We usually talk about Japanese domestic market decline and practices from certain companies that honestly don't make much sense and sometimes I got the feeling as if they wanted to boycott themselves, and this week we have a perfect example of it.

On the one hand, we have Konami that releases simultaneously on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 maintaining the high sales of 2016 and 2018 entries thanks to multi-platform strategy. On the other hand, we have Bandai Namco that once again decided to skip the hottest Japanese platform for a medium-sized game (being generous) that to make things even funnier was born and found success in a portable platform, and when it comes to the international market I seriously doubt Xbox One is a better fit. Well, the results are clear and for everybody to see, Sword Art Online reaches a new franchise low. Perhaps there will be a logical explanation for this but I am unable to figure it out.

Sword Art Online first week sales:
PSP Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment (2013) - 129.222
PSV Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (2014) - 136.736
PSV + PS3 Sword Art Online: Lost Song (2015) - 169.003
PSV + PS4 Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization (2016) - 140.509
PS4 Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (2018) - 81.219
PS4 Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris (2020) - 73.331

So Pro baseball did better on Switch despite launch day PS4 version being stronger. Surprising to me at least.

I really want to see what SAO looks like next week. Also the PS4 hardware is rough.

Last of Us Part II out of the top 10 after 4 weeks is both surprising but not unexpected. Amazing SW hardware week!

The current debut is very slightly under the 2018 performance, but 2020 could outleg the 2018 game thanks to the Switch version (which is expected to be leggier, going by the 2019 game as well as the general behaviour of software on the platform).

Don't you get the feeling that if Nintendo could somehow make 200k Ring Fit available at once in a week it would sell out?

A 3rd party release on the Switch that is releasing day and date with the other platform(s) is doing well? Who could have seen that happening?

To be fair, PES 2021 isn't coming to any system.

It's just an update to PES 2020

Really good Switch hardware numbers. This holiday is going to be a monster sales wise especially if the Super Mario Collection rumours are true.

The fact there is not a Pro Evolution Soccer game on Switch is head scratching to say the least. Especially as it only has a single competitor on the platform (a competitor who can't be bothered to make anything other than a last gen port and who just updated the players for the sequel to said low effort port yet still sell millions of copies on Switch).

This week provides a pretty good snapshot of what the Nintendo Defense Force have been saying for 3 years.

Release your game on multiple platforms simultaneously and be Jikkyou Baseball.
Or don't and be Sword Art Online.

Self-fulfilling prophecy, admitting you were wrong about the way and kind of support your are providing to a plattform seems to be the most hurtful thing for some of these publishers. So they just pretend like there is no other viable target plattform and keep it moving. They are gonna rather PSV/PS4 looking games exclusive on a 1m PS5 install base then considering 15m Switche systems for anything that looks like a non-family title xD

I said it last week already, but this is crashing much faster than I think anyone expected. The entire lead will be gone by the end of the summer.

Really good Switch hardware numbers. This holiday is going to be a monster sales wise especially if the Super Mario Collection rumours are true.

It's because Konami didn't want to invest further in the FOX Engine (including porting it to additional platforms). It's also why Vita never saw any WE games, despite that system being an early PR target for FE it never actually happened. 3DS got PES only so long as the old PSP engine was still supported.

With the move to UE there's a very real possibility Switch might get PES2022.

At this point the only companies still engaging in this seem to be divisions within the biggest four pubs (Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Capcom, Sega) mostly under the direction of specific execs, and ass-backwards Falcom.

Otherwise Switch has the sort of universal industry support Nintendo hasn't seen since probably the golden Famicom/Gameboy/SuFami days.
