Yepper. But you're paying for a subscription right, not for the "game" I thought? I'm not sure how DQX's pricing works. I know real retail releases exist on other systems, including Switch.

Sorry if my wording is off here. :P
You pay for both. You buy the software and pay a subscription. The software entitles you to play for a month and after that during the 2 free hours every day.

If you are talking about the streaming version on d and 3DS, you pay a special subscription which pays for both the stream and the base sub.

He's claiming that the install base in Japan is lower than it should be and is what leads to poor support from Japanese companies.

That would be an argument (not even a good one granted) for Japanese centered games but RE is way bigger in the West where streaming wouldn't be feasible for a large number of people and the West has the Switch with a sizable lead over the 3DS.

I see that Capcom have really outdone themselves when it comes to Nintendo Switch support, I wonder what will be next.

Kind of hard to sell a cloud-streamed game at retail. It means the game is more or less like an interactive video; the game is fed to you over Wi-Fi and you play it. It's not running on the Switch itself, but I think on a PC over on Capcom's end.

Yeah, I was thinking if maybe it might have been something similar to DQX, which had a retail version including a download code for the app.

Re: Capcom. I don't think Capcom is dumb- they can read sales numbers and understand market trends as well as anyone. So I don't think they are blind to Switch's success.

I think the problem is Capcom has A- completely dedicated itself to AAA Western development and B- Largely because of A lack any resources or ability to pivot when needed. That's the real indictment of Capcom IMO. They aren't the only company to think Switch would fail- they do appear to be the only one not able to shift resources and take advantage.

Agreed.

But thats a really big issue for Capcom lacking that flexibillity.

Does the streaming service even support western streaming?
Seems like kind of a dead end if they don't
RE7 is a weird choice but probably the only one that would reasonably work well and basically the only modern game of note Capcom has on PC for this to work.

Might have been interesting as a way to get MHW on there early but if the speculated MHW Asia exclusivity deal is still in place, I imagine this won't be a workaround. Also need the PC port to work I imagineb

They aren't the only company to think Switch would fail-
off all studios out there, Capcom would be the less likely to have a reason to believe that (under common logic) cause
A) 3DS literally printed money for em, specially on their moment of most need when 2013 everyone was gambling who would buy em given the state they were in, MH4-G/U-X printed mad money for what likely was not an expensive game to develop cause 3DS potato assets
B) they were likely teh 1st company shows a Switch prototype and Nintendo took and implement direct feedback from em.

Capcom "support" for Switch is even more baffling the Bethesda (compared to their stance on WiiU) is now the 3rd party with most AAA support for Switch

Games "sold" as cloud rentals is something that could become more prominent in future - not only for Switch but in general, something that I'm not looking forward to, but similar to micro-DLC something that could succeed regardless in the long run.

At this point in time RE7 Cloud really isn't the optimal solution, it also doesn't really take advantage of the home and portable nature of the Switch. If it's used for same day releases of the most technically demanding games it wouldn't even be half bad at this price-point, but this would be seen as too generous by publishers, but RE7 is such an old game that they could have realized an actual port and physical release.

As for Capcom and Switch, reminds me of how they missed the boat with NDS, sure they also had successful games on DS, but were quite late and like most were beaten by the then newcomer as publisher Level5.

I think this is pretty objective.
Their approach to the system has been wrong, not because they didn't believe / trust in its success beforehand (this was done by almost everyone, and people know my stance on this issue, primarly due to Nintendo's will to not position it as a 3DS-too successor from the beginning), but because of almost all the subsequent actions they took/not took.
And of course I'm not pretending them to port AAA games to a weaker machine, but as you stated there could have been many actions to be taken way more logic to their business, seeing Switch's success on the ww market.
The only thing I'd like to underline is that with MH World incredible and record-setting success, they clearly did the right move with the franchise, a move that in terms of financial and management approach/result give us the best Capcom outlook since many years
I think most of the issues stem from Capcom's confusion on the concept of the platform.
Not sure if Nintendo just didn't try hard enough to sell them on it as a 3DS successor or maybe they thought it was a Wii U successor, but it would make no sense for Capcom to completely skip the successor of your biggest money maker for the last 6 years.

As for MHW, it's a decision that made them a lot of money but it's not like excluding Switch gained them a lot of sales. An HD console MH with a lot of marketing could've and would've happened regardless of whether they were more keen on Switch. Multiplatform seemed like the logical choice.
A lot of the QoL changes are things people have been asking for since like Tri G, lol
Could've kept the old audience and the expanded one as well.

