But those old presumptions are working wonders for them, so are they in the wrong?

I would argue yes. It worked fine so far but you really have to ignore market trends to justify neglecting a clear market leader, while the horse you are betting on is about to die. Missing to built an audience on a healthy ecosystem is indeed a mistake. That's the reason why most 3rd Party IPs declined significantly and games like Breath of the Wild is running circles around a mainline Final Fantasy (15) game. This reminds me how not too long ago Koei was fine with their PS focus and milking Dynasty Warriors until even the most loyal fans felt fatigue, all this time they did a terrible job at rejuvenating their userbase until it was too late.

I feel like there's been a lot of interest in the new Sakura Wars. Great numbers on Youtube, very positive feedback overall, big presence at TGS... I think it might do well.

I think you're referring to DQIX DS. Didn't at some point people thinking DQIX was actually moved to PSP?

I don't think that's the DQM they were hinting at a few months ago, though.

There was no hint, it's confirmed they are making a new one which has Kamyu as the protagonist. This is just a warm up to bring DQM fans to the Switch.

This past era surely built bridges and people like Harada and Nagoshi careers are indeed strongly connected with their efforts on Playstation1+2. Tekken especially was strongly supported by Sony themselves. But these days are gone
One could say we're in the reset era now.
badum tsss :P

Haha no.
Nintendo skips TGS every year, and PlayStation and its third-party support are all focused on the global audience now. The amount of time between the original Japanese release of a big RPG and its western localisation has become much smaller: from more than a year (if not, multiple years) to a half year max - usually a couple of months, and sometimes even day to date.

The Japanese market just is not as important anymore. It makes much more sense to announce a game at E3 or Gamescom, because the big expos for North America and Europe are right before Tokyo Game Show. Where in the past, marketing is fully focused on Japan for new projects, and then do a new marketing cycle for the western release after the Japanese launch, nowadays those two campaigns happen at the same time.

Along with the worldwide phenomenon that companies can speak to consumers directly much easier than 10 years ago, publishers need expos less and less to spread the word of their game, or show new trailers or content. Trade shows slowly turn into consumer shows, and it will be more and more about the experience than the ability to get your hands on brand new games first. People play less different games per year anyway.

So I'm afraid Tokyo Game Show will never return to its former glory as a major game announcement hub. It will stay as a consumer expo with fan events like tournaments, cosplay shows, and news about content updates for local games (especially mobile), but not so much about the reveal of new console games that will need to be marketed internationally anyway. That doesn't mean there will be a point without any new game announcements or so. Just that, like this year, the amount of new games can be counted with your own hands.

So with it being the middle of September, I'd say we're safe to assume IE Ares is not making 2019. L5 is a mess.

Without Inazuma Eleven this will be another bad year for Level 5. For 2019 they have YW4 and YW1 in October, sales will end around half million again.

I saw that the Snack world got rated. They'll likely have 2 Layton games and that game for the Holidays in the West.

The cartoon for Snack World started airing a few months back in Europe (or at least in France), so it should release soon here too.

Not really expecting a fast transition from most Japanese devs. So I doubt we'll be flooded by PS5 games next TGS.

I'm a bit confused by the NNK and Level 5 situation anyway. Before the movie and the comments about it being a very important IP for them I was under the impression that Bandai Namco was running the show and owned the IP. But if it's that important to Level 5, does that mean that they can leave Bandai, or that they're fine being only the devs for hire?

Level 5 own it. The DS and PS3 games were both developed and published independently, Bandai Namco only got involved to publish the PS3 game outside of Japan.

They could theoretically ditch BN.

Well damn, KT are actually bringing back the Angelique series as part of the 25th Anniversary of their Neo Romance brand. No new game in 17 years or so.

No title yet, Switch release, more details in early 2020.

They did Angelique Retour on PSP/Vita a year or two ago right? I know that's just a remake but still, not like the IP has been dormant all this time.

All I know is that the next couple years will be exciting (albeit possibly tragic, too).

PS4 will mostly stay at circa 10k per week. PS5 has little hope to fundamentally change PlayStation's performance in Japan. That means Japan will be (even more than now) de facto Nintendo-land. And that's where it gets interesting.

Will big publishers completely give up on Japan? Despite Japanese 'honor' and all?
Where will smaller publishers go and what does that mean for the future?
Will publishers try to appeal even more to the West or will we eventually witness a return to embracing the home audience?
Most concretely: Will Square Enix make a Dragon Quest 12 that panders to the West or will they stay true to Japan's #1 traditional jrpg?
And lastly: Will Nintendo be able to take advantage of the situation or will they (once again) be too passive?

