Any company that makes the majority of their sales on PlayStation might be off Microsoft's menu. It would have to be a company in dire straits.

This would be the majority of publishers and developers these days because of the market share of PS4 vs. XB1, no? (Excepting PC-centric developers like, say, CDPR or id Software, although those still sell more units on PlayStation compared to Xbox most likely.)

A company has to be willing to sell at the end of the day, and not everyone will be willing to.

We're not that far removed from Ubisoft fending off a major conglomerate.

Pretty much, especially domestically. They could make an offer to individual independent visual novel studio with a built in fanbase and build their way up.

Azur Lane released on PS4 in Japan at August 2019 and on PS4/PC overseas at February 2020. It took until Switch Japanese release last week for shipments to top 200k.

This will probably never happen, but both this thread and the Zenimax purchase is now making me entertain the thought of people like Harada and Nagoshi just offering up their companies (Falcom, Bandai Namco, etc.) for Sony to purchase. Could say it's all for the sake of the Big Western Push, but also because of the bias.

Again, this will never happen (Sega Bandai-Namco is more likely though that's still extremely unlikely), but it would be a complete meme if it did. xD

Goddamnit, Microsoft. You really opened up those floodgates. Just as Monster Hunter Switch finally stopped being a meme. xD

90% of merges and acquisitions of Japanese gaming companies have happened when they had financial problems. They need the approval of Japanese government and the possibility of a western company involved makes it even more difficult.

Even if Nintendo or Sony were ready to cut a check for Bandai Namco it's unlikely they would proceed due to Japanese anti trust laws.

Level 5 is the only big company in financial trouble and I don't really see anyone picking them up.

Nintendo is actually the one with money tied up in Japanese third parties. I knew about the stakes in Bandai Namco and Kadokawa Dwango but someone pointed out today(and linked to Nintendo annual report) that Nintendo also has minority stakes in Square Enix, Konami and Koei Tecmo.

NIS was in financial trouble a year or two ago, but I'm not sure that's still the case. The only somewhat valuable franchise they have is Disgaea, so I doubt see anyone wanting them either.

Even cdpr games sold 3:1 ratio on ps4 (11 mil to 4 mil) I think

Money talk most places though

So what's the next thing we will argue about in Media Create threads from now on?

Hottake:
PsychoMantis made these threads entertaining back on Gaf.

Conspiracy and acquisitions :b

Now they just need stakes in Sega and Capcom.

Weird note is that THIS of all things gets a legit retail release in NA (and EU?). Super Neptunia RPG was their only western retail release on Switch. The rest were held hostage by Limited Run. Hopefully this is a sign of that changing.
The mobile game is pretty popular in NA, but the game is banned on here, so just by going on here one wouldn't know.

It's probably their biggest seller, it's based on a bigger IP than anything else IF does.

Any idea on the amounts in each company Nintendo has?

Also yeah, NIS feels primed for a Nintendo buyout, especially with Disgaea 6 being Switch exclusive in the west. Likely the most unheard of thing a gen ago.

I mean is Crosswave a bigger seller than their golden goose Neptunia? Even VII on Switch was digital-only worldwide.

Very tiny amounts. 1.75% of Bandai Namco for instance.

I don't think there's any chance Nintendo is interested in buying NIS, and one regional exclusive definitely isn't a sign of that.

As for the Switch... It doesn't really pose a threat to MS. Especially if they keep on with the ports a year after the fact. I don't think they would put them out Day 1, but 6-12 months later after farming them out to one of the dedicated porting companies? There's no harm. By that point everyone who wanted the game on XBox/PS will have bought it and the games will have been through multiple Steam sales so they're basically sucking marrow from the bones by that point on their primary demographics. Switch is a fresh audience and it's a good way to pick up additional sales for people who want to double-dip on a portable version without paying for a laptop.

I think, additionally, Switch provides smaller Xbox Studios development teams a good opportunity to work on their optimization of their titles. Cuphead saw a drastic decrease on all platforms as a product of Switch development, and Ori on Switch (at least the first title) is basically on par for the Xbox One version.

It also gives Xbox Studios the opportunity to get a little bit of cashflow from the Japanese market that isn't just more Minecraft.

Is there anyone who likes to report on these things? Someone with inside information? Like a Twitter account I could follow?

Somewhere. I think.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars digital sales look to be higher than usual for his price range.

Not surprising, it's a voucher title.

ec.nintendo.com

I suspect lots of people will use their second voucher for SM3DW. That's 7 218 Yen + 6 578 Yen, so 3 816 Yen saved.

A remake of a port of a remake of a ps3 game. I can't get over it, like PS6 will probably get a remake of this game's port to stadia.

Bravely Default 2 has a rating in Australia now. Could be a December title?
Tales of Arise also got rated in Australia a while back...so I wouldn't put much stock in it yet.

True, also I remember Codename STEAM being rated before it was announced lol

Also saw this Gaijinhunter tweet

I assume Nintendo may operate differently compared to Bandai Namco in terms of time / methods for requesting ratings to certification boards (Tales of Arise' Australian rating happened after the delay announcement, btw). But yeah, I would still assume that the game has been delayed to early 2021. A December release would be a positive surprise at this point though.
