Games can and are being announced outside of Directs. In fact, it's been a long while since the last eventful Direct. I get it that Switch doesn't need any saving, but something like the 3DS Fall Conference 2011 would bring back some excitement to the Nintendo universe.

Too bad for you.
3DS launch window was pretty dire but the price drop followed quickly by the September reveals was pretty exciting.
Things aren't too bad for Switch but I do hope Nintendo isn't going to wait till like January to reveal 2019 plans

It takes me a little longer from what I estimated but Media Create White Paper for 2017 will be translated and posted sometime before next weekend. 90% of the work is done.

Top 1000 new + top 500 used.

I assume the September direct will announce 2 Q1 1st party property games.
and maybe a port or two. Though I think we already know some

Unless Q1 is fairly empty like 2018 again of course....

edit:
what unannounced games could conceivably hit a Q1 date though
The big ? is obviously FE. I personally feel it won't be March and will more like May.
Yoshi would be nice but knows what's wrong with that game. Then NSMBU is possible.
then there's stuff like Pikmin and Animal Crossing

now as I type it out, my hopes for Q1 being good are decreasing a bit.
A remaster seems likely.

FE is dated for spring so Q1 is out of the question.

I want to say Next Level's game, but the lead time for that would be really short

Octopath has lost its chance I think. Even if a restock did come in, most of those who were looking for it have purchased it digitally, second hand, or given up altogether. Unbelievable incompetence by SE- I'm almost tempted to argue that they didn't want OT to become a massive hit, because it would force their hand to providing lots more Switch support where they'd rather develop more flashy, over-developed HD titles.

it could be March.
I just don't think it will be.

I was going to add Next Level, but I'm like 60% they're doing some luigi's mansion. So it wouldn't release that close to LM 3DS.
If it's not luigi's mansion, then yeah. But like you said that lead in would be tiny.

Edigar need some TTYD HD and the last story in that port list. (I wish).
I doubt pikmin port will come since I think a new pikmin should be 2019. At least you'd hope so.

I want a Xenoblade X port. feels like 2019 is the only possible time for it to happen.

I dont think Nintendo were planing on items to rot on the shelves, but rather expecting or hoping that it would a long term and steady seller.

Hey, whenever I go into any store I generally see products sitting and "rotting" on shelves!

But yea, I think Labo already is a steady, long term seller. Selling 1.5 million $70-$80 enthusiast toys in just 3 months in the dead of spring/summer...I dunno, I think that's pretty good already. Especially considering the 20 million userbase size

Hopefully people will stop being so concerned about Labo sales after the holiday.

As Chris pointed Kirby was also spring and came in March. And DQBuilders port was spring as well and it came even earlier.

If the game misses Q1, it will be for other reasons, not because it was dated as Spring.

In my opinion, Nintendo will try to release this fiscal year to meet numbers, or at least I think that was the original target. FE moves a considerable amount nowadays.

Of course it could be dalayed if they need it.

You mean that they wouldn't want a game with a relatively limited budget to sell gangbusters because then, they would feel addicted to such profitable investment, and instead they would rather spend their millions on higher profile games that don't necessarily bring as much money in the end?

I have the impression Jan-Mar will be stuffed enough so that Fire Emblem goes for a Golden Week release but if Nintendo eventually needs it for hitting Fiscal Year targets it will move to March.

Exactly. What a stupid argument to suggest Square Enix don't want to make Switch games.

It's just incompetence by them. It's not a bad thing that they underestimated demand (they have every right to have been cautious about its' sales), but the continued shortages (if its' their fault) are what is the issue here.

I don't know what it was, but their incompetence and mishandling of the title was almost ridiculous to the point someone could tell me it was done intentionally and I wouldn't bat an eye (and yes I know it wasn't). I legit don't understand what they were thinking

What if their intention was to throw something on the Switch to fulfill some contractual duties and makes it extremely difficult to find just to justify a slow / barely inexistent support and people STFU about it, but it's backfired and now it's clearly showing how incompetent S-E is when it comes to new and exciting projects that aren't on X or Y platform???

Nothing has concrete dates for 2019 outside of like TSA:NMH.
I think FE and Daemon x Machina are the only candidates. They usually have a game per month planned out so we'll probably get some remaster announced along with some ports. Maybe NSMBU is Q1

Nindies dropped Aug 28 this year, vs Aug 30 last year. There was a general direct on Sept 13 last year where they dropped Doom / Wolf 2 news, pretty big surprise. And exactly 2 weeks out from the Nindies one to the day.

I assume a full direct is 2 weeks out this year, so around Sept 11th , is perfect to announce final details of their online service. The timing is perfect.

Just wouldn't get my hopes up. If there are surprises, then great. But the fandom's questionable ability to remain rational during the direct hype cycles is always a huge black mark on the community especially with the post direct meltdowns from fake leaks and such.No one really likes to deal with that shit.

Nindies are and NoA thing. As far as Japan is concerned, Nintendo has been silent.

Tbf, i don't think 1.5 units are sold, but maybe 2/3 of that but i agree that for a niche product like that, it's a not bad result, even if i hoped for more (but as i said before it might be as planned, we will see soon)

But i wonder, did Labo robot in Japan hit bomba bin? If not isn't it strange? (May sellers have been briefed on the estimated/wished selling curve of the product or something like that?)
Genuinely asking, have really no Idea how it works

Fire Emblem looked too rough for a Nintendo game, I don't see it releasing in Q1, unless they rush it like they did with Xenoblade 2.

