do you guys think an all-switch Top 20 is possible??

if so, when? what games could fill the list?
In December we could see Pokémon (2x), Labo (2x), Smash, Yo-kai Watch 4, Splatoon 2, BOTW, SMO, MK8D, Kirby SA, Taiko Switch, Super Mario Party and Mario Tennis in the top 20. Potential games for top 20 spots are 1-2-Switch, DKTF, and some games I may be forgetting. Unless there will be more releases, I don't think Switch will fill up the whole of the top 20 this year (unless Pokémon has more than 2 SKUs, in which case all bets are off).

i don't mind them doing that, especially when it's in place of like Atlus USA which is a shitty localization studio

I don't think I've ever disagreed with a post more lol, on all counts (I.e. Saying Atlus are bad and NISA are good. It's like the complete opposite of my experience).

The first BD had stock issues too (less severe than Octopath) and sold 30k in 3rd week, it did 145k->39k->31k.

Demand seems to be still strong since the game charted #1 on Amazon yesterday when stock came back but digital has probably already took a part of those sales. Hopefully they'll manage to stock it during the week-end so we'll have the game up in next week MC thread.

Right, so in the BD example above, even with stock issues like OT, it couldn't increase its sales when the stock issues were resolved going by those numbers - so I'm not really holding on to much hope OT will be any different. Though maybe there's a better example of a game that ran out of stock, dropped to 20% of it's first week sales due to stock in week 2, then in week 3 rose like 300% when stock was resolved?

Mario Tennis comparison

The Switch HW this year is a basically a straight line, or a line with a slight progression upwards. It doesn't seem to be affected by virtually anything? What's the reason for this?

they're gonna run out of shit to localize now that other companies like Spike Chunsoft established their own western branches. NISA can't make much money when the games they put out from NIS are low-budget looking titles that have to fight among indie titles (I know NIS aint indie, but I dont think their low end games do much to separate themselves from the indie aesthetic).

hence why I think NIS should invest more into mid-budget games.

nis has been doing a bit of a spike chunsoft thing in that they acquire western titles for japanese release. they also have a focus on licensing out their characters and creating mobile games. not sure how strong that is for them in japan, but the console game business is just one of their focuses these days.

regarding disgaea 1 - they did a pretty poor job with the marketing. for a game that was supposed to be an anniversary title, they gave it the same treatment as basically anything, by having a magazine announce it and not letting their western branch go in with them on it (the nisa announcement happened a week later and carried a lot further). after that, i don't recall much in the way of interviews or trying to build the game up in any way. considering that disgaea 6 will probably be some big-huge game, i don't understand why they went this route either.

as for nisa, every year since 2015, it looked like they didn't have enough to do, and then suddenly they acquired about 20 projects. weird shit too that you wouldn't expect like culdcept, games with snk, assault spy, or killer7 on steam. they will likely be fine for a couple of years at least while nis develops disgaea 6 among their smaller art projects.

Ah, thanks a bunch. Interesting that former staff from MV, who seem to have developed most recent Digimon games, ended up on a Digimon (unless they've been working exclusively on Digimon since WC was created?).

There's two SKUs:

- 1 + 2 has both collections, but 2 is only available as DL code on Switch
- stand-alone releases of 1 (physical)

Thanks.

Anihawk, can't NiSA also go to look for some smaller company in Japan and help them localize their product too? I always feel that NiSA should try localizing Vestaria Saga there to please some hungry hungry FE fans before 3 house lol.

That won't happen lol. CoD and some title maybe Jikkyou on PS4 probably would make some of the spots taken by PS title.

they tried that with the touhou games to varying degrees of success. they worked with experience in the same way for a couple of years too. i don't think they have strong connections to the japanese indie market though.

I would bet we don't see Octopath ever approach 30k again (basically top 25k in a week). I think even though it's largely sold out, the demand for it in quantities needed to get close to 30k has passed.

Even if there was absolutely no stock issues - the drop off for the second week is typically quite large is it not? And third week and beyond would just keep decreasing - putting it below 20k naturally without stock issues. Unless any of the BDs sold 25k+ after their first two weeks, which I'm not sure of.

But it'll be interesting to see what happens. I wonder what some of the more dramatic examples of a game being sold out for a few weeks after release then getting restocked have obtained in increased sales. Has there been games that have gone like 150k > 15k > 20k > 75k or whatever before?

I think DB Xenoverse 2 on Switch did this.

The only PS4 game that was not a new release was EDF5. No CoD (despite it selling very well, it was #30) or other mainstream games.

So, if there are no new release on Christmas, Switch miight have a small chance but I am more confident for it to happen on Dengeki.

Any new hints maybe Anihawk? :P

The only PS4 game that was not a new release was EDF5. No CoD (despite it selling very well, it was #30) or other mainstream games.

So, if there are no new release on Christmas, Switch miight have a small chance but I am more confident for it to happen on Dengeki.
What if dqb2 is around that time

Yeah because NISA is the epitome of quality localisation.

