Japan's PS4 userbase seems to love their games to be as western as possible I guess. That's why it's useless to compare them with Nintendo too much, Sony created a completely different audience over the years with their focus on AAA.

Hah, I remember when somebody said that the PS4 didn't have any 100k first week sellers coming in the near future and I asked about Days Gone.

FFXII opened up just under 100k on PS4, though maybe the tail will be much better for the Switch version as that seems to be the pattern.

Much better for Days Gone than I expected, it seems that criticism does not affect it.

I mean theres literally no way to prove whether thats true or not. It could have sold a ton more copies if it reviewed well.

Its fair to say that the Zombie "fatigue" isn't a real thing. I'm not surprised because for all the talk of it being a thing... there haven't been that many zombie games, certainly not on a scope of a Days Gone

114k? OMG that's a fantastic number for Days Gone. I would have never guessed that. 20% rise in switch HW compared to last year, will be really interested to see the number for golden weeks.

I'm just waiting on the separate thread now. "days gone massive success in Japan, outsells the rest of the top ten combined"
People have made threads for less.

"Days Gone Japan launch beats the UK by quite a margin" would be a better title though. And it's true. Times are a changing and Japan is more important then ever for Western focused developers.

I remember that too. Good shout with days gone, personally I would have thought it needed digital to make the 100k mark but it easily beat most of our expectations.

And people wonder why Sony continues to not give a fuck about focusing on japanese titles/studios when their western titles continue to sell way better... and in japan of all places.

I can't imagine dmc1 will even chart. If dragon's dogma does 10k opening week, what can we expect from dmc1? 5k?
Isnt it DL only anyways? I think price will affect its sales the most though, if its $20 ide buy it to get my pre-astral chain/bayo fix. Either way I could be off base but 10K for a super late port of DD doesn't seem bad?

I don't think western reviews matter at all in Japan. They may only affect the legs in places like the US and Europe.
I'm sure the reviews affected sales all over the world but the reception from players has been super positive. Word of mouth should more then make up for the lost sales at launch.

Sony got their strategy spot on this gen.

Holy shit I wasn't expecting those numbers for Days Gone! Impressive. Switch still doing great and PS4 with a decent baseline I guess.
It's amazing how long it took for Smash to reach 3 million units in Japan, just a few months and boom!

So 2 years and 2 months to overtake PS4. Well done Nintendo. They definitely have Japan figured out.

Golden Week sales will indicate PS4 summer baseline. Depending on the bump it got sub 10k could be the rule and not the exception.

And Japanese companies still won't care lol.
such a strange situation.

I agree with this, players reception seems stronger to me than critics, and the word of mouth around the game is very, very good.

Switch ports are doing well. Sales of FF ports show there's an untapped audience on Nintendo platforms. I think those games will have very good legs especially on the eShop.

Huh, Switch version almost sold as much as the PS4 port? That's unexpected.
Quite expected and in line with FFX/FFX-2. Just shows how many PS4 owners already played the game on their PS3. Whereas when you have a "new" remaster game like FFXII which wasn't on PS3 then you see much higher sales.

Days Gone did great! I think Japan likes systemic open world games, given how well BOTW, Skyrim, Ubisoft games, and now this seem to have done there.

Days Gone performing this well in Japan is just so random. Lol I never expected that to happen honestly

I wonder how long it will take on mediacreate. I know their numbers are private now but surely they'll give updates for significant milestones?

When did a Nintendo console that's portable last not perform well in Japan? Has it ever happened?

I continue to be amazed at the strength of Smash here and worldwide. I thought it was a devoted fan kind of game where sales were front loaded to the december release.

Days Gone launched at a great time with nothing else to compete with.

Poor Yoshi too as NSMBU and MK continue to show how successful Wii U ports are doing (xeno x port please)

Curious as Nintendo does the same with their Japanese studios, they achieve the same successes and people also "demand" that they need more presence in the West.
