Shipments:

As of January 28, 2018:
around 2 million units on PS4 (5 million units worldwide, 60% of that outside Japan, source: Capcom, via Mochizuki)

As of August 20, 2018:
around 2.9 million units on PS4 and PC, including Best Price SKU (over 10 million units worldwide, 29% of that in Japan, source: Capcom, via Famitsu)

As of early October 2020:
3.184.000 on PS4 + 236.000 on PC, total 3.420.000 (source: Capcom data leaks)

Let's take "around 2 million units" as 2.000.000 and "around 2.9 million units" as 2.900.000 and see what happens.

First week physical shipments for World are estimated to be 1.245.169 / 0,9207 = 1.352.416 units.
If World shipped 2.000.000 units in 3 days, then digital sales were 2.000.000 - 1.352.416 = 647.584 units, a 34% digital share for sell-through.

Initial shipments for the first Best Price SKU are estimated to be 4.889 / 0,157 = 31.140 units.
Since Capcom launched this SKU, it's safe to assume that they didn't ship any additional copies of the base SKU afterwards, which means that its LTD physical sell-through as of December 29, 2019 was already shipped by August 20, 2018.
Thus total physical shipments as of August 20, 2018 are estimated to be 31.140 + 2.031.129 = 2.062.269 units.
If World shipped 2.900.000 units by that point, then digital sales on PS4 and PC were 2.900.000 - 2.062.269 = 837.731 units.
In this scenario, from January 28 to August 20, physical sales for World increased ~815k while digital increased ~190k, including the PC launch.

Seems possible so far. But here comes the problem: afterwards and as of December 2019, Capcom shipped at least 443.388 + (69.635 - 31.140) + 42.362 = 524.245 physical copies to retailers. Iceborne Master Edition continued selling in 2020 (74k according to Famitsu), so you would expect total shipments as of early October 2020 to be a decent amount over 2.900.000 + 524.245 = 3.424.245 units, but they're actually reported lower at 3.420.000 units. Does this confirm that Capcom does not include the Master Edition sales into World figures? If so, then World actually sold a lot on the PSN when its price dropped and its total including the Master Edition and PC version would be around 3,9 million units. Or maybe the leaks are incorrect, or I might have made a mistake while writing this, if so then please feel free to correct me lol.
Master Edition isn't included.

I think I actually found something interesting. I was looking at some old Capcom PR and found this from an old Q&A I don't think was ever discussed in these threads, I only found an unnoticed mention by one user in a platinum page update thread: https://www.resetera.com/threads/ca...f30th-1m-rankings.151646/page-4#post-26221144

For 2nd quarter, Capcom said Master Edition is actually not double counted, but only put in Iceborne.
The Japanese with google translate at least is stronger with an "only".

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 --> Xenoblade Chronicles DE could be a good comparison point for Nier Automata --> Nier Replicant

Idolmaster is by ILCA who are also doing the Diamond & Pearl remakes. Also wasn't Namcot Collection/Namco Museum Archives by M2? Also Neko-Tomo/Cats Together (at least the OG release) was by Groove Box Japan.

Supply for Rise looks to have been normalised at its 3rd week, much sooner than 4 that happened at 5th. Drop at retail will give a good idea where it will end, if it follows previous games and is around 50% again it will say goodbye to 5m lifetime sales from now.

32% drop on Comg. Hopefully the situation will be around the same nation wide.

Winning Post is the next IP that was its audience moved to PlayStation consoles from the moment Sony entered the market that will cross lines with Switch. It's just unknown if it will happen from next entry or will need one more year. For Atelier everything shows the change of leading system will happen at next one.

For me it looks like there are new fans interested in getting the new Atelier Collection because they only played Ryza on Switch, not because Atelier fans on PlayStation dont want to play on PS4 anymore and are going to just buy games for the Switch or something like that

I have to point out that, supply of Monster hunter Rise hard copy is still very tight in big department store like Bic Camera and Yodobashi in Tokyo this weekend.

However, when you are looking at smaller shops like Geo(ゲオ),there are always physical version in stock.

Such things showed that the switch users and new players are more used to going to large shopping mall rather than dedicated gaming shops.

That is why conversion rates are higher for switch than ps4.
Even after launching week, the conversion rate is becoming higher and higher.
Because Comg!is a small gaming shop chain with only 5 stores located in Niigata Prefecture.

Falcom ditching PC right before the Steam-fueled PC gaming renaissance took off and then ditching handhelds right before the Switch completely took over Japan has not been a good look for them!

Fortunately for Kondo his buddies at NIS can clean up after his messes.
Just out of curiousity, hasnt Falcom been relatively consistent with their PC releases over the last 15 years or so? I know that some of the english localizations have been released quite a long time after the japanese release for sure, indeed, but hasnt some of their games in general been on Steam for a while now, while other and earlier releases were also released in Japan (not on Steam though)? Or did they stop/delay releasing PC games for a while?

Or do you mean that Falcom dropped PC as being the publisher themself? If so, i can see that :) I wonder why they dropped being the publisher themself. They did seem to be more active on self publishing on PC before if i'm not mistaken.

