We know the last Splatfest of Splatoon 1 led into the story of Splatoon 2.
Splatfests and content updates are done, but they’re teasing a pretty big story event.
Do we really think Nintendo is going to tease the story of Splatoon 3 and then not release the game for 4 years?

The time between Splatoon 1 and 2 was just 2 years, don’t know how “just 3” seems so bizarre
Setting up the context of the next game doesn't imply having to release the next entry the following year. Splatoon 2 released only two years after the first game because Switch released in-between. Unless you believe Switch 2 is out next year, which would be another issue.

This era-exclusive idea of Splatoon 3 releasing soon makes absolutely no sense no matter how you slice it. We're talking about a game that keeps selling, keeps getting supported with significant content and of which the producer/director of the game is currently busy on another big game. Who exactly was supposed to work on this for a release next year ? Even better: when was the last time Nintendo released a sequel to a highly successful multiplayer IP on the same console, apart from Mario Party ?

I'd understand supporting the idea of a spinoff/another game set in the same universe but with a different gameplay releasing soon to further capitalize on the brand. Straight-up sequel ? Not happening.

Didn't know Switch 2 was releasing next year.
The final Splatfest story is playing straight into the game rolling into a sequel, and they are making a huge deal out of it. And there's no reason to wait for a whole new console for the next one, the only reason S1/S2 were on separate consoles was because the Wii U was replaced in the timeframe. Of course the Switch needing new games was a reason to fast track it as well, but if it was on the same timetable as last time S3 would be out in a couple of months.

Do you actually play Splatoon? The community as a whole is mostly thinking this. Who knows when the game comes, but 2020 is not unreasonable at all.

The last Splatfest of Splatoon 1 decided which would be the villain, which is a rather small change in the plot and modeling work.

The last Splatfest from Splatoon 2 will decide what the setting will be, which is a much more radical change.

Unless Nintendo has already made a Splatoon 3: Cyberpunk and a Splatoon 3: Mad Max that are stored in a drawer and erase the one that loses, it can not be in 2020.

Solution: Two versions.

How do you get 55% if it sold more?

Anyway the difference is probably because Famitsu doesn't include sales from SNK Online Shop (SNK's official online store).
Because company use shipped numbers almost 99.9999% of the time

Actual physical sell through to consumers is incredibly rare.

Hence the 55%

It’s also highly unlikely that the SNK store accounted for 14k sales

It might not be July/summer 2020, but I can’t imagine it’s way later like some are proposing with the series going on hiatus for 4 more years.

Support ends with Final Splatfest... which is setting up something story related.
Why end support there while teasing a major story event to not be answered till the next generation in 3-4 years?

Also:
when was the last time Nintendo released a sequel to a highly successful multiplayer IP on the same console, apart from Mario Party ?
Nintendo’s consoles generations and the way they do business have changed dramatically.
Can’t follow the same rules established when Nintendo changed the rules

I already discussed it here
As for the story, I don’t think the results of the final Splatfest will matter too much. They likely already have the idea in the works and wouldn’t let something as volatile as Splatfests ruin it.
Kind of like them knowing that Marie was more popular than Callie so they wouldn’t have had them switch places in case Callie came out on top due to wins. (Or they might rig it, dunno)

Maybe Splatoon 3 is just further away from release than Splatoon 2 was at the point of the final Splatfest of the previous game. :mindisblownemoji:

Nobody said anything about a hiatus. The game will still exist and sell big numbers like it's already doing. Imagining that Nintendo will go against everything they always did and release a sequel to a multiplayer game still selling next year is wild to me. Aside from the fact that the development team, including the producer, is already busy on another game. It's Splatoon, not Zelda.

What 'logic'?

They're ending updates for S2 now. The team turned around Splatoon 2 from S1 in two years, why can they not have another after three years?

I don't know when it will come out, but there is no 'logic' to be applied to say it will be several more years. History implies sooner rather than later. It may be later, but there is literally no evidence to 'prove' that right now.

What other posts? I've read them all, you have not outlined any of this 'logic'
The fan made rule of “one installment per console” apparently applying to Switch despite there not being a second console.

This means no new Splatoon for 4 years despite Splatoon 2 content ending in two weeks.

Logical

I have no idea when it will actually land or if there will be spinoffs or whatever. But the only ‘rules’ or ‘logic’ are what have come before, and that was a sequel after two years which picked up the results of the final Splatfest.

Other arguments can be made, but ‘what happened before 100% definitely can’t happen again’ is a poor one.

In that context it is seemingly referring to a new installment of each major franchise and not that each franchise only gets one. “Can we expect a new animal crossing and a new smash on switch?”
“We try to make a new installment for each of these major franchises per console”

Like, we’re getting a sequel to Breath of the Wild.

Interesting that would mean that sales remained flat. That’s prety impressive
They are shipments, not sell through.
_

Apparently Amazon had a big shipment of Mario Maker with stylus included.

Can download cards participate at Nintendo's voucher campaign?
Dengeki big discrepancy with Famitsu could be partially explained from that.

4 years real time sounds like a great time to have significantly different assets and make you go wtf

Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, NSMBU... all of these are multiplayer/social Nintendo games that had a "long" hiatus without a sequel on the same console. I'm not sure why people keep pushing the idea that there will be a new mainline Splatoon on the Switch. This isn't COD Pokemon.

They couldn’t get a sequel to New Leaf out quickly since 2012 but you think Splatoon 3 will come out in 2020, the same year of New Horizons?

From Thursday 27th June to Wednesday 3rd July (7 days):

physical shipment is 30.179
digital is 10.427
total is 40.606

Looks like Super Mario Maker 2 is going to be another one of those "great Western sales but only good (not great) Japanese sales".
Like?

Zelda?
Mario Kart?
Kirby?
Super Mario Party?
1-2 Switch?
Super Mario Odyssey?
Mario Tennis?
Pokemon?

Only ones that deviate a bit are titles with relatively great sales for the title/ip, but not in the absolute term, i.e. less than 3M worldwide)

So Xenoblade, Mario+Rabbids, maybe Yoshi and if you really want to push it DKC:TF

...btw MM2 sold 80k more than MM3DS without even counting digital which had the 2games voucher offer and the 3000¥voucher bundle pushing it together with a much bigger adoption rate for digital purchases for Switch compared to the 3DS’ (and WiiU) ecosystem.

Yeah, if 1-2m lifetime sales is "good but not great" then sales for Japan are in shambles because only a few games are capable of selling more than that.
