MH Rise outsold DMC 5 and RE3 Remake in one weekend and SFV in a month.

It vastly outperformed RE7, RE2 Remake and now a next-gen, six-platform-spanning RE 8 in it's opening weekend.

Remember the discussions as to whether a Switch-focused MH was necessary when World was already on the market?

Surely now the question should be whether Capcom has any reason to release all these games that aren't MH?
that argument was always super ridiculous and clearly just console warring. people saying basically since a switch MH won't outsell world, capcom shouldn't do it, it's not worth their time and they should instead focus on other things. meanwhile they ask for new games in series that have no chance of selling a fraction of what a switch MH could sell.

Well, I've always said that a Switch MH game would have made a lot of sense, so...
can I ask for a new Power Stone, now?
thx

Yeah, you would have people saying Capcom shouldn't make a new MH Switch game because it wouldn't sell as much as World and in the same post say Capcom should release a new DMC or Dragon's Dogma.

Regarding Monster Hunter same argument could be used that what's the point of doing Ace Attorney to other consoles than Switch.

Switch version sold more than PS4, XB1 and PC version combined. Clearly not worth their time and resources.

That's pretty much what some people say about certain third party ports for Switch too.

Ace Attorney sales on Xbox are so low that Capcom decided it doesn't worth the effort and resources.

Does anyone has the last known shipment data (worldwide) for Dragon Ball Xenoverse (1&2), FighterZ and Kakarot?

random comparison but maybe MHR against SSBU? They should be about the same, when factoring digital sales right?

Unless I am mixing up weeks, COMG sales chart for Golden Week had Snap at 114 points and MHR at 88, while actual numbers were 147.742 and 102.952 respectively, ~1300 factor for Snap and ~1170 factor for MHR.

So correlation was less consistent than what it was the preceding weeks?

I think it would generally just be interesting to see how it holds up against the switch evergreens.

Smash had the boost from holiday, and amazing legs. I think comparison will be fine as MHR should be almost 1000k while smash I believe after holiday was around 550k. Need to take A look. If MHR can stay close to its legs for the year, it should end up 4.5mil+

Week 6

00./02. [NSW] Monster Hunter Rise # <ACT> (Capcom) {2021.03.26} (¥7.990) - 102.952 / 2.073.323 (+19%)

02./01. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate # <FTG> (Nintendo) {2018.12.07} (¥7.200) - 63.277 / 2.691.364 <80-100%> (-76%)

Retail Difference is 618k.

ILL TRY to post a more detail post later but this up here for now. If I'm thinking right, this might be a good comparison to follow and get a good idea how MHR legs are

As of week 4, Rise had shipped around 2.89 - 3.1 million, factoring in a 35-40% digital ratio for its first four weeks of sales. If we add the last two weeks worth of retail sales data to that figure, we can estimate that Rise has moved 3.0 - 3.2 million units at minimum. (Which is in line with estimates of Capcom's shipment breakdown)

Then we come to more recent digital numbers. Given that the shortages have been resolved, digital sales are probably not as high any more. I'd say 10% (which is generally what it ends up being for a lot of reasonably popular games in Japan) is a "safe" figure to use for the last two weeks. If you go ahead and use that, it means MH Rise has moved somewhere between 3.1 - 3.3 million so far.

The big question is what the current shipment numbers are. Our last shipment update was on April 29th, when Capcom announced the game had shipped 6 million globally. At the time, the consensus was that Japan accounted for half (maybe a little more) of that figure. Going by that logic, they would probably have had to ship another few hundred thousand copies since.
I believe in the previous thread or the one before that, there was a game that did 30k on eShop and it was below Rise, while use did I think 80k-100k (I can't remember), so if digital is x>30k, and physical was ~80k, then digital would account 20-30% of the sales of the game in japan for that week. I could have that mistaken of course.

Bandai Namco games sales (retail + digital) divided by region (Thanks to Oscar Lemaire)

E1FrG4GXsAER3q0

Everything is growing thanks to the pandemic whereas Japan stays at its lowest level of the past 15y+.

I'm sure a lot of companies' data look this way. Only outlier is probably Konami. Nintendo gave them an opportunity to grow their Japanese sales, they just need to act on it.

I don't think a lot of JP companies didn't sell more units in Japan last FY than during the previous one.