And yeah, i think its nice that they have started releasing more games on the Switch even if they arent the publishers, and NIS helped them there, indeed :)

EDIT: I fixed a typo.

PC used to be their main platform. Then they switched to PSP lead.

PC used to be their main platform. Then they switched to PSP lead.
Ah ok, i see. Thanks :) Does that mean that they basically replaced the PC releases with PSP games instead? Or did they still release some PC games as well, but less games than before? If so, i didnt think of that senario, my mistake, sorry :) I was reading it as that they ditched making PC games all together for a while, kinda like they did with handhelds (after they stopped releasing Vita games, it took a bit of time before they started releasing on the Switch instead, if i'm not mistaken), and i thought that they still released some PC games during the last 15 years or so, so i wanted to ask about it :)

EDIT: A late edit, but i just wanted to fix a typo :)

But they also released the Arland Trilogy, the Dusk Trilogy and Lulua on Switch.

Is more of a case that Gust and Koei Tecmo build-up the audience on the system.

They also released Lydie and Suelle on Switch, the last game in this(Mysterious) Trilogy. The port was pretty crap though, it looks like they basically redid it for this release.

Yeah, I actually bought that digitally haha.

It was clearly rushed on Switch with pretty poor framerate, resolution and assets, the only positive aspect is that at least it was better than the Vita version. I was pretty surprised at how much Gust improved their Switch work with Lulua a year after. Hopefully the Mysterious trilogy will also be more optimized.

What's the expectation for the drop for MHR for next thread's sales? I think 25%-30% is a good range.

Falcom is one of the oldest and most storied Japanese CRPG developers in history. They were one of the pioneers of the genre and responsible for several beloved CRPGs in Japan in the years before the Famicom and other consoles started to take hold. Dragon Slayer more or less created the Action RPG as we know it, being a direct influence on The Legend of Zelda, among others, shortly thereafter.

While the RPG audience in Japan migrated to consoles over time, Falcom remained committed to PC as they were (and still are) an extremely small studio that's known for just kinda doing their own thing. Dragon Slayer, Xanadu, Ys, and The Legend of Heroes (and its spinoff Kiseki series) were all franchises that lived on PC primarily.

Then in 2007 the founder of Falcom retired and some dude named Toshihiro Kondo was promoted to take over the company. At the same time all of those PC franchises I mentioned suddenly became PSP franchises. Not that ports of their games (including to PSP) weren't happening already, but Ys Seven I'm pretty sure was the first of these games to lead on PSP, and that game never even got a PC release in Japan. Zero no Kiseki in 2010 was also PSP exclusive and only got a PC port in Japan years after the fact. And I don't necessarily think it was a bad decision, as Falcom never really got a foothold in the western market where the PC JRPG market literally didn't exist and the PSP in Japan was at escape velocity due to Monster Hunter. I believe Zero and Ao ended up being their most successful games at the time after all (correct me if I'm wrong).

Oh by the way, just in a totally unrelated aside that has nothing to do with this stuff whatsoever, also in 2010 there was this Japanese PC RPG made by a small indie studio no one had ever heard of, which received a localization by a company that had no published games and was literally two people, and was released in the west on Steam to a market that didn't actually exist. That game was Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, and it went on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies, established that there was indeed a potential market for these types of games on Steam, and may well have kickstarted the PC JRPG renaissance that continues to this day. This has nothing to do with Falcom though so I'm not sure why I brought it up!

Winning Post is the next IP that was its audience moved to PlayStation consoles from the moment Sony entered the market that will cross lines with Switch. It's just unknown if it will happen from next entry or will need one more year. For Atelier everything shows the change of leading system will happen at next one.

It's an iterative series which from WP9 in 2019 has been on PS4/Switch/PC with some changes year to year but yes I expect a crossover sooner or later especially since this year there's a demo on Switch - that said considering its iterativeness I feel that there isn't any real reason to switch platforms unless there's cross-save (they had it for my version of PS3/Vita, but not sure if they do it for PS4/Switch/PC). Either way it'd involve double dipping.

Falcom doesn't release anything on PC (or Switch) these days. Their last Windows PC release was Zwei II in 2008 and their last Nintendo release was Ys V Expert on SFC in 1996 (although Koei published it for them).

They license their games out but don't actually develop, produce or publish games themselves on anything but PS4 right now.

That seems like a decent hold for Outriders PS4 I think? And by extension we should assume the PS5 version won't be in the top 30 right?

I like that Falcom has become so wedded to Playstation that people have just straight up forgot that for most of their history they were literally the most storied and acclaimed Japanese PC developer ever

Having a more than 33% attach rate must be a great feeling for the suits and developers.

Numbers like that makes that fat check that Sony is going to bring to Horii go down easier.

At COMG, Rise orders are 185, down 88 from 273 (so -32%). This is only COMG, so not a good indicator for nationwide trends, but this would be a good scenario I think if it did translate to the situation nationwide.

Interestingly, while the first week COMG vs actual sales proportions were not at all in line with the usual 1:1000 for Switch games, second week was (273 vs 277k). Here's hoping third week is indeed around 1:1000 as well.