I don't think I've ever disagreed with a post more lol, on all counts (I.e. Saying Atlus are bad and NISA are good. It's like the complete opposite of my experience).

I take NISA doing the localization of Caligula Overdose on PS4, Steam & Switch with physical + collector releases for both consoles over Atlus USA not even being able to release the original Caligula game on Vita outside of a digital-only release, while "considering" a Limited Run Games release (that never happened).

I don't see what's so interesting or fun about an all Switch Top 20. It's always good to see some PS4 games do good, and I sure hope there will be some this holiday.

I disagree simply because you call them a shitty localisation studio which implies their quality of their localisation to me. Not their physical (or lack thereof) releases.

I meant to say their ability to localize a game in general, as in releasing in time, with physical release and on multiple platforms, not just the translation.

nis has been doing a bit of a spike chunsoft thing in that they acquire western titles for japanese release. they also have a focus on licensing out their characters and creating mobile games. not sure how strong that is for them in japan, but the console game business is just one of their focuses these days.

regarding disgaea 1 - they did a pretty poor job with the marketing. for a game that was supposed to be an anniversary title, they gave it the same treatment as basically anything, by having a magazine announce it and not letting their western branch go in with them on it (the nisa announcement happened a week later and carried a lot further). after that, i don't recall much in the way of interviews or trying to build the game up in any way. considering that disgaea 6 will probably be some big-huge game, i don't understand why they went this route either.

as for nisa, every year since 2015, it looked like they didn't have enough to do, and then suddenly they acquired about 20 projects. weird shit too that you wouldn't expect like culdcept, games with snk, assault spy, or killer7 on steam. they will likely be fine for a couple of years at least while nis develops disgaea 6 among their smaller art projects.
I looked up NIS' earnings release from May (so over Q1 2018) and they had a big increase in revenue and profit compared to Q1 2017. However, they didn't give a sales split: no mobile vs console, no Japan vs west, no self-developed vs published. But they only have one big mobile thing as far as I know and that's Makai Wars - although they are still working on a Yomawari mobile game/port. To say their self-developed console business is just one of many things doesn't sound right to me; it looks like their console business is a much bigger investment, so it should also give significantly more returns.

As for NIS America, if they "didn't have enough to do", why did they let it come so far that they still were too tight on localisation and QA schedules? The brand got quite a lot of damage in the last couple of years. Sounds unnecessary to me. Things like the Ys 8 PC debacle probably cost them more sales than it would've cost them to make sure the thing was clean and ready on first try, or am I wrong?

It would be more telling than funny. This kind of "record" is speaking volume of the strenght of Switch software yes but also the weakness of the competitors.

Having the Japanese dedicated market that dependant of a single company is not a good thing at all but it is where the market is headed. The golden era of last gen is over yes but at least the market is in a better position than a couple of years ago.

COD is also releasing extra early this year, and in general there is little releasing in November, so the odds of old PS4 entries showing up are relatively small. DQB2 could be one of those titles, since it's still slated for fall afaik.

When a version of the PlayStation comes out that can show growth in the region people will get more interested.

So far even with Monster IPs behind it, the platform is barely tracking to the same level of the PS3 which was a showcase for declines that occurred during its time on the market.

unlikely... but DQXI and Dark Souls remaster (if both release in December) could take 2 spots in that Top 20 list.

they tried that with the touhou games to varying degrees of success. they worked with experience in the same way for a couple of years too. i don't think they have strong connections to the japanese indie market though.

Interesting info. I always feel that NISA should see what Circle Entertaintment did and copy their formula there. Portinf some smaller devs title+ indies is not a bad idea to allow NiSA to keep being busy and getting more profit from those small releases.

Because it'd be the first time it has happened and as observers we can't do more than muse about it.

A better market where a variety of games sell well and chart is always better for everyone and I hope this holiday is better than last year, but until then it's just interesting to see if the town is painted red.

they're gonna run out of shit to localize now that other companies like Spike Chunsoft established their own western branches. NISA can't make much money when the games they put out from NIS are low-budget looking titles that have to fight among indie titles (I know NIS aint indie, but I dont think their low end games do much to separate themselves from the indie aesthetic).

hence why I think NIS should invest more into mid-budget games.
Technically they aren't, say what you want about the NA branch. Quality wise, they are shite, but you can't deny that they will aggressively approach new companies and even japanese indies if opportunities come, localize them and even porting the games themselves to other platforms if possible.

And about NIS, what they need now actually isn't investing into other mid tier IPs, but rather a successful mobile game or two. A successful mobile game will guarantee them directly profits while granding them more budgets into other projects

It's not interesting, because it's just a consequence of known very weak 1st party output for the Japanese tastes, especially in the second half of 2018. The old solution to have deals for some key 3rd party games isn't enough, because development times increased too much compared to past generations, which means longer gaps, and many staple series saw declines.