Except Capcom, which keep making the most mindless decisions every two months. God knows what happen at the head of the company.
My most realistic guess is that they're on very shaky financial ground, and have decided to bet everything in hopes of getting a multi-millions sale blockbuster in the West. They decided to abandon the Japanese market and don't want to go slow and steady with smaller releases — instead, like a gambling addict down to his last $20 bill, they want to put it all on a handful of bets and hope to hit the big jackpot that'll turn everything around.

Either that, or the executive management is stoned out of their gourds.

Why not both ?

But i wonder, now that they got a hit of AAA blockbuster sales with MHW, will they ever be able to stop, or will we see them in 5 years time in some auction, selling of their IPs while closing down because they couldnt replicate the success of MHW often and big enough to stay afloat ?

Capcom's long term outlook is grim, but not that grim. You guys need to chill a bit over this REVII business.

I think Capcom do have some management problems though. They shouldn't run it as a family business anymore. Capcom is an International company in a very volitale field. They should hire a professional CEO to sort things out.

When you look the way SE, BNEI and Konami are managed, you see they have clear goals and strategies. Capcom is just chasing trends here and there, looking for the highest bidder.

You mean the executive management where the CEO hires his son as the COO, and promotes his other son to a board member after placing him in a producer position to manage the Monster Hunter franchise after other people made it a hit?
Tsujimoto handled the IP rather well though...but yeah it must suck to make a game/series so big that its up there with Dragon Quest and Pokemon only to have it "snatched away" from you.

Other people? Ryozo was one of the lead designers of the first game and Portable 1

Almost all the producers left the company before the franchise was big, around 2003-6
Okamoto (03), Funamizu, Sudo, Itsuno (04), Tanaka (06)

If you mean what I'm talking about when I say mindless decisions :
- releasing a port of SF2 of all games when the SFCollection was already in development for the machine at that time
- not releasing Okami HD day and date
- not releasing any old RE game port despite RER1+2 selling so well last year
- localize MHXX one year later and 8 months after a better MH game released
- not releasing the Disney afternoon collection on the console that has the most retro-centric userbase
- not releasing the DMC HD collection when the re-release of Bayonetta 1+2 proved that there's a sizeable BTA audience already present
- refusing to use a single cartridge (that wouldn't cost more than a PS4 Blu-ray) for both MMLC or MMXLC games and thus alienating part of the target audience
- refusing to release retail versions of MMLC, MMXLC, RER1+2 in Europe despite being an important market for Capcom
- and now, releasing a cloud version of RE7 exclusively in its worst market out of the big 3 instead of making a full price port for a worldwide release

and it has been barely more than a year
Keep in mind that it was discovered that that ultra SF2 port that they convinced nintendo to publish for them was gonna be apart of the SFCollection, so once they found out how good the game sold, might aswell verbally said "shit" and removed it from the collection and greenlit a switch port for it

Are these download cards only? I have a very hard time seeing Minecraft only selling 73k in Japan.
I'd say it's very likely that Unlimited World Red, DQX and Minecraft passes their Wii U counterparts when all is said and done (if they havnt already if it's only download cards counted)

So if I'm reading you correctly:

- USF2 was going to be part of the collection.
- Collection was initially only on PS4 and XBO, not on Switch.
- Switch would just get USF2 on its own.
- USF2's success on Switch convinced Capcom to give Switch owners the collection, and removed USF2 from it to avoid redundancy.

Basically sounds like Mass Effect Trilogy all over again. But the thing is, USF2 was by Capcom Japan internally IIRC. The collection is entirely by Digital Eclipse.

Unless USF2 in the collection was going to be by DE as well but I guess it'd have been the barebones version more based on HD Remix?

Capcom was def. going for that Vita/WiiU treatment with the Switch. As in port some irrelevant games over that underperform so you can justify staying away for the whole gen and put focus/concentrate Resources on PS4/XBO/PC development where its needed.

So lipservice support for Nintendo without going all "burn every bridge" ala Squaresoft in the 90. Only issue is that Switch turned out to be a success and people kept demanding Capcom games on the system. So right now they are caught in a weird place, with having to open up whatever little Resources available to deliver something on Switch in addition to the standard systems.

I dont think their support is as bad as some people here are suggesting....but i also think that if we dont get big Switch related announcements from them by e3 and/or Nintendo fall pre-TGS conference it likely wont happen and that are gearing up for PS5/Nextbox already.
