200k to 250k FW with 500k LTD i think?

I think L5 is blinded by the success of YW there. They put all their eggs into YW hoping it will be long term success IP. You can see that by how they put almost all their upcoming new IP on backburner like Fantasy Life or Snack World.

And then comes the mobile disaster and HD gaming is hard guys. And now they are in this big mess.

Their success really seemed to had gotten over their head a bit, as they seemingly were not happy with 300k-500k sellers in Japan. They practically abandoned 3DS mid gen in favour of mobile (Fantasy Life 2 and Layton 7 for example), it was basically only their golden goose Youkai Watch for years on the system and this because it was a million seller on 3DS. Lady Layton came at the very tail end of its life as a multiplat with mobile, SnackWorld seemed also like a similar situation to how DQ11 was handled (3DS version as damage control) as their mobile games obviously weren't as successful as anticipated.

Taking a closer look, it's really surprising how much time has passed already.

In order for that to happen, someone needs to show out with a decent marketing campaign. Who would do such a thing is up in the air, but I guess It'd be Nintendo. Would be interesting to see someone like Bamco tackle it though. L5America probably doesn't have the resources

I don't think Bamco has anything to offer. NNK(+2) only sold about what Fantasy Life and Youkai Watch sold despite their "bigger"(read: more core oriented) marketing
.
Level 5 needs to analyze what went wrong then place a conservative mid term strategy to pick the company up.
They mishandled their IPs big time by constant milking till the customers got bored, forced their Tri-media concept on all of their IPs etc.

A big part of their problem is that like everyone else they decided back in 2013 that Nintendo's days were numbered and they had to focus on platforms like PS4 and mobile.

Their issues with managing their ips are probably far bigger than their platforms of choice right now tbh

They're directly related. Fantasy Life was a million seller WW and was ripe for iteration on 3DS/Switch, trying to target PS4/NSW/Mobile simultaneously for Inazuma Eleven Ares no doubt contributed to its delays, Nino Kuni 2 took resources that could have been better spent on their other IPs.

Also remember when Wonder Flick was a thing, and was meant to come to everything but 3DS?

I always wonder if the leads at level 5 are thinking like us and consider this, i imagine it's hard to be in this mindset when its you/your company thats experiencing it

The only thing going to effect pokemon sales in Japan is if it is true that the series is slumping. Let's Go was a slide in Japan compared to the rise in the West. In theory, Sword and Shield could continue the decline.

There's no chance Sword/Shield decline from Let's Go.

Remakes always sell worse than new mainline entries. And Let's Go was a remake of a remake essentially.

I don't know if it will have any effect on sales but judging by Twitter and Youtube it at least isn't an Era bubble thing
it's hard to say how much that will or won't matter until preorder analytics come in. remember when Call of Duty had a trailer downvote bombing?

The same people who care enough about the series for the Pokédex thing to be an issue for them, inherently care enough about the series that they're gonna get the game regardless

That's not quite it, I agree that I don't think that the sales will be effected, but that has nothing to do with it being an issue or not. People buying the game just won't know, how would they? Nintendo doesn't republish (let alone translate) NoA's Treehouse videos when they do their E3 stuff, so unless it gets printed in CoroCoro, or they mention it in a promotional video, or if some popular YouTuber like Hikakin hear and talk about it, it won't be known until children start trying to get their favorite Pokemon into the game to find out they can't.

I'm 99% sure this is going to be covered by almost all popular Pokemon YouTubers.

The pokedex thing won't matter too much atleast for the 1st month because its the new pokemon thats gonna have the attention, people arent buying the new Pokemon game to play the old Pokemon, but by the time it's cooled down i bet they planned a patch anyway to put more Pokemon back in

Will be curious to see if Game Freak does patch them in.

They've never cared to do any patches ever.

Even if this isn't a major feature for many players, Game Freak is basically just ripping off people by charging a service to transfer Pokemon that they'll never get to transfer possibly. It's a super scummy service, one of the worst in gaming, and Game Freak's ripping people off is going to be promoted constantly by YouTubers and others to possibly cause brand damage to the series.

Masuda is letting the news out now so that they can counter with 5 months worth of good PR. Reveal new features, cool Pokemon/character designs, basically change the topic of the conversation. In the meantime let the team decide whether to patch in or not. I doubt sales would be affected greatly, but the sales show declining trend in Japan anyway. Like the games before it, there will be some people who blame the thing they dislike the most as the main culprit of its underperformance.

I'm curious what this threads thoughts are on the DQ character getting into Smash. Do y'all think when the DQ character is released that it will cause a large bump for Smash Ultimate? I feel like it'll get a bump myself but I can't really think of how big it'll be.

A bump can happen. Sales are going to increase the closer we get to Mario Maker 2 anyways.

I don't think the Pokédex issue will have much of any impact on sales but potentially this type of negative word of mouth may impact the franchise.

Also I think most people complaining aren't necessarily saying it will sell worse, just that the game will be much worse as a result.

I have no idea how it will effect sales per se, but unlike 99% of the things PokeEra complains about, having your favorite Pokemon cut absolutely will be something that will create bad word of mouth among the wider Pokemon audience.

The exact effect will depend on exactly how bad the cuts are, whether Game Freak plans to address the issue post-launch, and how well Game Freak can minimize the bad PR prior to launch.

Doraemon Story of Seasons appears to have started strong and word of mouth is good. 40-50k opening is possible.

Hm, that's a good point that not all Pokémon fans around the world are even aware of the information yet. But my point is more about the invested fans, the ones talking about it online - I feel like the main people who seem riled up about it/are vocal about it are the hardcore Pokémon fans (who will buy the game anyway). The general audience or less hardcore fans either don't know about it, or likely won't really mind. A lot of people like myself mostly play new Pokémon games for the new Pokémon and not much else.

I'm not sure how big of a bump it will be considering Smash has almost outsold DQXI, and will definitely do so in the future.

DQXIS will probably benefit from the Luminary being in Smash though.

Why not both? DQXI cross Smash sounds like a strong combination, for both franchises. I think Smash will get a good boost from the Luminary in Smash, and maybe DQXI S can get some help by pulling in some extra audiences via Smash. The latter will be hard to quantify, even after release, though.

In the best case Pokémon HOME was going to launch two months later (No date yet) so I do not see how it will drastically affect sales.

The vast majority of players who buy the game day 1, complete it and after a month they have left, they will not notice any difference.

Good points. Myself, I feel like the impact won't be too noticeable, either. Like KTSlime said, most people won't really know, and probably a lot won't even find out after launch, either, due to what you mention here.

If Sword/Shield declines from Sun/Moon, then I feel that is an indication of declining interest in Pokémon, not due to this controversy.

Why not both? DQXI cross Smash sounds like a strong combination, for both franchises. I think Smash will get a good boost from the Luminary in Smash, and maybe DQXI S can get some help by pulling in some extra audiences via Smash. The latter will be hard to quantify, even after release, though.

The bump for DQXIS will a lot more notable in the west.

[NDS] Ni no Kuni: The Jet Black Mage - 600.000
[PS3] Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - 1.330.000
[PS4/PC] Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom - 1.000.000

Ni no Kuni II was at 900k 1 year ago.

Oof, those are bad legs even by JRPG standards.