Koei Tecmo, Marvelous and Capcom JP sales also grew significantly last FY.

Nah, Harada has no issues with (not paid for by Nintendo) Bandai Namco games doing well on Switch, as long as they are games like this.

Each family oriented Bandai Namco game on Switch that succeeds strengthens Harada's position, since it increases Bandai Namco profits, especially so since they are low investment games. If someone asked why none of "his" games are on Switch, Harada can spout some nonsense like his Xenosaga "research", and seal it with "look how well we are doing overall and we do have all these other games on Switch doing well, we know what we are doing" and no one will question him after that because BN are doing well.

You're probably right. It's a feat to sell less games during 2020 when that was one of the only things people could do during lockdown. I meant how Japanese growth couldn't keep pace with with Western sales prior to that.

Tbone5189 if you have trouble even imagining 9m HW for this fiscal year, what about rolling 4 quarters from the one in which the Switch 1.5 launches?

I think the best chance would be a Switch 1.5 launch in October, so Oct 2021-Sep 2022. That way you get both the huge initial shipment required for a new model, the main game that is supposed to release alongside it and the holiday sales in one single quarter, unlike what happened with the Switch Lite that boosted FY19 Q2 more than it did FY19 Q3. Of course a lot of stars would have to align...

As for the games lineup, you could have Breath of the Wild 2 in October on Switch 1.5 launch day, followed by Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl in November and that would pretty much seal the deal for biggest holiday quarter ever if the Switch doesn't lose momentum in the Summer. The next quarter gets Legends: Arceus probably in March and you'd have to hope for mainline entry level of sales all the while reaching a new audience. Then Splatoon 3 hits around June, maybe with a crazy MHP3rd-style launch/growth. The final quarter has a few possibilities, namely Tomodachi 3 or Dragon Quest XII which would obviously be huge system sellers.

This is basically the best scenario I can see for the Switch to match the DS' peak in hardware sales, but even then market saturation has to come into play at some point and make it increasingly unlikely as time goes by.

Needless to say that even first part of Golden Week wasn't enough for PS5 physical software sold to exceed the number of disk drive PS5 systems sold.

Resident Evil launch will be the only week so far this will change.

That's the weird part, they have like 4 years of hard data and facts yet some of the decision making seems to be still be based on Switch being a 3DS.

They could have it all yet limit themselves for non obvious reasons. Guess the goal was to keep Sony plattforms more relevant in Japan to prevent a pre PlayStation and dependence on Nintendo in Japan. Well...looking at the current situation it doesn't seem this was successful.

Still it's gonna be interesting to see how the Resistance 3rdParty games will perform the next couple years in Japan.
I wonder if, at some point, sales may dip low enough for many 3rd parties to not bother with a physical release in Japan for some games on PS5?

Digital only releases is the least of the problems PS5 can have when it comes to Japanese support.

Well according to some people all of the "missing" PS5 sales have already been subsumed by digital purchases!

Returnal topped the PSN PS5 chart for the whole month with one day tracked in Japan.

Let's say that it sold 5000 of these 6500 launch units on Day One.
Let's be optimistic and give it a 50% digital share.

Thats means the top selling digital PS5 game in April in Japan sold 5000 units and everything else is below that.

Returnal topping April sales on PS Store with one single day shows again digital can't save anything with so low software sales and PS5 so far lacks the big discounts other systems have that increase numbers a lot there.

Oof, this has to be the worst software performance I've ever seen.

Less than 5000 for everything else for the month and that is with a generous digital ratio for Returnal yeah that is quite terrible.

Oh this made me realise I missed the Japanese monthly ranking for April. Here it is, for those who missed it like me:

When you put it like that...

I mean, even the mythical 70% digital share that some love to apply to everything would only bump that threshold to 11.6k... which is still really poor.

Well we don't really know the digital number, although the reality is probably close.

Well, even if we consider it to be able to sell the same quantity digital than retail (let's pretend that the PS5 is pushing so hard in the digital field), it would have sold 6.573 copies
So for EVERYTHING on the PS5 store to be below that number, clearly giva us a picture of digital sales not THAT strong, in terms of global volumes in Japan, to change the terrible landscape that the PS5 software so far has generated in the Japanese market
