I wonder if an eventual success of Ys VIII on the Switch may be able to nab us some more Falcom ports. I'd love to play Trails in the Sky.

Japan
Question for Japan era.
Is the PS4 out of stock in several places?

Just checked Amazon.co.jp, and it looks like they are out, and the ones they got (500gb, 3rd party) seem way overpriced. Where a slim is supposed to be around Y29k, it's at Y39k.

Weirdly enough, Amazon US have also been oos for several days.

Yes it does appear to be out of stock in many online shops (the Switch as well). I have seen them at retail in my small (80k people) town. And a few other Japan posters have anecdotally seen them at retail. We do not have a clear picture of the supply situation right now. We need more data points. I have changed my previous post to reflect this.

I feel that supply constraints alone are not the only reason PS4 and Switch sales are down. But it may be more of a contributing factor than I had previously believed. I will in the future avoid speculation about the whole of Japan and go back to reflecting only on my town. Sorry if anyone feels misled.

The trajectory has been sliding downwards for a while, basically following MH's weekly downward trend. Last (few) week(s) saw a decent slate of releases that bumped numbers up against the trend, so when the trend returned but deferred by one week the slide looks sharper than it was but in reality it would have been a steady decline if not for the stream of releases. Which, of course, is a fairly logical expectation and deduction.

When the releases end, it fell down to where it had been trending and it also entered a bad season for sales where everything went down, this also likely exasperated the disparity and weekly drop. I don't really think you need supply issues to rationalize this. It's also really bizarre to be arguing shortages for a mature console for, what, 11 weeks? We going to go the whole year arguing over shortages?

The rest of the software numbers have been fairly poor all year, reflecting the general drop that we see in hardware but that was masked by World.

Conversely, Switch has effectively, give or take a few thousand, been selling par for the entire Quarter, so it continuing to sell par is... well, par.

man ps4 is doing really well. first two million seller on a traditional console in over a decade and sales are way up year over year. really pushing traditional japanese franchises and games too. sega should be happy with valkyria chronicles 4. and level-5's probably excited that a niche game like ni no kuni ii is doing almost as well as an established franchise like far cry.

nintendo switch though - down from last year at this time and last week as well. i thought kirby was supposed to be a big system seller. really hard to see the future for this thing when it relies on just the same four titles to keep it going and no major releases until the end of the year with smash bros.
Lol. That is funny. Good one!

Now THAT's the Anihawk that I remember and the one that fooled me when I first started following Media Create threads.

Well, yeah, but there's only 6m units in the wild. There's a ton of room for growth. It shouldn't come down to weekly releases to move units. It should be hitting its stride. But it's on life support.

I'm late to reply to this.

You're looking at that wrong, don't look at how many units have sold total, look at the yearly hardware sales. PS4 is expected to decline YoY, that means there's no room for growth, for it to do better YoY after a decline would be rejuvenation which examples are Kinect for Xbox 360 and Pokémon for Gameboy. The PS4 has been on the market for four years already, its yearly HW sales have shown that the audience it appeals to are niche, where it looks like the majority of the demographic consists of Males aged in their mid teens to late 30s going by what software sells well on the system.

Of course there are exceptions such as Minecraft but that manages to sell well on any platform it is on. (Look at the Vita)

And with regards to MHW and DQXI, those were the only games to pull people from the mainstream to go and buy a PS4, the problem though as has been seen by the sales data for the weeks following is that MHW and DQXI is literally the equivalent of FIFA and COD for Europe, the game appeals to mainstream audiences but, those audiences are not game enthusiasts, hence, they are only buying a PS4 for those games and not much else, so the problem is that PS4 doesn't have much other games that are supposed to appeal to that mainstream audience in Japan.

The PS4 will need a price cut to pick up sales but the problem is still the lack of software that appeals to a mainstream/broad audience. I thought that Fortnite which finally released on PS4 in Japan in March this year would have done something, but the hardware sales suggest it had very little effect. Why I bring up Fortnite is that Battle Royale games are popular in Japan, but now Fortnite is available on iOS and it is doing really well in Japan, so it becomes obvious that the PS4 won't be able to pull people from the broad audience to buy a PS4 for Fortnite because it is available on mobile phones, and even before that there was a battle royale game on mobile called Knives Out by Netease, you'll find even that game is doing well on mobile, that just reinforces the point that battle royale games arrived too late to the PS4 in Japan because those games are already available on mobile.

I don't think PS4 would have sold amazingly if it was fully stocked either. This was a week without any new releases after all.

