Capcom had totally dumped PSP in western markets by the time MHP3 would've come up for localization. Their last release of the platform was in mid 2009 roughly 2 years earlier.

Actually most large pubs had dropped PSP in the west by then. Only Square Enix and Bandai Namco held on a little longer and they were done by mid 2011 too. PSP had good overseas hardware sales but software sales were disastrous.
If I remember right its tie ratio was about the same as GameBoy and GameBoy Advance had so pretty normal for handheld. I mean even in Japan PSP sold barely more software than PS3 with almost twice the installbase (going by gamedatalibrary).

PSP two best years for software were its first two full FY which is highly unsual for a platform.

Shows how much piracy impacted its software sales.

PSP (4.33) tie ratio was slightly above GB (4.22) but still a bit below GBA (4.63). It sold notably less software overall than both though and the ratio was much worse in western markets. Piracy really did decimate it in America specifically and this weak end cycle did Vita no favors with publishers (Capcom also abandoned that platform within a year overseas).

That is true too though that might also be because publishers simply expected more from PSP in terms of sw sales (considering how PS1 and PS2 were sw juggernauts) and not just because of piracy. Also that was period when western third party pubs started to focus on fewer big home console AAA which meant less smaller games and so less handheld games. The amount of games EA for example published declined a lot from PS2 era to HD twins/Wii era. It's not like PS1 or PS2 didn't have rampant piracy either.

EA still published tons of software in gen 7, very comparable to gen 6. Gen 8 is really when output declined and consolidated, with a lot of massmarket and licensed software efforts moving to mobile instead. That hurt 3DS and Vita upfront especially too.

Piracy was also hurting DS in western markets in the late 00s / early 10s too, not just PSP was impacted. Big pubs backed out on that system prematurely in NA/PAL too somewhat and we missed out on a lot of localizations we probably would've gotten otherwise.

Both Capcom and Nintendo would be very happy to localize and distribute a mh switch game

But wasn't most of those EA games like early in that generation? (which corresponds with ever lowering PSP sw sales after the first few years as third party support from west started to dry up). By something like late 00' to early 10s output from big pubs had already declined in amount of games. Also while I might agree that PSP was hurt from piracy more than most consoles I just don't accept it as a sole reason when discussing sw sales on PSP as PSPs tie ratio when it comes to handhelds apart from DS is not that different.

You're getting too hung up on global tie ratio. DS was also hurt by piracy (R4 cards) to the point where pubs were also backing out on the platform in some markets yet it had the highest tie ratio in handheld history (6.16) and significantly above PSP. 3DS arguably got weaker western 3rd party support and it also had a higher tie ratio (5.06).

EA's output didn't change dramatically downward YOY until 2013/2014 really. That was when they backed out of 3DS/Vita/Wii U and sunsetted PS3/360 for the most the most part.

I hate talking about MH but something I've been thinking about is what exactly would have to be the scope of a "moneyhat" to Capcom for Sony to keep MH off Switch? MHWorld was a huge runaway hit so it makes sense for Capcom to forge ahead with that series, but even so it's hard to fathom them not releasing a (non-3DS port) MH game on Switch given the fact its Japanese sales are bound to be outrageously strong. Globally it won't match MHW but that's besides the point, right? It's about making money, and MH Switch will make them a lot of it.

Even assuming the rumours about MH Switch are true, do we assume that Sony paid Capcom to keep MH off Switch for a few years at least? What exactly would Sony have to offer Capcom to make them agree to this deal? Considering how much revenue is at stake, is it even worthwhile for Sony to do that? Just curious where people stand on this as to the financial logistics of not having an original MH Switch game for at least 4 years of its life, maybe longer.

Capcom skipping 4 and going to 4 Ultimate is another example. I remember it was a bit touch and go with Generations Ultimate as well. Today's Capcom is all about simultaneous worldwide launches but I still think Monster Hunter is a bit of a wild card.

Monster Hunter wasn't the biggest Japanese 3rd party IP in the West back then.

"This week's #1 was Marvel's Avengers. it is a completely new original story of the movie Avengers. GEO also sells a limited edition with a steel book, using the Avengers superb design.

In addition, NBA 2K21, which is a new NBA-approved basketball game, ranked in 4th place. It has become a hot game in the field of esports, and can be expected to be sold over a long period."

