Are you basing that on the GEO chart above?

If so I'd note that last week they had Samurai Warriors above Mario Golf which was obviously not representative, and the Musou game are still 2&3 there(with the Switch SKU going up a rank) and those games are not particularly leggy AFAIK.
Exact same 2nd week drop as Samurai Warriors 4 would lead to 27.378 units on PS4/Switch combined, so GBG is likely higher than each SKU nationwide and they'd fight with Minecraft/Ring Fit.

Second week drop for Code Vein was 79%, Scarlet Nexus won't be far from there.

Since MH Stories 2 is out next week, this old post of mine is a little more topical now. I'm going to copy/paste it below.

hs1z9hs.png

On the subject of Capcom, I think it would be interesting to talk about the sales of Monster Hunter Stories 2. Capcom has historically had some success with the kids' market (largely with Mega Man Battle Network, back in the day), which we know they attempted to replicate with the first Monster Hunter Stories.

However, that didn't quite pan out. The game sold just 316,470 units at retail in Japan.

We know three things about Monster Hunter Stories, by virtue of its sales numbers and some educated guesses:

1. It didn't attract a large number of MH fans
2. It looked like a game aimed at children, but didn't attract a large number of children
3. It was a JRPG but also didn't attract a large number of JRPG fans

We know Capcom is attempting to address these issues with Stories 2 in various ways. One of the biggest changes is that the game's new character designs look older and a lot more like they would appeal to the typical JRPG audience. So here's a look at how the last few major JRPGs of note have sold on Switch in Japan:

AaGbcXt.png

I'd imagine that Capcom is looking at a lot of the same games to help forecast sales of MH Stories in Japan. Given the above figures, the strength of MH as a brand, and the Switch's ability to sell software, I think 450-500k in lifetime sales would be a reasonable estimate.

(I also think Capcom will want to push digital sales the way they have been, because that's one of their broader goals, even in Japan. So I could see digital accounting for 20-30% of sales.)

As an aside, I 100% feel this game is happening because Capcom sees overseas potential after MH World and the resurgence of the JRPG genre. I could see lifetime sales for MH Stories 2 roughly breaking down this way:

- 450,000 from Japan
- 600,000 from USA (400k on Switch; 200k on PC)
- 200,000 from Europe (100k on Switch; 100k on PC)
- 100,000 from Asia (40k on Switch; 60k on PC)

450-500k in Japan would mean MH Stories 2 ends up selling around 13-14% of MH Rise's sales (taking 3.5 million as a "safe" estimate for that game), which I feel is fairly reasonable. Part of the goal is to get more MH fans on board, after all. (For context, MH Stories sold around 8% of MH4's retail sales in Japan.)
This is really great, and I would add that I think the current retail + digital numbers for those JRPGs should give Capcom more confidence in over 450k in Japan.

My biggest question is about PC performance in Asia, which was a huge amount of the MHW and Iceborne sales. I think your predictions are reasonable, but that's the one area that I think could outperform expectations.

Gust will do an announcement on the July 6th(Should be already that is Japan right?). Wonder if we will receive any updates on Atelier Ryzen 2 sales, a new Atelier or info on Blue Reflection new title.

Given the teaser image they used it's likely Blue Reflection.

With Atelier it's hard to say because KT said they wanted to give the series a larger international push going forward and that could mean a longer wait. Ryza 2 was also released this year, so they would wait until ~Fall to announce the next game if it was launching in the first half of 2021.

Yeah, they are just finishing up the anime, I would place my bet on Blue Reflection too.

I kind of assume that's what the anime is for. It's also a magical girl series so, onboarding with each entry should be somewhat expected. Probably, if this one does well, they'll put out an enhanced remake of the first one in a year or so.

The anime runs for two cours, so we are only at the middle.

The anime doesn't follows the first game plot.

I assume many thought Monster Hunter Stories 1 would have done really as well because it has the Monster Hunter moniker, but in the end, it didn't do that great. I'm not saying SMTV will do better than Monster Hunter Stories 2, but at the same there is potential it could. Personally, the jump from SMTIV and SMTV seems bigger than Monster Hunter Stories 1 to 2. The reason why I'm optimistic and betting hard on SMTV is because of the huge jump. The game has 3D demons in the overworld, animations have given the demons more personality, areas are a lot more open-ended, the MC design catching the eyes of many, and etc.

