Level 5 hasn't found a hit for some time now. Financials must not be the best and they continue to be super slow at releases.

It is true that it doesn't matter how much you earn if you spend a lot but they really earnt a lot of money during YW craze and the franchise still have some revenues to rack up. Between Inazuma Eleven peak and Yo-kai Watch one there were many flops and years apart. Sure, they must start to announce/reveal something new sooner or later.

It's a big blow for L5 but it sucks for Nintendo too. Yokai Watch and Monster Hunter were huge 3rd party pillars of the 3DS. One is gone and the other don't sell much anymore. 2 years in and the Switch is still looking for its first big 3rd party hit (besides Minecraft obviously but that's on a league of its own). And there's nothing much on the horizon.

You can already feel they are cutting budget on stuff like the Inazuma Eleven Orion anime, especially after Ares.
As a fan who watch it every week, it's really irritating.

DQ is definitely there.

Bear in mind that YW wasn't even existing during 3DS first couple of years in the market.

The platform is popular and software is selling. Surprises might come sooner or later. Adoption has been slower than 3DS so games like YW might come a bit later.

Biggest third-party release for the Switch and the Switch sales are the second worst week of the year..

Psycho, I think you're forgetting about the deal starting this week: Switch will be sold with a 3,000 Yen coupon included, and retailers started promoting the deal since two weeks ago. Of course hardware sales can't be too high, people will wait for this week to pick up the hardware (and SMM2).

Somewhere. I think.
10./08. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe <New Super Mario Bros. U \ New Super Luigi U> <ACT> (Nintendo) {2019.01.11} (Â¥5.980) - 4.044 / 638.709 (-7%)

Interesting that it's the game that was the least impacted by the drop this week, despite SMM2 launching on Friday. Curious to see if it's going to get a bump / drop.

Nintendo isnt invested in the IP like that, they knew that it would fall off and YW4 wasn't treated like a mayor release from Nintendo.

Hino fucked up and is on his own for now. Ninokuni 2 and YW4 with those lackluster commercial responses.

Time to focus again in what made them special during the DS Era - sometimes less is more.

Ouch at YW4. What a dreadful week. Switch down WoW and YoY due to the upcoming promotion, every other platform is also down, and all the evergreens declined this week as well. Hopefully Mario Maker 2 and the promotion do well.

Lol what happened to YW4?
I remember last year we were talking about that as a potential (almost assuredly) million seller.

Level 5 not looking good right now

They fucked it up big time, i mean they were releasing 3 versions or something in the same year if i remember correctly.

In fact, the franchise wasn't even milked that much. Only 2 spin-offs on 3DS and 3 entries in the span of 4 years. With franchises aimed at kids you must be quick to capitalize the ephemeral success.

Can't say it bothers me to see third parties fumbling around and getting the sales that reflect that. If you abandon or don't cater to your audience and go looking for greener pastures only to return to the one you left - well don't expect a big welcome.

The Switch audience has basically been cultivated now on a Nintendo / Indie model and the traditional third parties are getting left behind. I'm more than happy to see sales going to smaller indies and Nintendos own output

I don't understand this comment. When did Level-5 abandon or not cater to their audience? When did they go looking for greener pastures?

Yo-kai Watch 4 was never anything other than a Switch title.

Level 5 sure milked this franchise dry in a single generation. 8 games in a single generation.

Reasons why YW4 underperformed:

- Switch promotion coming up
- Targets children who don't own a Switch yet (too expensive, and Switch sells to male young adults at this point)
- Tired franchise

Its sales will grown with the system. It's an evergreen. But there's a limit to how high it can go.

Yo-kai Watch 4 was never anything other than a Switch title.

They milked it, then shifted a lot of resources to mobile then came back too late. And it wasn't a comment specifically about level 5 / yokai anyway

Damn. 150k is such a disappointing result for YW4. 1m LTD seems out of the question now. It should have some legs by nature of the series so we could see 500k LTD, but that's a far cry from the peak of the franchise.

Never thought DQXIS could actually outsell YW4 but I think it's possible now.

Next week should be a lot better with the 3k yen Switch promotion and SMM2 release.

Never understood the milking argument when there is basically now a new mainline Pokemon about every year. Despite the criticism towards the gameplay of Pokemon the battle system has a great design and Gamefreak has reiterated well on it while the same can't be said about YW. The battle system wasn't great which is why people couldn't get attached to the formula. That being said scraping the previous battle system and going action while rebooting the monster count in YW wasn't a good move which is why nailing on the first entry is crucial.

The other thing is that Pokemon is more of a social phenomenon and puts a big focus on catching, trading, battling while YW is more of an isolated experience. The new battle system doesn't even looks like it works well for multiplayer.

The difference with that is that a new generation of Pokémon, a new iteration, is still every 3 to 4 years, not every year. Between that you get enhanced versions and remakes but they never do as well as new new

Yo-kai Watch 4 was never anything other than a Switch title.

They went whole hog into mobile development with 3 Yo-Kai mobile spin-offs released in 2018 alone. Since the Switch's launch, there's been 3 3DS releases, 7 mobile releases, and a PS4/PC release with Ni No Kuni 2 before Yo-Kai Watch 4. The only Switch output they've had before YW4 was an enhanced port of Snack World. They definitely could have at least ported more titles in 2018 to better cultivate their audience on the Switch.

Can we get an edit for this but instead of the 3DS it's a PS4 and the crying woman in a Switch? We can use it anytime a PS4 title sneaks into the top 10.

The thing is that during the 3DS they introduced new mega evolutions in ORAS that weren't available in XY and even new Pokemon with USUM not present in SM. 3DS is the handheld generation where your Pokemon game became the most outdated and missing on Pokemon in the fastest time frame.

I'd argue that the Galar Dex only in SwSh is to give people an incentive for people to buy and keep up with future games especially now that Megas aren't a thing.
