Somewhere. I think.
Was thinking about Nintendo's lack of big new game for Golden Week, and realised they could've pulled a Switch bundle with Mario Maker 2 as DL code (like they did for Smash).

But since full reveal isn't until next week (at the earliest), it's not going to happen.

Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn is at bargain bins.

The only positive is that Nintendo is finally done with 3DS releases, support in 2018 looked and eventually was a big mistake.

That's the first week since launched it's sold more on PS4.

Week 14:

18./16. [NSW] Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! (Square Enix) {2019.03.20} – 3,161 / 31,999
19./17. [PS4] Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! (Square Enix) {2019.03.20} – 3,061 / 28,652

Week 13:

16./05. [NSW] Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! (Square Enix) {2019.03.20} – 5,244 / 28,838
17./07. [PS4] Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! (Square Enix) {2019.03.20} – 4,722 / 25,591

Week 12:

05./00. [NSW] Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! (Square Enix) {2019.03.20} – 23,594 / NEW
07./00. [PS4] Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! (Square Enix) {2019.03.20} – 20,869 / NEW

So no, it doesn't have better legs. In fact, neither does the Switch version. The two have been selling pretty much the same every week, if you don't take into account statistical noise (which is the first time this is happening with multiplat releases).

04./00. [NSW] Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! <RPG> (Square Enix) {2019.03.20} (¥4.800) - 28.509 / NEW

If, in 3 years, we had a week where Chocobo Mystery Dungeon sold one copy on Switch and two on PS4, would you use that as proof that the game has better legs on PS4?

Pretty clear to me from these numbers that both versions have very similair legs which is interesting. Thanks for compiling all the weeks.

Battlefield V, Left Alive and Anthem have hit crazy low prices at retailers. Prices have been slashed by 70-80% and there's still plenty of unsold stock.

First game was 18.3GB on Xbox with most of it dedicated to cutscenes. They'll probably squeeze the first game on a 16GB cart and the rest would be downloadable.
They can probably squeeze FFXIII on to a 16GB card with 720p fmv sequences and one audio track. SE also used a 32GB card for the Japanese and Asian releases of FFX/X-2 HD so that may be viable globally too by the time FFXIII Trilogy is ready to go. XIII-2 and Lightning Returns were much smaller too iirc.

Chocobo's Dungeon is showing better legs on PS4 than Switch.
It's been sold out on Switch.

Did Nintendo not realized that people moved out from 3DS? I mean, 3DS support from anyone else stopped two years ago.

It's time to 3DS rest together with Jotaro.
There were two options. Not release a game in development because you know it will bomb or release it knowing it will bomb and hope for the best.

NSW legs: 10.311 units
PS4 legs: 8.820 units

It's difference of 1491 units. In terms of FW%, it's 36% for NSW and 42% for PS4, but all in all, it's pretty comparable. Especially the last two weeks.

Ahh to be honest I figured it would have been the release on FFX having an effect.

The Switch version of Chocobo had some stock problems and we know how long they take to restock it, we'll see if the trend changes the following weeks.

So they did end up pulling an Octopath on it after all...

***

Just noticed it in Dengeki chart:

49./00. [NSW] V-Rally 4 (Oizumi Amuzio) {2019.04.11} - 613 / NEW

So not only this is a mega flop (not sure how Oizumi Amuzio can keep publishing flops after flops like this), but PS4 version didn't even chart even though that's precisely the kind of game you'd expect to sell more on PS4. I don't get it. Even if it's #51 with 605 units sold...

Dengeki

FY 2018-19 - Publishers

Nintendo (excluding The Pokémon Company)

9 of 10 companies in Top 10 = same as last year.

Microsoft: #29 > #7. Thanks Minecraft! (740k on Switch).
Level-5: #7 > 16. Best-selling game was The Snack World on Switch (120k)... yup

Unless there's a massive unannounced game from a third party Nintendo should probably clear 40% of the market this fiscal year?

I was thinking 40%+ for Nintendo alone and possibly 50%+ for Nintendo + TPC.
what all are the big 400k+ third party games?

is MH World a retail release?

There's Yokai, the usual stuff like CoD, etc.
Maybe one of Sony's mega first party games hits this year like Tsushima.

Then on Nintendo's side we know what they have lined up.
We'll see after E3 I guess.

DQXIS might do 400k+ but YW4 is the only likely game to do that much.

Just on the Nintendo end though it's that they have a lot more games this year, including Animal Crossing, and the evergreens are still going to be selling too(with more of them on the market).

Games take a while to develop. Nintendo gambled on the 3DS staying relevant post-Switch and lost that bet, but went and pushed them out anyway because they were mostly done.

Oh yeah, I'm assuming that PS4 Persona game(s) is this year....maybe.

Not that it'd do 400k but it could be notable.

Except that a new Kiry title came out to Switch a year ago, pivoting development to HD from a 240p handheld isn't so easy for a game that was in the middle or close to the end of its development. All first party games in 2018 and 2019 were greenlighted from 2017 or earlier, if Nintendo could forecast the collapse of 3DS would be so immediate they wouldn't dedicate resources to it. Sushi Striker and Captain Toad were the easiest ones to be ported on Switch and that happened.

[3DS] Picross e9 _3DS Download Software_ |DL| <PZL> (Nintendo) {2018.08.08} (¥462)
[3DS] Luigi's Mansion <ACT> (Nintendo) {2018.11.08} (¥4.980)
[3DS] Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey <RPG> (Nintendo) {2018.12.27} (¥4.980)
[3DS] Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn <ACT> (Nintendo) {2019.03.07} (¥4.980)

I'll be honest, I thought there were more than that. I do believe that more could have been done, but hey, I'm not a developer at Nintendo so I don't know the reality of the situation. Either way I'm glad to see them finally moving on from it.

