Yo-kai Watch 4 so irrelevant that makes Switch drop below 30.000 for first time since last year.

I am a bit sad to see one of the few franchises that still sold great numbers in the deflated Japanese console market dying so badly.

Yo-kai Watch 4 is a terrible result for the series. But let's hope it can have some good legs since anecdotal indications are that the reception is pretty good for the title.

Switch holding pretty well when you consider a version with a free 3k yen voucher launches tomorrow. That and SMM2 should push next week to large numbers.

When people were predicting YW4 to do as high as 1m, I was saying to be more cautious and that 500k would have been a more reasonable (and good) result. Indeed...

The result was to be expected as the IP has been collapsing for years. Also, Switch doesn't have as much YW fanbase as 3DS.

Neverthless, it is still one of the biggest debuts on Switch and if the game will have legs it might do respectable numbers. If Level-5 can keep sales around 500k that wouldn't be that bad. Sure, nowhere near the peak of the franchise but good enough numbers to stay alive.

Yokai did pretty well for the time period that it launch in.......if it came out in holiday time the numbers would be much better, it most likely will finish the summer time with at least 300k sales not a huge number but still good compare to other games in japan and I am just talking about physical sales it probably did 200k or close with digital

Previous entries were released in Summer too. Sure, under holidays it would have done a little bit better but may be having less legs... Hard to tell.

Wasn't there another Story of Seasons game released not long after the Popolocrois game? Whereas for Doraemon we haven't seen anything that indicates another SoS will be releasing soon.

Commenting on the (inevitable) main topic of this week's thread: yep, that YW4 debut is baaaad. Hopefully it can still display good legs, but even 500,000 copies sold at retail would be considered an incredily optimistic scenario.

Not too surprising Switch sales went down, since the deal is happening in the next few hours. I'm actually surprised they didn't fall that much.

I'm still wondering if the 3DS will join the 25m sellers club.

It isn't that far out, but there is also almost no gas in the tank left. If they get one last solid holiday out of it, it might just be able to do it - but then there's no games left to drive sales.

True but the kids market is inherently ephemeral.

Very few franchises could survive many years in the market while still being relevant. Pokémon is super-huge noawadays but let's not forget how much more widespread was at the beginning (the first generation sold 8m units... Lates entries around 4m) while now it is more concentrated around less people (indeed, target demo as shown by Nintendo itself, grown older and older across entries).

Most of the time the popularity eventually wears out. Level-5 must invest in new IPs all the time to keep succeeding as a business. I'm pretty they'll be able to. Layton, Inazuma, Yo-kai Watch: that's not luck but capability of reading market trends. Sure, they might be late or make some mistake but I'd bet on them again.

YW4s not too bad compared to other JRPGs. Probably have some legs to it as well.
