I was just expecting it to be posted if the sales if they fall below BD, that's all, I see from the replies to my previous posts what is meant and should be accounted for in comparing the sales between them now vs then, and I also think 200k LTD sounds low to me, even just for Japan, but I really have no grounding to base that upon, though my totally wild guess for a LTD would be closer to 400k than 200k, but perhaps that's way too high. The demo was very popular though, so even if it only sells 200k LTD in Japan, hopefully it reaches close to 10x that worldwide.

In Japan Octopath Traveler LTD should come close to Bravely Default, if not surpassing it. Word of mouth will determine that.

Worldwide it will have no problem to top its LTD already from initial shipment.

This has been my expectation for a while. It may not outsell BD in Japan, but worldwide figures should easily surpass that of BD due to the success of Switch hardware and software.

I'm thinking ~250k LTD for Japan depending on word of mouth.

I really hope SE can reach their personal goals with this game so we can see more of these kind of project in the future
They will eclipse their initial goals in the first week. This game was green lighted before the Switch was a proven success and the positive reception from the demo.

That division already has a couple more Switch games in the pipeline - Octopath already did its job. This game being a mio seller (lifetime) would have already been a success for SE - the potential seems even higher now on Switch and the unique kind of experience it offers.

Doubt it. They seemed specific in that they'd be making entries specifically for Switch.

Frontier was always that side game that never "replaced" actual entries. Wii U got Frontier and 3U, and Switch will likely get this, but it won't stop say Monster Hunter 5/Monster Hunter World Portable from happening on it.

3DS could've had Frontier if Capcom thought of streaming it which I'm surprised they never did after SE showed it was possible with Dragon Quest X. And the main games clearly weren't going to be on Vita and it was easy enough to bring Frontier to it so they did.

I hope so, still gonna buy GU in August, praying for a more meaty entry soon with qol (mh:wg ou p5th)

Many retailers are running summer promotions that started this week, sales should remain good again. Amazon joins next week.

going by how they're supporting this game, I feel they really should have just made a sequel instead

They perhaps never expected such an interest for the game.

It's pretty clear that, at a certain point, Nintendo (and their partners like Namco and Platinum) started to port every Wii U game to Switch. Some became new games, like Mario Tennis Aces, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Splatoon 2. Some others were kept as simple portings, like Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong Country. Some others became deluxe editions, like Pokkén, Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart.

Of course we'll likely see a sequel sooner or later because the game is going to be a 2m seller worldwide which is a pretty big result for a porting.

I feared that Captain Toad would have been overshadowed by everything going on next Friday but it might open higher than the WiiU version. Legs shouldn't be a problem so it might perform well for a port.

I do wonder if they'll take this opportunity to bring Frontier to Switch and Xbox One. Frontier's Wii U and Xbox 360 clients are ending service in August so it'd make some sense for each if they plan to continue Frontier much longer. Will there ever be a Frontier 2?

I also wonder how much longer PS3 and Vita clients will last. PS3 has already ended production, which was the reason for ending 360/Wii U support, and Vita is probably done after 2018.

Pokémon doesn't have a budget problem, I think the issue is more Game Freak insists on doing everything themselves. Similar issue as with PD and GT.

Budget and size of the studio are heavily correlated. A sizable chunk of a game's budget comes from paying the employees. Since GF are not big and are nearly releasing a game per year, the dev budget for their games is not "AAA".

However, their marketing budget totally is.

Apparently abunch of people on Era think that Pokemon has budget issues lol. https://www.resetera.com/threads/wh...al-is-held-back-the-most-by-its-budget.53900/

Like half the replies are Pokemon.
The real issue is manpower and ambition. Monster Hunter was in a very similar position, but then they actually sat down and did the work to take it to the next level. It doesn't look like it's happening with Pokémon. Maybe that fabled 2019 game will be it...

That's entirely a limitation of management though. Throwing more money at development won't solve any problems when GF doesn't want to rapidly expand or outsource.

Pokemon is designed in a way that appeals to 10-15 million players with every mainline entry, if someone thinks that "wrong" or "lazy" then that's their own mistake. It's very rare to see a franchise like Pokemon that stays as consistently successful as it has for decades.

