iiRC, wasn't the 2006 COD 3 Wii the only one that sold well (lots of people interested in the new motion gaming mechanics)? I'm pretty sure Activision was disappointed in the attachment rates of the successive COD's on the Wii...but maybe I'm wrong?

They didn't sell well on the Wii U, that's for sure. You can say userbase size was the problem, but COD sales on the launch XboxOne belies that argument.

I mean, maybe if the active userbase of the Switch hits 80-100 million, you could expect so sell over 1 million of a COD port...but it's certainly not a slam dunk to expect that now.

I don't believe a new COD, whose franchise model is pushing visuals and performance and big screen multiplayer online competitive gaming...can get a large enough audience to choose the 720p/6" screen version just for the lure of portability to make the effort of a parity port worth it.

I'm happy to be proven wrong though! Good luck Activision! :P

Again, I do think a unique offshoot CoD specific to the Switch system is their best chance of sales, though.

But straight ports of major multiplats that are very popular on Xboxes and PlayStations? No, those are risky endeavors. I completely understand why publishers unilaterally dismiss the idea of certain titles on Nintendo machines.

Hey, if Activision made a COD Battle Royals offshoot game for the Switch and made it a free download...I'm sure it would be downloaded a lot!

I was kinda talking about what Nintendo users are willing to pay money for on that platform :P

Any game that is successful on iPhones can certainly appeal to Switch owners...that I can agree with.

I'm talking about how hospitable a Nintendo platform is for a straight port of a $60 AAA multiplat game whose interested market base already has a pc and/or PlayStation and/or Xbox to play them.

So basically your perceived trends are based on confirmation bias. Counting the misses. Ignoring the hits.

Now goalposts moved again. Now it's strictly about "straight ports".

COD would sell great on Switch.
It's a causal friendly game.
Look at how many people play Fortnite on Switch now, I guarantee someone on your friends list is playing Fortnite right now. COD would be no different

Jokes on you I have no friends on my Switch. Check and mate.

In all seriousness though I agree. There's definitely a market for COD on the Switch. Hell even the 3DS one didn't sell all that horribly which is a much stranger fit.

Absolutely. Most of it comes down to marketing though. Octopath is doing great because it had good marketing., but I wouldn't say the Switch demographic is "casual" by any means, and the fact that it is eating up hardcore rpg's is further evidence of this, but games like COD, Fortnite, GTA and Skyrim would/are doing well on the platform because the games are so popular that there has been enough prexisting marketing that they now market themselves and have the benefit of being handheld iterations. It's totally different than games with middling popularity to begin with (like Wolf 2), seeing late ports on the Switch without the benefit of launch rollout advertisement. Expectations for this type of release should be tempered on any platform as it is more less sent to die.

So basically super popular AAA games are going to do extremely well on Switch, popular indie games are doing well on Switch, and properly marketed games are going to well on Switch. There is no mysterious formula so far and the hits have been fairly obvious.
just like in every single console.
Well yeah...

Maybe "every single popular console" would be more appropriate as in cases like the Wii U the situation was fairly hopeless.

But having saId that, it seems like a lot of publisher's are treating the Switch like some outlier platform with a userbase from Mars so the obviousness here has possibly not dawned on them yet.

yep.
and it seems like the nintendo-console users must always be proving that they are worth the investment from third parties.

Like: "oh we'll launch this 3 yo game and if it sells like 2 billions copies without marketing, maybe we'll consider Switch in the future".... "oh this 3yo port didn't sell 2 billions copies without marketing and being digital only? too bad nintendo fanbase doesn't appreciate this kind of game, we'll do some mini-game collection next time".

There never was a COD on 3DS, surprisingly enough, even though N-Space was available to make one (they'd only make 3DS Skylanders games until they closed down).

NA went from 1-2 months on Amazon of Octo shipping to suddenly stock of both regular an Wayfarer, so they're definitely pulling stock out of somewhere (or producing it rapidly).

