineer) {2018.12.20} - 1,529 / 73,928

I may try to do some older Dengeki data if the public numbers are ending this week. Hopefully folks found it useful while it lasted!
I just wanted to say thanks for all the work you've done regarding the Dengeki charts! :) Its too bad that we wont get any more numbers from Dengeki. Their numbers for top 50, and their total software sales for each platform, gave a much better picture of the overall market compared to what Media Create and Famitsu has provided (at least on a weekly basis, i know that the Media Create White Pages includes a lot of data for example).

Remember when people (myself included) were highly skeptical of 2020 being the peak? Maybe 5 million this year is possible after all.

5mil is guaranteed if Nintendo can make enough lol

I can see it happening maybe 5.5mil but we need to wait and see how the next weeks play out

Ok this is kinda insane. Yeah a 2012 3DS comparation would be interesting to do. (3DS was at 1.3 million at this point of the year, it sold 5.6 million in total)

Didn't Nintendo basically say this already in a tweet when they said that only reservations would be fulfilled?
