I wouldn't say Mario Kart is that comparable. Splatoon is built around regular updates and events. Nintendo themselves have shown how Splatoon has clear peaks around Splatfests.

I don't think a year or two is any issue, but if we're talking say 2022-23 until Splatoon 3 and we have several years without any updates... How can anyone say that won't have a negative impact?

People play and still played the first Splatoon even after the updates stopped and before a sequel was announce. ARMS stopped updating a long time ago and it still sells and has a strong community.

Luigi's Mansion is out in 4 weeks and still nobody cares in Japan. West must carry a big weight of its sales this time but with 3DS having turned into a budget machine for software I don't hear positive things for US. Europe next week will give a good idea for it's opening.

I'm still on the MK9 on switch train.

only slightly depends on what the scope of Mario Kart tour is and how it intersects with mk8d.
otherwise my stance on mk9 hasn't changed.

I think MK9 will be a reboot. It's hard to top MK8D. I feel they need to make Mario Kart into Diddy Kong Racing; add a full-fledged adventure mode with a hub, boss races, and literally merge it with the DKR IP, so having Diddy be a sort of co-star would make sense.

Maybe that'd give Nintendo the incentive to finally buy the characters and whatnot from DKR from Microsoft, since they do in fact own them. TT was going to be in Fast and the Furrious on 360.

doubt they'd ever do a full on reboot.
I'd expect MK9 to have 8 or more more tracks from old Mario karts, as they've been doing for over a decade

It'd make no sense to do another "more of the same" entry on Switch at least. If they do MK9 on Switch, it needs to stand out with some fresh ideas.

As far as I know, Nintendo never do two games on a platform of the same franchise with the same concept, bar story-driven games I guess like Mario & Luigi.

Well Super Mario Galaxy also but that's rare and was historical when it happened.

But these sorts of multiplayer iterative games like Smash and Mario Kart, well I don't see them doing another on the same system without major changes.

I think it'd have a new gimmick or two. (I'm leaning Kart building like lego racers for one of the gimmicks. They're basically 1/3 there.)
possibly an adventure/challenge mode even.

I just don't think it'd be in reboot territory

Mario Kart Nuts & Bolts? :P

Could work actually, especially if they convince MS to let them bring Banjo aboard! LOL

well Mario Party [edit] comes to mind. maybe Mario & Sonic but it's not developed by Nintendo

never played nuts and bolts but I doubt it'd be that involved.
it'd just depth-less like lego racers where you try to make something that looks cool but does jack all

Isn't Star Fox Grand Prix rumored to be our new "Diddy Kong Racing" anyways?

As much as I'd personally love it, Nintendo hasn't given a big single player focus to Mario Kart with a campaign.

Theres also Zelda Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword on Wii. Its definitelly unusual, but if a game is released very early in the system lifetime, i think maybe another entry has a bigger chance of happening. I also expect Mario Kart 9 to arrive on Switch since MK8D was basically a port and a launch window title. But its hard to say for sure.

I would add to this that one of the reasons why games like Smash and Mario Kart only have one entry per system could be because in the past the focus of development was split between two platforms at any point in time. Now that Switch has the full EPD focus, it is more reasonable to expect teams to do an entry in a franchise twice. Combine that with, as test_account said, that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was a very early game, and I feel it's not out of the realm of possibility at all that there could be a MK9 on Switch. I do agree that they can't make it a minimal upgrade from MK8D, otherwise it might not reach its full potential, but there should be plenty to add to MK8D, as good as it is (e.g. more single player content and more online modes - kind of like the way Splatoon 2 refreshed online play with a new mode in Salmon Run).

How many 4m+ selling franchise people could see in the upcoming years ?

I am going with Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Splatoon as the strongest contenders with both Mario Kart and Smash having a shot.

Shows how bad people are at analyzing these things.