Nintendo and Atlus doubling down on the November date for SMTV has me thinking they are positioning the game to be a big release with the holiday sales helping a lot. Lastly, the Switch having a strong core Jrpg audience will surely help the game sell well. All I'm saying is that I could see a scenario where SMTV could be more appealing than Monster Hunter Stories 2. Still, we have to wait and see considering that for SMTV to do really well it also needs good wom.

Now don't get me wrong while I pointed all the reasons, Monster Hunter Stories 2 still has a strong factor on its side and that being it will have an easier time appealing to the younger audience compared to a game like SMTV. Sure you may be right and MHS 2 does way better than SMTV, but I just want to bet on the side where the odds are low lol.

Edit: Also with the help of Persona growing I could also see that audience contributes to SMTV sales as well.

The thing with MHS1 is that it had more things working against it than for it. Just using the "Monster Hunter" brand/setting doesn't mean something is guaranteed to sell well. Said product also has to appeal to the right demographics. For example; Monster Hunter Diary did well because it targeted women that play Monster Hunter games, and the entire game was built around this goal. It was on the right platform at the time (PSP), had a suitably cute art style, was a farming-sim type game, and Felynes were popular with women as mascots go.

In contrast, MHS1 targeted kids, but Capcom didn't realize at the time that kids don't want a kiddified version of MH—they want the real deal, or something close to it. MHS2 is a better, more focused product in this regard. It targets JRPG fans and contains all the necessary features you would need to appeal to them (the visual style, the voice-acted dialogue, the promise of a grand adventure with lots of exploration etc. etc.).

And therein lies the biggest difference between MHS2 and SMT5: the potential audience for MHS2 is much larger. Its audience is Monster Hunter fans and JRPG fans. That's why there's an element of unpredictability to its sales. It could end up catching the attention of either of these audiences to a greater extent than one expects. In contrast, the potential audience for a game like SMT is much smaller, at least in Japan. SMT clearly targets an older audience, deals with mature themes, and doesn't have a lot of the usual concessions that your typical JRPG fan looks for. Yamai once called it the antithesis of JRPGs, and that's basically what it is.

Somewhere. I think.
Famitsu report for June is out. I... didn't expect Game Builder Garage to top Software sales, but it was a really slow month (GBG is the only one which sold +100k) so not all that surprising after all.

While the Dragon Quest anime never makes the Weekly Top 10 ranking from Video Research Ltd. (https://www.videor.co.jp/tvrating/), it does constantly come in at lower half of the Weekly Top 10 DVR ranking from TVGuide (https://www.tvguide.or.jp/tvranking_category/record_rankview/).

To put it in comparative terms, it is pulling lower ratings than the current Pokemon anime, but much higher ratings than the current Yokai Watch reboot anime.

The mobile gacha game for sure. The console game might be a jpn Holiday release if they wanna get maximum exposure while the anime still running, but Spring 2022 Global wouldnt surprise me either.

The rollout for this game has been a bit weird though, but thats DQ for you.

That's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks! It's not doing too bad then.

I don't think i've ever been more wrong about anything video game related as much as i was about Pokemon Go. Thought it would be huge for 3 months then die from the lack of a real combat system.

They're probably expecting this to bomb again to be honest. The anime series recently had its home release cancelled because they didn't get enough orders.

I find Blue Reflection personally quite interesting, but it feels like an IP about 10 years to late to the magical girls party. I'm surprised it's had so much investment recently.

Remember when everyone was convinced it'd be called something dumb like New Nintendo Switch? Switch OLED feels like they're downplaying the 4k capabilities...bc maybe they don't exist?

There are no 4k feature in this console. It's only 4500¥ increase, bigger better screen for a bit more - Nintendos standard playbook move.

It'll likely use a new SoC but yeah, this model won't be 4k. I expect maybe slight performance improvements but nothing substantial, unless Nintendo are really understating the power in the trailer.

I pretty much expected no 4K. Hopefully the handheld performance is much improved.

no sure if XL will turn out to be a good comparison. Can OG still be the leading model?

Release date, price increase and specs are all in line with logical expectations if you followed Nintendo history with revisions. It could replace the old model almost immediately, before the end of Fiscal Year.

I kinda dig it to be honest. Yeah no 4k sucks but the screen will be a massive improvement for me

I love these Nintendo reveals purely for entertainement sake, months and months of rumours, insiders coming out telling us it's the truth and will be revealed any day now, endless debates about it, dozens and dozens of people taking it for granted and then BAM everything was total horseshit and Nintendo just does what Nintendo always did.

To be fair when it came to DS and 3DS they did put out models with increased internal specs by this point in their lifetime.
