I still humbly disagree. As of last month, Switch is technically at it's 4th anniversary. You're always supposed to count a platform within a year after it's release, not during it's release. And what you just said in bold proves my point.

Would you count an anniversary of any sort (like a wedding/marriage anniversary), etc. during your first year, or a year after you've gotten married? It's the same thing.

What's March 2017 - March 2018 supposed to be then, the 0th year?

There's no argument to have here, by all metrics and official accounts Switch is in its 5th year while it has yet to celebrate its 5th year anniversary release.

Sony didn't even try with Vita.

Will never understand people who say Sony didn't try with Vita. Out of the gate they secured some great support but the product was stillborn. They fucked up massively but that's not the same as "not trying". Makes complete sense that they cut their losses and focused on the PS4.

Ofc Switch is in its 5th year, weird discussion lol. Like some of you never celebrated any kind of birthday or anniversary.

Dont what this is a response to but yeah Sonys def. tried with the Vita and it actually had a great launch period lineup with alot of heavy hitter from first parties including Uncharted, Killzone, LBP etc.

They tried it just didnt work out, the market wasnt big enough for multiple mainstream handhelds. It also didnt help that Nintendo was forced into a desperation mode with the 3DS so they pretty much did everything to secure that it would be a success. PriceDrop+3DLand+MK7+MH3/4Announcements all in couple weeks.

There wasnt really much you could do at this point, it would have taken crazy amount of investments to compete on that mainstream level...like selling the system at a loss and have their big PS4 games release on Vita instead of PS4. Just didnt make much sense.

Was in response to a post in this thread, which I've included in my post now. My bad. The initial support was really good so it's a shame that the writing was on the wall early on. Losing Monster Hunter to Nintendo definitely didn't help, and the fact that they tried to push so many other hunting action games on the system to compensate for that speaks volumes.

So yeah, definitely agree that it didn't make sense to support it and potentially take resources away from the PS4, which had far better prospects. It is what it is, but I think the "Sony didn't try" rhetoric is low-key revisionist history. I've seen some people point to Nintendo's Wii U support, but in that instance they had no choice. All the HD games they had in development for the system had to go somewhere, and that certainly wasn't going to be the 3DS lol

It was interesting that the Vita had a ton of decent hunting games- Freedom Wars in particular on Sony's part, which had a load of great ideas including having to physically remove enemy parts, and the thorn (grappling hook) long before Monster Hunter. Toukiden, Soul Sacrifice and God Eater were all great entries in the genre too, and solid efforts to build the community on Vita. None of them were the phenomenon that monster hunter was, but it doesn't mean there wasn't a concerted effort to pursue the genre that had come to define portable multiplayer in Japan, in addition to the western developers throwing shooters onto it (Killzone Mercenary remains a really solid FPS campaign). Meanwhile, the 3DS got FF Explorers trying to ride the same wave and that was terrible.

Nah, I just think that counting a platform on the same year that it was released on as the anniversary year instead of a year after is silly.
you're just mixing two different things
switch is 4 years old.
it is in the 5th year of its lifespan.

when we say "for the first year of x's life" we mean from the time x was born until its first birthday.

Yeah and Nintendo knew that everything they did on WiiU was gonna be able to be re-used and help them with their next system and portable anyway. So while a bomb it still was the logic next step as you say in terms of HD gaming.

The Vita itself didnt have any kind of massive future and at some point they made the call. Instead of keeping it around rather use the resources to make the PS4 as successful as it could be, including greenlighting the PSVR development.

*Sigh* Let's just move on. This thread has been detailed about this long enough.
Here's a simpler example. Nintendo announced Mario's 35th anniversary last year. Going by your logic, Mario's 35th anniversary should be this year, not last. So you might as well be telling all the game companies that are celebrating anniversaries this year that they're wrong.

Actually, Nintendo are technically right. Super Mario Bros. 1 was released in 1985, but they didn't count the same year that game was released on.

I reported for bad faith discussion and put the user on ignore. Sorry I participated in derailing the thread.

Sure, punish me for having a different opinion on anniversary years. You basically pointed it out yourself.

OMG, it's been a long time since we had a random semantics discussion in here.

And once again, you proved me right. What year are we in? 2021. The Switch is on it's 4th anniversary now.

Oh wow, just admit you were wrong, nothing bad will happen. This post perfectly explains it:

you're just mixing two different things
switch is 4 years old.
it is in the 5th year of its lifespan.

when we say "for the first year of x's life" we mean from the time x was born until its first birthday.