Exciting.
nintendo doesn't really have to do anything, third parties are already on the path to proper nintendo support, this will have to keep trending up or they face extinction, many developers and franchises cant bet or rely on west only for sales, when they fail others will rise to take their place and in reality theres no limit to Nintendos grip, their b and c games will benefit the most since they tend to be new ips or genres that overlap third party titles and steer from Nintendos forte

nintendo has always survived and found success based on their own software and hardware, third parties are in reality irrelevant to nintendos success, but nintendo is definitely not irrelevant to third parties, the sooner they adjust the better for them

definitely exciting times ahead, there will be major changes or major deaths, those are the only two likely scenarios

Btw, what are the expectations for DQ11S in Japan?

The expectations here seem to be pretty high for what is essentially a late port of a 2017 game with some additional features. The 3DS was a far more accessible platform, and you could already play the current 3D version on PS4. I honestly don't quite see why this game would sell more than like ~300K LTD on Switch (so like a KH collection game). Sure playing the PS4 version on the go essentially is cool, but I would think plenty of people were happy enough playing the 3DS version already. Those who weren't probably had a PS4 and played it there then b/c they care about graphics, etc. Maybe it just gets boosted along with the Switch Lite is the idea?

Funny joke, but the TGS trailer for IE Ares (that's available nowhere online) still says 2019.

Even the person seems surprised it's still listed and wondering if it's still true, LMAO.

And yeah, an update: the Inazuma Eleven Ares (technically Orion) anime is definitely ending this month, confirmed via an Interview in Animage. I long suspected it because it was being replaced by another OLM show (Zoids Wild Zero), but... Eh.

Apparently the planned Online Shorts are still in production, but won't continue Ares/Orion story. So there's that, but not holding my breath of those launching any time soon.

God, I feel so sorry for OLM and TV Tokyo being screwed over by this whole thing....

It depends because the additional features in the Switch Edition are an incentive for people to buy it again.

Though, people's expectations on the forum have been tame for it (not tame for a late but enhanced port, but tame for the IP involved). I would say 500K LTD as the upper limit for it.

this was based on nothing other than the fact that the ds was weak in power and people not being able to comprehend the idea of portable mainline dragon quest, even tho portable mh and many other RPGs already did well on ds/psp by that time

switch version got announced very early so many people could have held off from buying ds/ps4 version

like many games, the fact that it's a console experience on everyone's handheld is enough of a selling point, especially since it's not just simply a port but has extra content too

500k+ seems likely

The massive difference is that SE doesn't treat this as a late port but as a new version of DQXI, which means this gets extensive marketing.

Is the bolded actually allowing later ports to sell well though?

The vast majority of late ports seem to have sold predictably low numbers and some (like God Eater 3) has come in under what people would expect based on becoming handheld.

It kind of actually seems that selling late ports is becoming more difficult.

The expectation from Bishop below is what I'm pretty sure I've seen from others. I could be wrong though. Double dippers isn't generally a huge audience either.

I think people holding off for 2 years is very very unlikely, especially given there was basically silence about the Switch version for at least a year after DQ11 released. You could easily buy the game cheaply used on both PS4 / 3DS. This also is a single player RPG, so having legs is very unlikely. I think 500K+ would be incredibly unlikely, although I'd love to be wrong.

The massive difference is that SE doesn't treat this as a late port but as a new version of DQXI, which means this gets extensive marketing.
I agree that at least Square Enix is marketing it well and is generally doing everything in their power to make the late / enhanced port sell well (good amount of extra content, solid port, releasing right after the Switch Lite, etc.). I think it'll sell fine in Japan for a late port (200K+ is already pretty decent imo).

Also anyone think this year thus far has been pretty bad for JP software sales at least at retail? Basically every title has at best done as expected and generally done worse.

KH3 - good opening, no legs, resulting in an alright result given KH2 was released 10+ years ago on PS2.
RE2R - did a little better than RE7, but still a huge drop from RE5/6 days.
DMCV - Couldn't even break 200K - genre has apparently shrunk even more than expected
NSMBU - Has done fairly well for a late port
Yoshi's Crafted World - Sold disappointingly (I know Yoshi isn't as popular, but these numbers didn't show any growth on Switch). Even Yoshi's New Island sold better.
Super Dragon Ball Heroes Mission - I know this wasn't a high budget game, but it didn't even hit the usual 200-300K that multiple 3DS DB titles hit.
Yokai Watch 4 - It just sold terribly compared to previous installments. Sure the franchise has declined, but this was far worse than most were expecting.
Mario Maker 2 - Has done as expected at retail and it all depends on legs (vouchers affect this and thus it's likely doing better, but by how much). Still needs to catch up to Mario Maker 3DS's holiday sales at retail.
Fire Emblem 3 Houses - Pretty poorly at retail compared to Fates / Awakening. Maybe vouchers keep it closer to Fates / Awakening sales due to them being such a good deal, but at least at retail, we're currently looking at a 50% drop.
Astral Chain - sells at Bayo 2 Wii U numbers at retail. Vouchers may play a big role again, but we'll see.
Fishing Spirits - has done well. Beats our expectations because no one knew what it was.
Switch 2017/2018 evergreens - killing it (basically the only bright spot)
