What noteworthy games? All the headliners seem to not be on it. Sakura Taisen, REsistance, FFVIIR, Yakuza 7, Death Stranding, DBZ Kakarot and even L5's big announcement is a PS4 port.

I know Level 5 is a mess and will botch it. Just saying that having a PS4 version for Europe always made sense for the game, they're just doing this in a weird way announcing it after the Switch version flopped and is full of problems that they haven't fixed yet. Besides the fact that we all know L5 is terrible at publishing games overseas by themselves.

True.

When are we going to start the talks about the lack of Switch games on TGS and japanese third party support btw

Don't think next gen matters much when they're trying to sell it to kids. This isn't the audience to be early adopters of brand new consoles. It's a move that gives them a few extra sales in Europe.

If they are trying to sell to kids, PS4 is definitely the wrong platform.

I'm almost sure that TGS will end and Switch will have zero big announcements.
That really depends on what you consider a big announcement. Outside of something like Momotaro Densetsu the only really big announcement in general has been Yakuza 7 and even that isn't exactly new.

I guess there's Resident Evil as well lol.

Famitsu has GTAV at #30 with 1,145 sales but could it be an error and they meant 1,415 (#29 is 1,437) cause otherwise it would be down from last week (1,395 copies), even though PS4 HW increased and this is the type of game to benefit from it.

I'm gonna be on the opposite side here. Yokai Watch 4 on PS4 is a good move for Level-5.
PS4 is a console with more than 100m+ userbase. a worldwide release on Switch/PS4/PC maybe can recoup costs and make some profits for the company. PS4 is a hard platform to ignore with this big of a userbase, it is turning into another PS2.
Actually, maybe more Japanese companies should start to act this way, like Atlus/Sega.

Nioh 2 early next year. I wonder can it improve on the launch sales of the first I've a good feeling in me bones.
So, Yokai Watch 4 is also going to PS4.

Boom! One of the few remaining third party titles not yet on PlayStation. Sony have hit it out of the park in this regard this gen. Won't sell much but good to see it. Years ago I was calling for YKW and MHW on ps4 and both have happened.
Worldwide? DMC2 will vastly outsell a PS4 version of YW4. No one asked for this
But this is a Japanese sales thread! 😉

Atlus actually makes money with Persona on Playstation and SMT on Nintendo. Doubt they will change how they've always operated. They're kinda like Falcom in that they're successful the way they are and there's no need to change.

There is no need to change... this is the mentality that made Japan lose its leadership in this industry. Falcom games sales are down in Japan with Vita's death, and from what we know YsVIII sold very well on Switch oversees.

Western companies strategy of multi-platform games proved to be the more effective strategy long term, it put them in a favorable position to negotiate with platform holders which promote them by spending millions of dollars, or pay a lot for some exclusive content, while the games also continue to build a fanbase on all platforms.

I'm sure there is an audience for P5 on other platforms, Yakuza, SMTV, and Sakura Wars too. they are just limiting themselves, being comfortable with what they have.

I see Atlus case as a bit different from the other (declining) companies as they're actually selling more now than they used to and they never were a company focusing on multiplatform development, like Bandai Namco, Sega, etc. They support both Sony and Nintendo as well, just with different games. Maybe they could sell more by putting Persona on Switch and SMT on Playstation, but I'm inclined to believe they have reasons to prefer focusing on exclusivity, like making sure the game is suited for a specific platform and having marketing deals with Nintendo/Sony.

I agree that Japan's third parties needs to take a look at their own market to understand that it's declining because of their own incompetence. It's pretty obvious when Nintendo is still able to sell millions while the others barely still have popular franchises.

Oh Kerotan. I'm always reminded of how much you don't care for other platforms. You're satisfied as long as every game gets ported to the PS4. It serves as a grim reminder of how terrifying the world would be if Nintendo and Microsoft truly goes third-party. Your behavior closely resembles hardcore Disney fans that actually want the conglomerate to buy everything up.

Wouldn't it be nice if other platforms get the same treatment? To have games ported to their platform regardless of sales performance? Man, you can't get games on Switch or Xbox or PC even if a previous entry was successful on it. How nice would it be if the community here actually supports multi-platform games for ALL platforms instead of it meaning "exclusives being ported to the PS4". Probably be a wholesome community without console wars when everyone supports each other's choice of platform and believes they all deserve the right to play third-party games on their preferred platforms. :)

The only issue here is we don't even have a date for the localization, the key to over 90 percent of the PS4 base. While I would like to think they have that already worked out and it will be soon, Level 5 and solid release dates aren't exactly an iconic duo.

If Level 5 lost Nintendo's support for YW4 at west it might sell worse than YW3.