Like half the replies are Pokemon.

I mean, the graphics and cutscenes of Pokemon are terrible.

The games have 7 hours of story and 0 seconds of voice acting and the cutscene direction is as basic and uninteresting as possible.

It could be that Game Freak just doesn't care at all instead of being resource limited, but the games come off as incredibly low budget.

People who look for graphics and scope in a Pokémon game don't understand what the franchise represents. The actual next-gen evolution of Pokémon was definitely Pokémon GO.

The real issue is manpower and ambition. Monster Hunter was in a very similar position, but then they actually sat down and did the work to take it to the next level. It doesn't look like it's happening with Pokémon. Maybe that fabled 2019 game will be it...

The necessity to give MH a facelift was grounded on the urgency to make the series more attractive to the western audience. Pokemon never had that problem. People everywhere love it for what it is.

That's entirely a limitation of management though. Throwing more money at development won't solve any problems when GF doesn't want to rapidly expand or outsource.

Yes exactly, growing too rapidly isn't a good option and is not in the habits of Japanese studios. They are currently expanding but they will always be conservative and that's one of the multiple reasons why the franchise is still a monster today.

People who look for graphics and scope in a Pokémon game don't understand what the franchise represents. The actual next-gen evolution of Pokémon was definitely Pokémon GO.

... Pokemon Go looks absurdly low budget and basically didn't work in its first two months and is based around one minigame.

Something can be successful and low budget (Pokemon Go definitely is!) or good and low budget (Pokemon Go definitely is not! It's extremely bad), but I don't think Pokemon Go is high budget or anything.

Also, this idea that "people don't know what Pokemon represents!"

...... The games have 7 hours of story content in them these days and Game Freak looks like they have never hired a writer or a director or voice actors before.

Game Freak clearly thinks the games are about massive amounts of story content but they put no money or resources into the story content.

Maybe the problem is that you do not understand how good a game like Pokémon Go has to stay.

See: Pokémon doesn't need to be "high budget" or have a "high-quality graphics" to have a place in today's market and evolve. Pokémon is about collecting and playing with other people. Pokémon GO, which is still one of the most successful games out there, had everything Pokémon had to be to evolve the franchise.

There are some franchises that don't benefit or don't necessarily need a high budget or a top-notch graphics. We should stop applying the same logic to every game. The most successful games at the moment are a remaster of a 5 year old game (GTAV), a game with 3D pixel graphics (Minecraft) and a game which is absolutely average in every technical aspect (Fortnite).

The game didn't work for the two months I tried to play it... It didn't come off as a All Hands on Deck level effort.

...also, it's factually wrong that the game wasn't working for months. The game had issues during the first few weeks but its performance had been improving since then. In September the game was playing totally fine.

Okay so

Pokemon Sun and Moon had 7 hours of story shit.

It was presented in the cheapest manner Game Freak could have possibly done. Every cutscene had the same setup, there was limited animation, there was no VA.

I'm pretty sure Game Freak being absurdly cheap held back people's enjoyment of Sun and Moon a good amount. Because kids and long-time players would have enjoyed story stuff that wasn't terrible.

So the time you should use is the past don't you think ?

The game lacked content at launch and had servers problems but remember that we are talking about hundreds of millions of downloads, that was 20x times higher that "their best case scenario", they were not prepared.

However, the game is now very robust and people are really enjoying it.

going by how they're supporting this game, I feel they really should have just made a sequel instead

why?

A remaster with content that should've came with the first dang game, is selling like crazy.
And then I expect a sequel in maybe 2-3 years.
From a purely business standpoint that they're pretty set.

And while Pokemon Go is the most successful Pokemon game ever made, Game Freak clearly doesn't view that as the future model of how the games should be based on their comments. Game Freak has suggested that Pokemon 2019 will have even more story content than Sun and Moon.

I personally don't think you should have an absurd amount of story and then do it as cheaply as possible. I don't think that is remotely business savvy or whatever term we want to give to Game Freak.

(Especially since Game Freak's writers are flat out bad).
