YW4 intro looks cool. L5 seems to be back on track, but that will depend on what they can do post-IE

Many releases this week but most of them are low profile, nothing opened at big numbers. The lack of big title hurts Golden Week again.

Cuphead is #1 in the eShop charts in Japan?
Other more educated members might have seen it coming but I definitely didn't.

While the game was available on Xbox since launch, with the Switch version the game finally got translated to Japanese (pretty well done too). The game is excellent, the things that were holding it back during its first launch are gone now so it finally got the sales.

Mario Maker 2 extended info won't come before May. With Nintendo's shadow reveal of release date and absence of details and promotion the surprise in the end will be if first Switch revision will be out after June, not before.

If the Switch revision is coming in June with Mario Maker 2, Nintendo clearly doesn't want to announce it before Golden Week because it would affect sales during this period.
That's why a reveal would come after GW, when sales slow down a lot, the slowest period of the year.

I was thinking Nintendo wouldn't be too hung about a holiday in a single region, but it is their home turf so i guess that makes sense.

Mario Maker 2 releasing late June should give them an ample enough window to announce it in May. Likely mid may.

Was wondering why Nintendo had seemingly so much for switch from June onwards, but May was completely empty of first party releases. I guess this would make sense. Announcing it in May would not hamper Switch hardware/software sales of April's titles and if it comes out with Mario Maker 2 then it'll help that game tremendously

Yeah, that's what I think too.

I figured that if there's indeed a Switch revision in June, then Maker Maker 2 would be the key games launching alongside it. And given the utter lack of details about the game (we've heard and seen more of Astral Chains since its announcement than MM2...), it's clear something's off.

Was assuming that if SMM2 got full blown reveal before GW, then Switch revision wasn't in June, but if nothing was announced, then that would confirm it.

Of course, Nintendo had to throw a curveball and go with release date + pre-orders start in Japan WITHOUT showing or revealing anything about the game, ha ha.

Got the feeling the second week of May is going to be busy.

About GW, good thing Switch revision wasn't announced before it. We're already in for one weak *ss Golden Weak, I don't want to imagine how bad things would be if the only platform able to sell decently would see people just hold off purchasing it in favour of new model.

Well, if we do get a Switch revision in late June, May and June are going to be quite ugly anyway.

Probably, but given that it would (apparently) not exactly be a replacement but a "lite" model, it may be a little less brutal, since, depending on what the new model is, some people might prefer the OG Switch anyway.

Granted I am not Japanese, but if I would have decided to buy a Switch only now, personally I would prefer the first Switch in my household to be an OG Switch and not a Switch mini.

Japan makes up a much bigger % of HW sales for Nintendo then it does for the other console makers. They will be more influenced by it when making these decisions.

Nothing indicates the revision will have drastic differences from OG Switch at features. In fact Nintendo clearing inventory last quarter shows it will be in direct competition with it.

Clearing inventory certainly indicates what you are saying. If there are no drastic differences, then indeed there would be direct competition, and the new will replace the old. On the other hand, if the next model has, for example, non detachable controls, then it will be imo a matter of choice and not of one replacing the other (but then the clearing of inventory doesn't make sense).

80% sell-through for Langrisser (no platform breakdown for it)

Million-sellers

FY 2018-19 saw big drop in million-sellers, and worse sales gap between successful games and flops/bombas.

2017-18
  • Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Nintendo 3DS): 2.32 million units
  • Splatoon 2 (Nintendo Switch): 2.25 million units
  • Monster Hunter World (PlayStation 4): 1.97 million units
  • Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Ages (Nintendo 3DS): 1.8 million units
  • Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (PlayStation 4): 1.38 million units
7 million-sellers (only listing 5).

2018-19
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch): 3.05 million units
  • Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! / Let's Go, Eevee! (Nintendo Switch): 1.47 million units
2 million-sellers.

Sales gap:
  • Million-sellers: 7 > 2
  • 1 million units to 500 000 units: 1 > 7
  • 500 000 units to 200 000 units: 15 > 19
  • less than 10 000 units: 165 > 196 (39.2% of games released)

Million-sellers

FY 2018-19 saw big drop in million-sellers, and worse sales gap between successful games and flops/bombas.

2017-18
  • Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Nintendo 3DS): 2.32 million units
  • Splatoon 2 (Nintendo Switch): 2.25 million units
  • Monster Hunter World (PlayStation 4): 1.97 million units
  • Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Ages (Nintendo 3DS): 1.8 million units
  • Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (PlayStation 4): 1.38 million units
7 million-sellers (only listing 5).

2018-19
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch): 3.05 million units
  • Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! / Let's Go, Eevee! (Nintendo Switch): 1.47 million units
2 million-sellers.

Sales gap:
  • Million-sellers: 7 > 2
  • 1 million units to 500 000 units: 1 > 7
  • 500 000 units to 200 000 units: 15 > 19
  • less than 10 000 units: 165 > 196 (39.2% of games released)

This year should be an improvement with Mario Maker, Animal crossing and Pokemon all being likely million sellers. Yokai Watch is probable as well. Smash was at 2.35 million at the start of the year and is now at 3 million. So 1 million is doable for it. NSMBU DX will likely be a million seller as well unless Mario Maker completely kills it. Unsure what else could, unless Fire Emblem or Luigi's Mansion explode in popularity like Zelda, Smash, and 3D Mario have done on Switch.

No sales data from either famitsu or Media Create next week, right?
Probably means this is the Media Create thread we stick to till then.

Hope we get some clues of how games are performing in the meantime

Luigi's Mansion 2 sold 1M on 3ds in Japan. LM3 is definitely a candidate for 1M as well.

Last year April marked some of the strongest weeks for Switch software during the second quarter(outside of Mario Tennis Aces launch). You had Labo's dropping during Week 16. While Golden Week last year coincided with DKC:TF's launch, this made Week 18 the strongest week during last year's second quarter in terms of both hardware and software for the Switch. This year we don't have any title launching GW. Right now Switch's top 10 software for 2019 is averaging around 75-95K per week, so for the next 3 weeks we will probably see something close to 350K software sold without any major releases with GW bump. Making the gap around 200K mid May with Yo-Kai Watch 4 and Super Mario Maker 2 set to launch in June.
Like I extrapolated a few weeks back, the Switch Top 10 Software could end up above 4.5M by the end of the quarter thanks to those two releases and continued sales of the rest of the top 10.