Level-5 is of course trying to differentiate as much as it can. I wonder whether we'll see a third version of Yo-kai Watch 4 under holidays---even if the PS4 post might signal it won't get release, at least as soon (but Level-5 is pretty much unpredictable).

I'm curious to see what they have in the pipeline as their next big thing.

What? I never called for YW to be exclusive so not sure where you get that angle from. I'm happy it's coming to the ps4 and day 1. From a selfish point of view I wouldn't want every game to be developed for switch as they'd be reduced in scope to incorporate the weaker hardware. If Nintendo released a console with the power of a modern playstation I'd be more then happy to see it get every 3rd party title. Having said that even if a game is announced for the ps4 and Switch day 1 it really doesn't bother me. It's good to see Nintendo and Sony both on top

Fire Emblem scooting along. With digital it's easily over 250,000 in Japan. Which is nice enough though I am thankful its Japanese performance isn't indicative of its world wide performance haha.

Really wonder who L5 will team up with for future Western releases - I can't see Nintendo bothering with YW anymore ....

Hope they figure out something that works for them. They want to be everywhere and spreading themselves too thin.

Are most big TGS announcements out on the first day or two? Or are some announcements saved for later/last? I do pay attention to TGS (uSuAlLy) but I don't keep track of when the biggest announcements happen. Would be nice to see one cool Switch announcement or two, but at this point I'm not holding my breath.

I hope there are many 3:rd party Switch games announced at TGS. If not then it doesn't bode well for the console market if console sales dwindle for MS while ignoring such a big market like Switch

To be honest from a purely technical point of view it's good to see YW4 on a stronger console. It's a beautiful game that really struggles on Switch, at least now a version that runs better will be out there.

It is interesting though, wonder if it means no Nintendo help for the western release. Maybe they did this port because they knew already.

L5 is confused and lost.

Pretty much. But it's not the first time we have seen weird decisions from Level5. They pretty much abandoned their most lucrative audience last gen outside of milking Youkai Watch in favour of mobile market and wasting a lot of resources on NiNoKuni2. YW4 on PS4 in particular looks like a move out of desperation, as nothing else seems to be at a presentable state right now. Their success during the NDS and 3DS days could be things in the past, nothing that is currently known looks promising. Basically reduced themselves from mini Square to pseudo Atlus.

"really struggles" is a bit of a hyperbole. It has some framerate issues but nothing preventing to enjoy the game. Also, it's more a matter of Level-5 rushing development rather than Switch being unable to run that thing.

Level-5 has proved to be able to constantly release hits. They were the only Japanese third-party publisher of the past 15 years to be able to create million seller new IPs in Japan: Layton, Inazuma and then Yo-kai Watch. Even other IPs had some kind of success like Fantasy Life.

Hino definitely mismanaged Level-5 in the past few years focusing too much on Yo-kai Watch and betting on toys-to-life with The Snack World BUT the guy has business sense and if there's a developer who can come back with a hit that's definitely Level-5.

I've been probably the biggest defender of Level 5 these past few years here but even I am at a loss of words before what Level 5 considers an important TGS announcement today.

Really hope they manage to get back on their feet at some point in the future.

Are the Yokai Watch games particularly successful in any European country? At least in Germany, all of the games are among the few Nintendo releases that dropped in price sharply and quickly. With the exception of Yokai Watch 3, because they only shipped like 5 copies total of it.

I generally agree that having kids focused titles also on PS4 makes sense for the European market, but in Yokai Watch's case I wonder if we are talking about more than a few thousand copies here.

It is successful in France and Spain, but those are countries where the 3DS was already strong.

Level 5 is a shadow of the past and there's nothing at horizon that can change it. Yo-kai Watch 4 failed and everything else is at development hell.

Unfortunate turn from what they used to be but this was written at wall from years ago with the shortsighted strategy they followed. Sometime the well would dry.

If Nintendo really stopped helping them at west things will go even worse.

More like close to 500k. There is a big chance half of the sales will come from vouchers.

Same things were extensively written during DS->3DS transition. According to many, before YW became a hit, Level-5 was dead, incapable of innovating again, and so, as Layton and Inazuma Eleven were declining a lot with respect to previous entries (Azran Legacy sold around 250k on 3DS in 2013). Also, many flops like Cinderella RPG, Guild 01, Time Travelers, Gundam Age, and so on.

YW was released in 2013 but became a big hit only in 2014. Quite unexpected and was actually called a flop at the beginning (50k-ish FW).

Not saying Level-5 will be back at its peak but I wouldn't rule out new hits from them given the information now available. You don't create 3 million sellers IPs in the span of 8 years without being able to read market trends. Sure, they definitely went wrong with overfocusing on YW and thinking toys-to-life were going to be a big thing but let's see what they have in their sleeves for the next few years.