Media Create says preorders for Octopath Traveler increased by 30-40% after demo became available at 17/6 so both retailers and Square Enix had indications word of mouth and sales would be good.

[NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥6.100) - 40%, Wii-3DS start
That's pretty big. Here's hoping it's not the next game that will run out of stock in its opening weekend.

Is the "wii-3ds start" a reference to the percentage sell-through or to the absolute number sell-through?

For reference, Wii and 3DS entries openings:

WII Taiko no Tatsujin Wii 114.610
WII Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Super Deluxe Edition 102.437
3DS Taiko no Tatsujin: Chibi Dragon to Fushigi na Orb 63.388
3DS Taiko no Tatsujin: Don to Katsu no Jikuu Daibouken 62.247
3DS Taiko no Tatsujin: Don Don! Mystery Adventure 40.946
WII Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Dodoon to 2 Daime! 29.439
WII Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Minna de Party 3-Yome! 26.855
WII Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Definitive Edition 25.343

Taiko set to join the growing ranks of switch evergreen titles. What's the next decent size release after that?

Decent-sized as comparable to a game like Taiko, I'd say Mario Party in October. There are smaller releases scattered throughout August-September: FighterZ, Layton, Okami, Mega Man X Collection, SaGa, The World Ends With You.

Taiko has overtaken Captain Toad on the E-Shop, so it should easily do more than 40k during its first week.

Taiko will not have problem to have legs given how virtually every successful Switch game has and the history of the franchise. It might top 400k units. For reference, the PS4 game did below 100k units.

He's saying that the past entries on Wii and 3DS have sold hundreds of thousands of copies each, therefore he isn't worried at all [about the 40% sell-through of the Switch version].

Both are digital light. Taiko doesn't have a drums bundle SKU this time so that everyone goes physical.

yeah true I just meant relatively speaking, they are both fairly casual titles though i'd consider Taiko to be the more casual of the 2 so that coupled with the lower price of Todd is what leads me to think the way I do

For a game like Taiko, it probably wont matter too much if it runs out of stock in the first week, seeing that its predicted to be a long term seller. But its better if it doesnt run out of stock of course :)

Did we see this latest comment from OT PR already?

Google Translate tells me that they are working on producing a big shipment, and that intermediate shipments will be few. Please consider buying digital if you want to.

Could a Japanophone confirm or correct this?

Next shipments for OT on Amazon is slated for August 6th.

Demand is still strong for the game since backorders are surpassing the offer. Basically the intermediate July 27th and July 28th shipments are already allocated to people that preordered on the site.

Hollow Knight at #12 with just three weeks of tracking is pretty good.
Overcooked 2 getting a physical release in Japan?

I don't understand a part of the discussion in this thread. Its like reading from a parallel universe.

As of now we know that every single third party game sold well on Switch some even very good. From Doom to Attack on Titan, from Skyrim to Resident Evil Revelations. And many Indies sell more on Switch than on every other platform and that is true independent from the games genre: Horror game, retro Jump&Run, shooter, strategy, etc. All seems to have a chance with the Switch audience.

The problem is obviously not that games like Resident Evil or CoD would not sell a lot on Switch.

One problem is that not every game could be ported to Switch. Buts thats only a insignificant problem. 90% of games could be ported anyway.

The main problem is that especially big publishers are slow to change plans or react to market changes. Most Indies are much much faster to change production plans, obviously.

Speed doesnt seem to be the problem, for western devs anyway. The issue is probably returns. As we seen with Ubisoft, Nintendo makes up such a small portion, the worth of porting games is really small, and Ubisoft was an optimal example thanks to Mario + Rabbids and Just Dance

Big publisher in the west react even more slowly to market changes.

The perecentage return for the investment for Mario+Rabbids was probably higher than on every other game Ubisoft invested in last year. If Ubisoft produced more Switch games the overall return would be higher anyway.
