Is World of Final Fantasy Maxima not getting a retail release in Japan? I haven't seen pre orders open on amazon.
NPD does report unit sales, but as MatPiscatella mentions, units don't track trends. And they put out rankings by revenue, what games are making the most money at retailI always viewed npd numbers as kind of a joke since they are so infrequent and don't actually report sales but instead some earnings value that is completely coiffed by the publisher?
I'm sure if they were to give numbers to Japanese analytics groups they would want some sort of control over the messaging, and that deal probably isn't good for Media Create and Enterbrain.
What do you mean with infrequent? That its only once a month?I always viewed npd numbers as kind of a joke since they are so infrequent and don't actually report sales but instead some earnings value that is completely coiffed by the publisher?

I see. Like ILikeFeet mentioned, NPD does track unit sales as well. I think they just report on earnings because they feel that its more representable (like some game might be on sale for $20, while another might be $60, or even $80+ for limited editions etc.).probably meant real, solid sales figures, not just rankings and chart %s

"また各プラットフォーム、ダウンロード販売のみです。"The Japanese price is set at 5,800 Yen + taxes for all SKUs, and the Expansion pack for PS4 and Steam is at 3,400 Yen, so I doubt it's digital-only. Weird that preorders haven't started yet though, true.

This is the official website btw. If anyone can help with translations of specific parts that could help understanding whether it's physical or not, it'd be great :D
NPD tracks everything still. It's just that they no longer report unit sales publicly. If a company pays the boatload of money for the reports (apart from leaks), all that info seems to be in there.I always viewed npd numbers as kind of a joke since they are so infrequent and don't actually report sales but instead some earnings value that is completely coiffed by the publisher?

NPD comes from retailers as sell-through. Much like Japanese analysis dataSorry, I worded it poorly, I meant that they don't make that info public.
Yeah, once a month is not frequent enough. I am sure they have much more granular data, but if that data is not readily available, then it is useless.
I prefer the way the Japanese analytics companies do it, and while it is unfortunate that they do not have access to digital sales, I am sure there is a good reason they don't want to make whatever concession to the publishers to get that information.
The JP reporting groups also give sell-in data. I'm not sure if NPD does as well?NPD comes from retailers as sell-through. Much like Japanese analysis data
Tracking revenue avoids issues like "bayonetta sold 1M units! Why was the sequel canceled?"
Good points.I do think revenue is far more useful. Not only accounts for discounts but could even track things like dlc
I understand. I agree that weekly data is better, but i dont think monthly data is really that much worse either. Only downside to that is the longer wait :) And i agree that units is more interesting than revenue.Yeah, once a month is not frequent enough. I assume so through deals with publishers (probably in exchange for other data)The JP reporting groups also give sell-in data. I'm not sure if NPD does as well?
Why are people surprised by Torna? It's not actually a "bad" performance considering the physical version probably makes up a super small portion of people since the majority would have it with the DLC already. I actually guess it's mostly double dippers who wanted the cartridge for collection.
It's been advertised as downloadable dlc since day one of the game. The news of a physical version didn't come until many people already bought the DLC.it bombed hard everywhere and it's a nintendo fault since they don't know how to promote in the right way things that are not Mario or Zelda games. Torna trailer reveal on youtube has 180k views, I feel bad atm, monolith deserve better.
also, famitsu shared the % and it's <20-40>

Good points.
I must admit that i do find it more interesting to know the units rather than revenue.

I was thinking more about what we get now, where the japanese chart only accounts for units, and NPD doesnt give unit sales. I prefer unit sales between those two. Or did you just mean it as a general statement. But yeah, getting both would of course be the best indeed :)Of course getting both would be the best. Size of base and enthusiasm of base.
And Xenoblade 2 sold amazingly with 1M in 1 month.

I don't see how you can spin a JRPG selling 20-40% first week positively. It bombed at retail.
i'm guessing same with chocobo? Is World of Final Fantasy Maxima not getting a retail release in Japan? I haven't seen pre orders open on amazon.

Note: in the past few years, the ratio between preorder points and thousands of units sold have costantly decreased, and the past few months saw several examples of a much lower ratio than usual for several games (i.e. more actual thousands sold per preorder point), considering their platforms and genres (The Last Guardian, Poochy and Yoshi's Wolly World, Nioh, Final Fantasy XV as the first major examples).
* the original Attack on Titan from KT displayed a very high actual sales / final COMG preorder pts ratio: the Vita version ended with 30pts (regular version), the PS4 one with 24pts (regular version) at best, buth both SKUs debuted at over 60,000 copies in their first week. This might've happened due to advertising impacting on-the-spot purchases; there is no certainty we're going to see a similar phenomenon with AoT2, which means we could see a lower purchases / preorders ratio.
No and it's not even Nintendo's first (New Super Luigi U).Is Torna the first stand-alone DLC sold separately and physically ? Do we have any kind of past sales to help us grasp whether this result was good or bad ? Do Torna's sales even matter ?

Its a expansion which is otherwise a very meaty DLC, enough that Nintendo could sell it as a physical game but still DLC nonethelessTorna is NOT a dlc. it's a prequel, a standalone game with different mechanics and a new world, like uncharted lost legacy. and that's the fault, they promote it as a dlc
