Wow - the way you have presented those figures is incredible. Putting Q1 numbers in against full year hardware / software goals (without pointing that out) just to mislead and make your point seem better :/

They've sold about 10% of their hardware target for 3DS in Q1 - they sold about 10% of their hardware target for Switch Q1 - and changed nothing in regard to full year forecasts. So presumably its near enough in line with their targets.

Now software sales are slowing quicker and the target is looking a few million off but try to present your figures in an unbiased way please!

1. There aren't any quarter goals, but only a fiscal year goal. It was obvious that this number was referring to full year target.

2. Switch numbers are also low in my opinion, I pointed that before in this thread, but at least Switch has games to drive sales in Q3. So, it has higher chances to meet the target.

3. Meanwhile, 3DS has only Luigi's Mansion remaster for these holidays.

4. We stil don't know if Nintendo will revise down these targets the following meetings. They usually do it after Christmas, when it's obvious they won't meet it.

I'm aware at the lack of software the 3DS has coming up (as are Nintendo) and hence I'd fully expect to see something like a $99 2DS XL with a bundled game like MK7 for example during the major sales periods. If advertised well enough it will have no problem shifting 2-3 million with that kind of pricing in the US and EU. 4 million is not impossible if they are aggressive enough on pricing and they have no reason not to be - they know this is its last decent year and will want to shift inventory.

No way they meet the software number but I think hardware has a chance especially as its still performing pretty well in the US (with the drivers this year during holiday being low pricing and bundling as oppose to software such as pokemon)

A Smash Ultimate direct was just announced earlier this hour. Any chance it could impact sales?

I don't think Square is so incompetent. Obon is important period for software sales, they still have some days to fix things.

A good shipment would be around 30k or so?

The game is still holding out well in used price which is a positive, I'm just curious how much longer it can get buy before the used market starts to have a significant impact.

Splatoon got 2 Spattest before release, I would expect Smash to follow suit (one in the coming weeks and another one closer to release).

An impact on preorders and hardware sales is a reasonable guess.

Sorry if this is not the place, but what is celebrated in the Obon holiday?

Obon is an event for commemorating the ancestors' spirits. It's like the japanese version of Halloween.

Obon takes place between 13-16th of August this year. But since the 11th is also a national holiday, some people take the 17th as a bank holiday. Counting weekends, that makes 9 days off from the 11th to the 19th (However this depends on each company holiday policy).

It's not an event focused on sales, but it's well known that when there is a holiday (no matter the reason), japanese go shopping, that's why sales increase.

Restock for Octopath Traveler seems indeed low this week.
If there is an increase it won't be big.

Singapore
is not about making the unit but distribution, regular distribution channels take about 2-3 weeks for stock to get to the stores. at best
I don't think that's entirely true? We see really quick restock of large quantities for big titles all the time because they have the stock on hand. In fact, even for niche games which are undershipped, we never hear about restocking problems for disc based games ever. The only times these things happen is with carts. So my conclusion is that it is a production problem. It's not unique to Square Enix. Atlus faced this same problem with the first Etrian Odyssey, and Sega with Infinite Space. Same case as Octopath here. Stock was sold out in the first week, restocking took a long time, small quantities trickled into retail, prices of copies went up, resale value was really high.

thats part of the cycle, is not like they expect for stock to hit zero before shipping new. but this being SE likely even if they new the pre-order stock was running out, they likely chickened out in fear of over supplying

So you think that producing more carts at short notice is not a problem at all, and that Square Enix could have easily done it if they wanted to but chose not to even after the game released and demand was high? Okay. Lol.

Media Create pointed rise on pre-orders of Octopath Traveler when the demo was released in mid-june, as Chris said some threads ago.
Square had hints that the there was some buzz and the word of mouth would be probably good since then, at least. I think it's time enough to be prepared.

Despite all these hints, the game is facing stock problems since day one.

You're answering the wrong question. This isn't about "should Square Enix have produced more carts" but given that they did not, is it an easy thing to do to produce more carts to meet week to week demand right now.

my interpretation is that they are willfully leaving money on the table in order to avoid any risk of overshipping.

They are being a bit irrational though, they seem to not want a single copy sitting in stores and I think that's related to cart production.

Like, I'd asume having 5k~10k copies of a switch game going to bomba bins is much worse than that happening with a game on a PS4 disc.

They are likely fine referring interested customers to the eShop and hoping that more players get used to buy stuff digitally. Higher margins and less risks for publishers.

Maybe, but I can count Switch bomba bin games with the fingers of one single hand.

I can imagine something like this happening:

1) The game is finished and Square is cautious and plans a initial production of 500K 1 month ahead of release, releases a demo.
2) A few weeks prior to release, it is obvious that the game will sell more, and that more shipment is needed
3) Either they pay more for a emergency shipment (which also could mean airlifting the product to its destination), or they just wait longer for a normal production run. Because of margins, they decide to wait and promote the digital channel.

We don't really know the exact reason for these shipment delays and the most logical reason is a cart production capacity issue. If these were discs, the production would be faster and also better distributed throughout the world. I believe (and I am not sure about this) Nintendo is a limiting factor here because they control the cart production and don't have a lot of factories producing them.

yes, and that's another hint that publishers are avoiding overshipping switch games like their lives depend on that.

my takeaway: there's something about cart production that we don't know about that somehow complicate matters

Yeah, that's why I was thinking when the MC report came out. Launch shortages were probably inevitable, but they should've seen it coming for the weeks that followed.

So it got one Testfire ( 4 months before launch, just saying) and one pre-launch Splatfest ?

Yup, there were two pre-launch events: regular testfire like Splatoon 1 got, and the Splatfest. There was actually a separate demo for each.

Publishers? Retailers decide for the size of initial shipments and that has nothing to do with cart production.

Etrian Odyssey X had won first place. It is the first time in 33 weeks since the ranking announced on 18 December 2017 that a 3DS game gains first place.

While many influential new games were released, 3DS Etrian Odyssey X was supported by strong fanbase and came 1st. As a result of being on 3DS we estimated sales forecast to be lesser but the results were significantly higher than expected. Likewise, 3DS WarioWare Gold ranked 3rd and is also in a situation of giving a good fight for releasing not on Switch but 3DS. Switch Pro Baseball Famista Evolution ranked 2nd and Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! 4th. For these two titles legs are expected. In addition, Saga: Scarlet Grace - Scarlet Ambition, that released on PS4 and Switch, have both high sell-through.