Seems like all debuts from last week had huge drops, except maybe Jump Force.

Ring Fit will get that first position in the overall chart at the end. ;)

I forgot about Avengers. Do you think that game is leading by few units at GEO and Tsutaya? If so, I can see RingFit being the #1 game last week.

Tsutaya and GEO tend to overrepresent new releases vs evergreens.
Also, I think Tsutaya gets smaller Ring Fit shipments than other shops.

Are you sure Nintendo Europe won't send another shipment for 3D All Stars sells its inital shipment? All the info I've seen is that 200k number is the initial shipmen.

Yeah I was gonna say, this isn't a one time print. I'm sure it's only limited in the sense that it's only a 6 month thing. They'll be selling this all the way through the holidays as well. They'll get more out there.

Does anyone have any idea of how much Nintendo makes for each switch sold?

I know they probably don't lose money since Nintendo usually profits from their console sales. But having an idea of how big is this profit would give us a glimpse of their possibilities regarding a future price cut, if ever they think they need to (something that obviously seem nuts for now)

I'm sure there was something said before that it costs $257 to produce an OG switch. Not sure if that's changed since they new model though.

The fact that MHW is also available on Xbox One and PC is telling me that Sony didn't offer a lot to match the potential lost sales for Xbox One and PC SKUs, and on PC the game had one of the biggest launches ever on Steam and overperformed massively compared to expectations, despite being a late port. Unless Sony is willing to spend several millions to secure MH for the next few years as an exclusive title i don't see Capcom ever making a MH game exclusive to Sony consoles ONLY.

Nintendo most likely has some sort of involvement with MH on Switch, publishing in the west and localization are a given coming from Nintendo and most likely a ww release like they are doing for SMT V.

Yeah, I know. My point is we don't know the size of the lead of Avengers at those two stores, right? If we want to give some value to COMG for lowish sales, that chain also tends to benefit new releases, and over there Avengers has charted lower than RingFit. So I guess they shouldn't be far apart elsewhere.

I need a source for that (and not the video where Phil said he met the team at Capcom), because i can't see a scenario where Sony and Capcom had a deal for MHW exclusively on PS4, Phil visited Capcom and convinced them to make an Xbox One version as well, and what about PC?

Somewhere. I think.
I think BotW1 will sell more than the sequel. But I'll tell you that in Japan, Mario Galaxy 2 outsold 1.

Depending on how Nintendo play their cards, BOTW1 may not only keep on selling after BOTW2 comes out, but BOTW2 may even end up boosting its sales.

Of course, we'll first need to know what BOTW2 is like before we can say how it will sell.

These estimates for French Switch shipments have been proved unreliable many times in the past.

Unless it's not the same data that I remember, those shipment data numbers are not exactly shipments per se, but the total amount of units available for retailers to order for Day 1. How much is shipped Day 1 depends on what retailers choose to order.

Not sure how 'reliable' those numbers are supposed to be, but yeah, I believe people put too much stock in them.

SF5 is Pc and ps4, so Sony just might just not care as much about games being on Pc or not.

10% increase for xbone.

Seriously though, I'm just impressed they are still tracking down to that ridiculously small quantity.

What's the longest period between "stopping manufacture" and "no longer tracking", anyway? I'm curious if, say, there was a week when the no-longer-tracked DS still managed to outsell the Xbox One, but at some point the stock simply wouldn't be there.

Hmm... slow week before big week for Super Mario 3D All-Stars? Or something even bigger later down the line?

I think it's what you said, W36/W37 might just be lower before going a little out with the following weeks

W38/W39 to close the quarter and have huge shipments during these two weeks with SM3DC

Jesus, shortages intill at least November. It's hard to tell if Nintendo will satisfy demand during this holiday yet

DS was definitively the biggest victim of piracy in the history of consoles.
Ha I remember going to my mom and pop store back in the day and every time there would be that one guy asking "do you sell R4 cards?"

One time the store owner just went ham and ask that poor soul to get the hell out of his store.

The PSP sold 50 million units outside of Japan

Why the "PSP was a disaster" revisionist history keeps beeing peddle is a mystery
I think it's because people werent buying games with their PSP, they were just hacking it and playing whatever game for free, atleast thats how it felt to me during that time period