Like others have said, slow week this week. Xenoverse 2 still hanging on at the end of the chart. PS4 dropped, but it looks like shortages from the above post. Then again, there was nothing new that charted, so it figures PS4 would have dropped anyway, but, maybe, not as much. Kirby is close to 400k already (physical).

It will almost certainly be down YoY, but the question is by how much. Some notable releases like KH3 and the like will help hardware sales, but in general the sort of consumer that can be brought to PS4 has been brought already. Unless VR or some different-er platform suddenly went even cheaper, I can't see how else it would grow the base.

I'm still trying to figure out how Fami is actually arriving at these claims now, given the week to week... claims that seem completely diametrically opposed over all of like 10k sales.

"Sales have marginally improved" -> sales went up 5k
"Shortages" -> sales drop 10k.

This is back to back, its almost as if they inform their evaluation based on the number sold rather than actual supply, so a post priori analysis rather than an apriori analysis. Because otherwise, this flow of events is straight up bizarre. Supply improved weekly by 5k (after we had weeks of stable ~20ks sales?) and then went 10k negative the week after? What, did shipment suddenly change for one week?

Ultimately we don't know how they arrive at this analysis as far as I'm aware, but let's look at the comments in question:

PS4の出荷台数は僅かに供給回復の兆しが見られる。

This comment is from last week, and claims that a "signs can be seen of a slight recovery in hardware shipments". It's a week with a fair number of new PS4 software, and is also a pretty qualified statement. This I would say does sound more speculative.

依然として品薄の解消しないPS4は[...]1.3万台の販売台数に留まった。
This is this week's comment, which presents the situation with far less qualification, saying that PS4 essentially "fails to realise a solution to its stock issues".

Of the two, the latter sounds more definitive, but these two weeks are not the first times this year Famitsu has referenced a PS4 shortage either, so if it is all after-the-fact analysis, then they have been riding it for a while now.

I want to point out that Attack on Titan 2 on PS4 and Vita STILL haven't reached 80% of their shipment, and I doubt any more copies have been sent to stores. We've seen folks mention both versions are heavily discounted, while the Switch version is still lacking stock (it's been at 80%-100% since week 2). Amazon JP said more stock would arrive on the 9th (Monday), so we should see a nice increase next week.

Right, as noted in the Discord, I don't really want to leverage my Japanese vs. yours, but the way this has been going for like... 11 weeks? Makes me curious how they're actually informing these sometimes speculative-sounding reports. But even the more definitive wording this week didn't seem particularly clear cut in whether they're just speculating on supply or actually tracking it.

11 weeks of shortages with sales this low is... honestly kind of pathetic for a mature system. But then with these software sales besides MHW... the market's kinda comatose regardless and is probably why its not being solved, probably not worth it to really expedite supply.

So if there really is a great nation wide shortage (I have seen certain models sold out at Bic, but I can also walk down the street to the nearby bookstore and buy one with no trouble right now) why? It would not be hard for Sony to ship 70k a month which would likely alleviate the shortage all together. They have had close to a quarter to sort this out.

Sony saw Nintendo's artificial scarcity strategy and decided to copy it, next they'll stop releasing games on PS4 to have a hungry audience, guaranteeing high software sales.

Software. Its not moving, hardware not selling software is going to be low on your radar. Strike MHW, what's sold this year? DW9 is the only (?) 200k title this year.

And shortages/not are likely not going to change the actual week to week numbers by much. We were at 20-something for over a month, that was probably a time of steady-state. So 5k up or 5k down around that average is... statistical noise.

Shortages componants for ps4 too?

Nah. The DRAM/NAND shortages that hit phones/Switch were an industry wide issue because of how ubiquitous they were for a variety of platforms.

This is a pure guess but maybe the retailer are not in a hurry to order?
Maybe they got other things that takes up space and don't think demand for PS4 is enough for higher volume of order.
It's definitely weird if stock issue is caused by Sony's logistic.
The system is in mature stage already and demand is more or less not that far from last year so far except near MHW launch.
Furthermore there is no indication PS4 is facing component shortage issue either.

Sony is really going to get clobbered in Japan from here on out. It will be tough to watch.

I think in NA Sony will have an advantage until September.

Right...but do you know MHW's budget compared to a typical MH entry?
MHW's overall budget is likely more expensive than any of their recent entries in the last few years, but that's only speculation based on them creating entirely new assets in HD. Considering the worldwide success and its dip in cosmetic microtransactions, I don't doubt their budget, however big, had broken even a while ago.