There were two options. Not release a game in development because you know it will bomb or release it knowing it will bomb and hope for the best.
In most cases, the latter is the right move.

But honestly for a few of the games, I think the former option or not starting the game at all would be the better option, so that team could move on to something else quicker

Actually really surprised by Labo VR but it is a neat concept, and definitely seems to be moving in ways unlike the previous kits. Can't wait till we see how it does in the Golden Week period.

I think the best option they could've considered was to have greenlit some 3DS/Switch dual release projects. Most users who buy new videogame consoles within the first year are thirsty for software to play on their new console. They also are videogame enthusiasts and are likely to purchase a higher than average amount of software. I think titles such as the Link's Awakening remake, the M&L remakes, Pokemon US/UM, Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, Warioware Gold, Luigi's Mansion remake, Samus Returns remake, Poochy & Yoshi's Wooly World, and Hey! Pikmin would've been great candidates for dual system releases. It would've provided support for the dying system while also giving something small to Switch owners that were starving for games. Some of them could've gotten away with digital only releases on Switch as well.

Getting pretty close to the investors meeting without Mario Maker 2's release date.
Would be weird to show up and say "the biggest game of the first quarter/first half of the year is out in less than 2 months...but we won't say when 🤫"

Do we know at what time the investors reports usually are?

That's good if you have hindsight, but in the end Nintendo probably thought even if the 2018/2019 3DS support bombed they'll be fine.

Nintendo simply treated the 3DS in the same way as they treated the GBA and DS when they were each replaced by their successors. They all got healthy post-replacement support well into the first couple years of life of their successors and the 3DS just continued that trend.

WarioWare Gold and Hey! Pikmin both rely heavily on the 3DS's features, there was no chance of them making the jump.

Last Nintendo DS game was Kirby Mass Attack, 6 months after 3DS launch. No other games were launched by Nintendo after 3DS released. Pokémon Black 2/White 2 was released more than one year after 3DS launch, though, but that was The Pokémon Company. It is also true that 3DS was completely replacing DS and Wii was sort of alive so substitution had to be faster.

Nintendo was much more active on GBA after DS launch, though. Many games were released in 2005 and 2006, even big ones like Mario Tennis and Mother 3:

Rhythm Heaven
Bit Generations
Team Building: Calciobit
Mother 3
Eyeshield 21: Devilbats Devildays
Mother 1+2 [Value Selection]
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Polarium Advance
Drill Dozer
Mario Tennis: Power Tour
Dr. Mario & Puzzle League
Nonono Puzzle Chai-Rian
D.K: King of Swing
The Tower SP
Dynasty Warriors Advance
Hanjuku Eiyuu
Mario Party Advance
Yoshi Topsy-Turvy

do you think that Sony new "censoring" policy will cost em even more ground on the Japanese market?

No most publishers are happy to abide rather than skip that ecosystem and they have no good reason to skip that ecosystem in the first place.

At the very least it'll give them incentive to start moving to Switch. Steam IIRC is barely a thing in Japan, so if you want your game uncensored, Nintendo is the only place you can go.

Compile Heart and to a lesser extent D3 are the only ones evidently doing this. I don't think we'd have seen their support without the new policies affecting them on Sony's ecosystem.

I'm also curious if this starts a ripple effect. If more and more JP devs start moving to Switch because of this, or simply release more and more uncensored versions of games on Switch, if the fanbase will also start migrating over, hence JP support as a whole will start moving more and more over.

It's why Vita got so much JP support and which in turn made JP games sell more on Vita than 3DS, despite the HUGE install base advantage for the 3DS.

aint there an older interview that devs actually are not happy cause its a guideline-less screening where they have to submit to Sony, then wait for em to answer back, and then, when they are near completion of a project, start to patch out whatever Sony did not like, something that costs both time and money??

They're not happy but there's been no evidence of anything's actually happening. The Senran kagura game for example didn't move to switch after it ended up in no man's land as a result of the guidelines. They straight up switched to another project. By large most publishers are just erring on the side of caution regarding releases rather than doing anything drastic which makes little sense in the first place.

they might not be happy, but they're stuck inbetween a rock and a hard place. they'd have to begrudgingly support the system if they want to make ends meet

That and there's almost no chance they'll willingly ditch the ecosystem they've been generating a fanbase on for generations. If this was Nintendo doing it they'd happily avoid the system.

As mentioned previously, it made more sense when the new systems were backwards compatible so it was a poor call to treat it the same

What would help out Final Fantasy XIII immensely is if they can get the offline rendered assets rendered in engine. Given Switch (arguably) is more powerful than previous generation hardware, as well a modern port would also be on PS4 and likely Xbox One, I'd imagine it'd be feasible for a 30fps locked port on Switch to do so. That would immensely cut down on file space, and possibly enough room to do dual audio on top of that.

The only reason they seemed to have done this in the first place was due to performance concerns and issues. This shouldn't be an issue for future ports.

I am curious about one issue though... Would "My Hands" possibly cause licensing issues going forward? Since I imagine Square Enix only licensed usage of the song for so many years and specific platforms, it'd likely be a ridiculous upfront cost for a port effort.

I'm assuming provided they still have the individual audio stems (or even the last cutscene mix with "Kimi ga Iru Kara" intact, since that was a very, very, late localization change), they could just drop back to "Kimi ga Iru Kara"?

That issue I've been wondering a bit about, honestly.

Oh no, I completely agree with you. Most of those games should've been released on both platforms.

But the reasoning is pretty obvious. Nintendo were just continuing their usual tradition... except they didn't consider the huge negative effect that a lack of BC would have.

From the few cases we have as well the censored PS4 versions have outsold the uncensored Switch versions. In the future games will be censored by default.

It's a waste of money to make two versions.
