uh... one extra digit?
No, he meant that by week 47 2018, Switch had sold that number of systems in 2018. Switch will have sold that number in 2019 as of this week.

Week 47 2018:
Code:
|System | This Week | Last Week | Last Year | YTD | Last YTD | LTD |
+-------+------------+------------+------------+------------+------------+-------------+
| NSW | 113.341 | 180.585 | 133.746 | 2.323.645 | 2.413.840 | 5.730.803 |

Sure why not. The comparison will highlight how much Vita failed to it's predecessor and how the ps4 is beating it's predecessor so far.
But that's just splitting them again. It'd be like comparing Switch+Lite to 3DS and just normal Switch to Wii U, although Switch is still besting both combined globally.

Sony ended production of the Vita and ceased all software support. They have one platform for dedicated game development, the PS4. Why are we not comparing it to the combined totals of PS3 + PSP?

A: Because that would be dumb.

So what's the problem with this comparison? It shouldn't even be that hard for the switch to beat 3ds+wii u especially WW. And in the end the switch is the direct successor to both those platforms.

The issue is still comparing the Switch to NDS+Wii as you were originally saying. No single console will ever come close to that and it is unreasonable in the same way that comparing the PS4 to the PS3+PSP is unreasonable.

"If Switch doesn't sell 250m LTD is a failure" makes no sense to anyone with a brain. It's an insane number that will never be reached this generation or the next by any manufacturer.

Console industry needs to expand a lot to reach that audience with a single system.

It also completely ignores overlap in those numbers, as many folks bought both systems in the past but only need one Switch.

That comparison complements the heights Nintendo reached before the mobile boom took a large chunk of their market. It serves as a reminder as to how big they became. While much smaller now, their profits are extremely healthy which just proves you don't always need absolute numbers to be a success.

A bit like the ps4 vs ps2 in Japan. Sure it looks ugly in terms of units sold, but look at the profits and it ain't so bad.

Nintendo dropped 4.3% in value literally for this blunder. That man is dead.

Then why do you think it makes more sense to compare absolute numbers to determine success. /s