Nobody is saying Switch is 5 years old. Everyone agrees Switch is 4 years old.

And at the same time, Switch is now in its 5th year. It's basic arithmetic.

Monster Hunter Rise had a >50% drop this week in Comg. If the ratio works should be around ~90k
50% is already a big drop but at raw numbers anything below 100k means MHR direct fight will be with MH4 and not MHP3. Rise will need deep discounts at eShop in order to approach 5m if Japan follows comg at 4th week.

I just want to pitch in here because it's annoying me 🤭
First year - 0
Second year - 1
Third year - 2
Fourth year - 3
Fifth year - 4

Therefore, it is in its Fifth year having celebrated its fourth Anniversary.
That's they way everything is counted surely? The only example I can think of where 1 starts right at the begining is when you start school.

Like, I am 33 years old right now, but I am in my 34th year being alive!

I'm still salty about Soul Sacrifice dying along with the Vita as the series had potential. I guess to Sony, now that they have Monster Hunter again it's not really relevant but it's a damn shame. Also sounds like I dodged a bullet by ignoring FF Explorers...

Exactly. Overall what ended up happening was completely logical, and at the very least SCEJ were putting in some effort to keep third-party support going on the platform if the TGS conferences were anything to go by.

The big thing with Vita is that if you track when games come out it's obvious that the last first party games greenlit were close to, or before, launch.

Another aspect is that after the first two years it was somewhat obvious that to Sony the Vita only lived as a platform for third party support in order to feed those games towards the PS4.

"Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice ranked 1st for two consecutive weeks. The high degree of difficulty that is said to exceed Dark Souls is well received, and has resulted at high numbers in the second week of release. Yoshi's Crafted World was ranked second. This is a title I would like to sell in a long span.
In addition, PS4 Winning Post 9 at 3rd place (Switch is 15th) is the first numbering title after five years. Because of the nature of the game its sales in Hokkaido, where there are many breeding farms for racehorses, are extremely strong and there is big difference in sales situation by region."

"Monster Hunter Rise won 1st place for 4 consecutive weeks. First major update is planned at the end of April and we expect that sales will increase further in the future.
At new releases, PS4 version of Winning Post 9 2021 ranked 2nd and Switch version ranked 4th having a good start. In particular, top-selling stores for the game are in Hokkaido which is an interesting trend."

Even taking digital into account?

Digital is stonger the first weeks (especially if there are stock problems). After that, they usually tend to slow down until price drops or discounts.

The digital sales for the first two weeks are around 900k, probably a million by now, but from now on they'll be slower.

The big thing with Vita is that if you track when games come out it's obvious that the last first party games greenlit were close to, or before, launch.

I do think this often gets overlooked. Vita got incredible support for launch absolutely, but if you look at what they had to follow this up with it was basically nothing. The only titles green-lighted (greenlit?) after the console launched were:

America: Ports (Borderlands, HD Collections like God of War/Sly etc.)
Europe: Spanish-developed shovelware (Muppets) or xDev projects (BigFest)
Japan: Soul Sacrifice Delta

Everything major that released in 2013-2014 like Freedom Wars, Killzone, Oreshika, Tearaway had already been started in 2011 or earlier.

As soon as those initial sales numbers came in, WWS was basically checked out (look at them shutting BigBig, Liverpool & Zipper for proof of that) and they switched to PS ecosystem mode with Vita getting the cross-platform games from PS3.

It's basically the polar opposite of what Nintendo did with Wii-U and amusingly, final results for both platforms were largely similar.

FWIW, i thought sony's first party efforts for the Vita were at least better than what they were on PSP, but people don't talk about it because the PSP sold well. (on the back of 3rd party games).

MHP3. has always been too much to compete with imho
MH4 in Japan, with significantly stronger performances oversee already is a HUGE success for Capcom

50% is already a big drop but at raw numbers anything below 100k means MHR direct fight will be with MH4 and not MHP3. Rise will need deep discounts at eShop in order to approach 5m if Japan follows comg at 4th week.

If Japan can't reach 5 million w/ digital then there is no chance it will do 10 million without PC.

Don't think that was ever realistic, personally. 7 or 8m worldwide on Switch, similar to World on PS4, would be a tremendous result.

A lot of people felt that World's western success was a bit of a one off. Rise doesn't need to do 10m on Switch alone to consolidate the huge growth of the MH brand.