And historically, Nintendo doesn't give two fucks about Q1. The closest case against that would be Brawl, Kart and Fit in the first half of 2008. (coincidentally Wii's best selling year in NA, take notes, Nintendo)

Oh I'm sure they sold over 1 million world wide already. Since that announcement of shipping 1.39 million by the end of July, GameStop has already had to restock twice (variety kit)

People saying that stores are still sitting on their initial April 20 over shipment stock is a bit of a troll... :P they are pretty much selling what has been shipped it seems.

As for Japan, I know that had a 40% off sale on all Labo kits a couple of weeks ago...but no real price cuts. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo had pretty much stopped shipping the Robot version to japan though

March 2012 - Kid Ikarus
March 2013 - Luigi's Mansion 2
March 2014 - Mario Party Island Tour (In Japan)
March 2015 - Mario Party 10
March 2016 - Pokken, Zelda Twilight Princess
March 2017 - Zelda Breath of the Wild, 1-2-Switch
March 2018 - Kirby Star Allies

There will be one game in March 2019. The question is if it will be Fire Emblem or another one.

Personally I think the March game comes down to Fire Emblem, Daemon x Machina or Yoshi.

Unless they reveal something else that seems more likely for the time frame (I could see a Mario Maker sequel or Metroid Prime Trilogy having a short reveal to release period).

Wild of the World?

In all seriousness, it might Deamon X Machina. I think the devs said early 2019

DXM being early 2019 has been inferred from Reggie saying "games we show at e3 are games coming in the next 6-9 months." That's the only thing that suggests it's early 2019 IIRC.

DXM has been in development for 14 months...

Nintendo seems to like re-releases in Q1 (Majora's Mask 3D, Twilight Princess HD, Bayonetta 2), so I think it's not unreasonable to expect another port in that time period. Barring that, Yoshi seems likely to me.

Aside from Nintendo's first-party releases in Q1 2019, third-parties traditionally have a strong season in February/March in Japan. In 2013-2017, they were all PS exclusive, because the Wii U wasn't a viable platform. However, we see more and more PS4/PSV series go the PS4/NSW route. Take Digimon Survive for example (which is also a 2019 release btw). Obviously first-party games will take the lion's share of the sales, but if big third-party series come to Switch as well (especially the typical shonen series), they will definitely add to the busy/stuffed feeling of the release line-up.

Here's an overview of the sizable Q1 third-party releases by Japanese developers on PlayStation of the last couple of years:

While the Switch can't expect all of the PS support to come over, I think a lot of licensed content, like Super Robot Taisen, Sword Art Online, Gundam, Digimon, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, etc, has a good chance of coming over. Koei Tecmo almost always releases one or more new Musou game in Q1; 2015 and 2016 had new Digimon games (and 2017 had a PS4 port), so I wouldn't be surprised if Survive is a March game; there's a new Super Robot Taisen game every year; a lot of anime licenses show up every year again - those were on 3DS in 2015/2016 and went UE4 in 2018.

Somewhere. I think.
Famitsu report for August.

https://www.famitsu.com/news/201809/03163387.html

***

March 2012 - Kid Ikarus
March 2013 - Luigi's Mansion 2
March 2014 - Mario Party Island Tour (In Japan)
March 2015 - Mario Party 10
March 2016 - Pokken, Zelda Twilight Princess
March 2017 - Zelda Breath of the Wild, 1-2-Switch
March 2018 - Kirby Star Allies

There will be one game in March 2019. The question is if it will be Fire Emblem or another one.

Surprised that after making that list, you still thought Fire Emblem was a likely candidate. All those are either family-focused titles (Mario Party, Kirby), or appeal to general public. Not sure Fire Emblem really fits the bill, imo. Still think April to June is the most likely release window for it.

Yoshi in March, on the other hand, I can see that happening. Not to mention Fire Emblem really doesn't seem like the kind of game you could rush out. Then again, publishers (especially Japanese ones) are pretty liberal with their use of seasons when it comes to release periods, so I can't say March is downright impossible.

While FE is less family-friendly, Awakening/Fates have performed similarly to Mario Party 10 and Kirby 3DS titles sales-wise (roughly 2 million range). I think it could fit the "core gamer" bill that BoTW fit in March 2017, and the IP has more overall appeal these days from to the mobile app I feel. If they plan to incorporate some sort of multiplayer components, maybe similar to the system FE: Heroes has, I could definitely see a big draw for it to be a March title.

TGS is at 20 September. There is a 2 weeks window for direct, this Wednesday or next Wednesday.

There are some Japanese announcements being held back and Luigi's Mansion means 3DS will have presence too even if it's only for known games.

Can you tell what exactly?

There was a sizable number of people, both on here and Reddit, that expected a Direct in February, within 20 days of the Mini Direct. That didn't happen.

I think there was some rumour about February Direct and some people believe in that, but other than that, expecting February Direct after January Direct was not reasonable, while September Direct is totally expected because we didn't had regular direct from E3 and last year we also had Direct in September and at end of August we had Nindies like this year.

I could see Yoshi, Fire Emblem and some Wii U port for Q1, also depending if Nintendo need stronger game to push Switch sales to meat forecaste, they could push some bigger title in Q1 also or move Fire Emblem if they dont need.