With only USF II, a Japan only release of MH XX and Resident Evil Revelations Collection getting over a million sales is pretty good.
Over a million physical only too, keep in mind RER Collection was digital only in Europe. 1.1m for those releases is frankly insane, especially when you consider the multiplat heavy Xbox One lineup, including MHW, did only slightly better at 1.35m.

How have Assassin's Creeds opened in Japan? Is Odyssey's above the norm? It feels like it.
Code:
PS3 Assassin's Creed III 85.918 136.794 Ubisoft 15/11/2012
PS3 Assassin's Creed II 55.789 109.813 Ubisoft 03/12/2009
PS4 Assassin's Creed: Origins 53.716 113.642 Ubisoft 27/10/2017
PS3 Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag 50.032 102.751 Ubisoft 28/11/2013
PS4 Assassin's Creed: Unity 43.838 222.942 Ubisoft 20/11/2014
PS4 Assassin's Creed: Syndicate 39.858 58.343 Ubisoft 12/11/2015
So pretty much in line with what AC typically does in Japan.

M-C 3DS Top 10 games by Week 40, 2012(2012 TOTAL):
1) New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 1.217.056 (1.743.791)
2) Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D - 874.431 (919.870)

TOTAL: 5.228.427 (6.432.209)

The tail of 2012 best selling games were as pronounced as Switch titles. >450K of additional sales in the next 12 weeks was made by New Super Mario Bros 2, personally I think Splatoon 2, Super Mario Party, Minecraft and potentially Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can all sell >450K in the next 12 weeks.
Both 3DS and Switch still have their biggest games to launch in the next 12 weeks. Animal Crossing sold 1.969.955 it's possible Smash will easily hit 2M, Pokemon Lets Go is more a question mark but it will should do around 1.5M at least as the first Pokemon Switch game that's launching ahead of holidays where Nintendo will sell at least 2M units of hardware.

Somewhere. I think.
Just looked at the latest anime ratings, some interesting stuff:

1) Sazae-san (11.6%)
2) Chibi Maruko-chan (8.3%)
3) Detective Conan / Case Closed (7.5%)
4) One Piece (5%)
5) Ace Attorney S2 (4.6%) (S2 debut)
6) Gegege ni Kitarou (4%)
7) Pokémon Sun and Moon (3.1%)
8) Go! Go! Chuggington (2.4%)
9) Huggto! Precure (2.4%)
10) Layton anime (2.3%)

First time I'm seeing the Layton anime showing up. Ace Attorney anime seems to be at roughly same level as S1 after the initial hype died down).

Retailer hints vol.3

Supply problems for Warriors Orochi 4 are resolved, they didn't last more than a few days.
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey avoids price drops so far, this and next week are the crucial.
Interest for Soul Calibur VI is low, most of its sales will come from first week.

Pokemon is gonna be a curious one. the show feels like it's dragging its feet due to aimlessness. with the Aether story and the Necrozma story wrapped up with little fanfare, it's gonna be interesting to see how they maintain interest until Gen 8. there's the League build-up arc going on (and Hau's being introduced for Ash to lose to) and the show is largely a SoL, so maybe they can stretch it till next year. just haven't seen much enthusiasm for it, and the time slot change might hurt it more

Yup, pretty surprising.

Hope we'll see more Capcom stuff on the system. But I'm expecting a Resident Evil dump next year.

It's generally after the MH part and before the "is switch really the 3ds successor ?" part.

I see.

I personally don't see a Splatoon 3 unless they plan to do some major changes to the core gameplay that isn't feasible for Splatoon 2 since Splatoon used a GAAS model unlike say COD. As far as I know, the Animal Crossing team also don't do multiplier sequels for one system and I doubt that will change just because the Switch is currently Nintendo's prime system.

So, Hino didn't actually wanted to showcase YW4 and Ares at TGS but was kinda pushed out to do it apparently. They're also seemingly going to announce their 20th anniversary title soon (and they don't want it to release after the 20th anniversary year):

No wonder that they delayed their games. Their ressources are stretched between 3 major games.

Really curious about the anniversary game, wonder when it will be announced.
