SMO has sold ~700k more, and 3D Mario never had the legs of something like Mario Kart or now Splatoon.
it goes to show that good sandbox gameplay means everyone's experience is different and very giffable
Looks like the switch will briefly fall behind 2017 in week 43 before shooting past it in week 46. Hoping we see a much bigger peak this year, not far from the holiday sales now.

It's a weird type of game. Most of the other Sumikko Gurashi games have been simple puzzle or mini game collections. This one is like a city builder that is neither easy enough for young kids or complex enough for older kids. My daughters LOVED the previous Sumikko Gurashi game (Sumikko Park) so we downloaded the demo for this game. My 9-year old got bored with it after about 15 minutes and my 6-year old couldn't figure out what to do. Neither were interested in getting the full game for Christmas.
Because the PS4 sales in Japan have been low since launch besides some short spikes from some games.
It seems some people still expecting the PS4 to have higher hardware sales.
IMO, it's because there isn't really any ambiguity between 1st and 3rd party. You either hold a copyright or you don't.
2nd week in a row of Splatoon 2 being outside its top 7 lock it held for so long. I suppose Splatoon 2's dominance will end for the holiday season.

I mean Sony isn't worried. PS4 is a huge success worldwide.
But 7 mil domestic when there are only 2 real players is just OK.
For example it still hasn't outsold the PC-Engine (it will).
But since it has nearly all of the domestic 3rd party support, many think it should be doing a lot better.
And people like me really want it to do better. Aside from console wars BS, we as gamers should be cheering for all consoles to be a success. Otherwise this shift to "focus only on the west" will kill a lot of the unique games types I love.
I don't think we've seen a bomba bin game on the Switch yet,
Lost Shpere, Gal Metal, Happy Birthdays
You could get any of those for under 1500yen at one time or another.
But yeah, in general even 3rd party games hold value pretty well on the system.

Megaman X legacy Collection had stock problems for both, PS4 and Switch, versions.
I think it was pretty easy to convince them to have a bigger shipment for MM11.
Didn't even know those games had a large enough shipment to end up in bomba bins lol anyhow with a huge holiday in the works, it's difficult to envision any Switch game having difficulty selling it's shipment.
Vinnk what do you think about Overcooked 2 getting a physical release in Japan, the games have been doing really well on the eShop are retailers going to end up ordering a big shipment for the holidays? By big I mean over >20K

next year is for the spinoff onslaught to begin. A rhythm game and Splat-com tactics lets go
Splatoon 3 holiday 2020 or summer 2021. Give the team some time to do other projects, but don't let the community dissipate between games.

Slap a low price on it and put it on the bottom shelf with it's spine facing the front"
As for Overcooked 2, it is hard to predict. I think the main thing with that game is "Is it different enough from the first game to get more casual fans to buy the second game so soon after the first one". If I was a retailer I really don't know how many copies I would be ordering.
Splatoon 2 might be affected by the paid online.
The first week wasn't really affected, possibly due to game enthusiants that were waiting for the online service, and sales still hold.
But after that, casual gamers might be more reticent to pay for online and Splatoon 2 lost appeal due to its online element.

Still sad about Gal metal, it deserved better :( (being full price didn't helped it anyways).
Hmm, wouldn't the drop of Splatoon 2 be better explained by new Switch buyers going for SMP this week? A similar drop is visible for Minecraft, which I don't think was affected by online. It seems like the casual-oriented games suffered bigger drops than other evergreens.
There are students at my school who have stoped playing the game due to the paid online. 2000yen is not much to an adult with a credit card, but it's an obstacle to a 3rd grader. Even with the point cards.
Not really what your questions was about since these copies were already sold, but just sharing.
There's a massive barrier from 0 to any price so yeah I can imagine some kids just stopped playing Splatoon altogether. It's the risk of introducing a paid system midway, but unfortunate nonetheless.

I'm 29 and I may not have parents to try to convince that they need to pay for something that's always been free, but I have a wife and a joint bank account. I haven't even mentioned it to my wife because it's such a ridiculous situation that I don't know how to go about explaining it to her. It's not supposed to sell like this. A lot of Wii (U) owners had a (3)DS as well.
It's ok for a home console/for the price. I personally expected more and I think it's disappointing that it isn't yet selling like a portable (bad for the market as well), but most people here see it as good thanks to it making much more money than the other systems did.
She's not into games and doesn't know some consoles require you to pay to play online. All she knows is we didn't have to pay on PS3, 3DS, Wii U and now Switch for a year and a half. How do you explain the value when it's nonexistent? My job pays like shit and she's been a stay-at-home mom for eight months so we don't spend even $20 without justifying it. Having to justify paying $20 is maybe not that common for adults but it is for children. Kinda sucks when kids are such a crucial demographic for Nintendo.

Children asking their parents to pay something for them has become a LOT more prevalent in this day and age than when we were kids. Just saying. One of my old school friends has a blue collar job and he says his son needs him to pay for a Battle Pass on Fortnite every so often, and that's been a talking point among peers.

It's not the situation where YOU think it's a good value, it's the situation where you literally just TELL her what is happening with Nintendo's online service. And if she can agree that it's a good idea to go for it for a year, then go for it, but it's not a hard concept to explain.
