For both of the systems, or just the Switch? I would have thought the PS4 version would be stocked by now as it's likely easier/faster to manufacture discs than it is carts.

Neither version. I went to Yodobashi Camera in Umeda, in Namba I went to BIC Camera, Gamers, Sofmap, and some secondhand shops as well. It was just out of stock. Namba and Umeda are in Osaka for reference.

They're not going to make a hybrid console with better than PS4 hardware in 3 years.

They probably will though. Same as the switch sits in-between a ps3 and a ps4, an hypothetical switch 2 would sit in-between a 4 and a 5. And with diminishing return being a very real thing, and new generation consoles probably targeting 4K as a standard, chances are that the gap in power will appear even smaller than what it is for the current switch.

So with Ryza selling around 90k physical per Famitsu in the first two weeks, that'd mean it would have to be at least 50k digital in the first 4 days to match up with the 150k announcement, right? That's quite a high digital ratio, especially for something like a single player JRPG I'd think.

High digital sales for JRPGs seem to happen when popular games suffer from notable stock issues.

Sony will phase out the 4 quickly since the 5 is fully backwards compatible. There's no need to keep it on the market as a cheaper solution
There is every need. There's a huge market WW for the ps4 at $200 or lower. With ps4 plus, digital, MTX and services like PS Now it makes perfect sense.

The people buying into a PS4 after the release of the PS5 are not the customers who will be putting money in digital, MTX or subscription services.

I have a question regarding the upcoming earnings report. How many Switch units has Nintendo shipped the last quarter worldwide, what do you think?

During the same time frame last year they have shipped 3.19 million units. Considering that this year two new models launched and the software line up was significantly better would something between 4 and 5 million be a reasonable result or is that too high?

I think we might see 5M. As you already mentioned with 2 new models (lite in particular), huge September month software wise and also that there's been speculated that initial Lite shipments have been very big due to possible upcoming tariffs.

Eh....why should that be the case ? You think people buying a PS4 are not gonna play Fifa(UT), Fortnite, but a bunch of games during PSN sales or subscribe to PS+ ?

Many casual/mainstream users nowadays are into digital on Playstation with the non-stop sales going on.
PSN is a massive cash-cow for Sony and not only because of the most hardcore users that would get a PS5 day one.

Isn't the question "will PS4 price drop in Japan?" Sony has shown several times that they are willing to keep our prices up and drop the prices in other regions. I don't think pointing to the playing/buying habits that may be happening on a global scale for the brand are necessarily applicable to the habits of Japanese.

I also dont believe in a super cheap PS4 for Japan -since its gonna slow down the PS5 adoption rate and make the PS5 look even more expensive in comparison. I might be wrong though but its probably in Sonys best interest to convince people to just get a PS5 - they are gonna need some kind of install base for next-gen only titles.

I don't think anybody is talking about a super cheap PS4 for Japan but a more affordable SKU.

How is the software situation for PlayStation 4? Is it selling on par with PlayStation 3 or is it significant down from last gen?

The saviour is coming

You know the game could be further along than we think.

They said they were not going to talking about it since YW4 and IE got delayed and that it wouldnt respectful toward people waiting for these games.

With IE getting delayed again, they seem that they cant wait until Spring 2020 to communicate about it.

I think it is a 2020 release imo.

They happened for different reasons for these two titles though,

That's bound to happen when you have 6 times the population.
That´s what i wanted to say to. But it also shows, that Europe is not an easy market for Nintendo..but also a big opportunity...and i think with the switch, they are gaining back ground which they lost with the WiiU! Keep going Big N!

Europe is not an unified country, it's not even an unified economy let alone using unified money, language or laws, and from a market point of view there are huge differences between each country so lumping the whole population together makes as much sense as lumping Japan with the rest of the Asian market.
Of course there is a bigger potential market, but so is there in China or India (and, unironnicaly a fair amount of eastern Europe is, economically, comparable to China).

There are trends though, Japan is a declining market, Europe is slightly growing and that growth mostly come from the eastern countries so opportunities will come from new emerging markets there but they are relatively small and fragmented and, as stated above, not all of them are using euro, most have a unique context (language, law, state power)
It's a case by case basis and not quite easy to manage and I don't think Nintendo has done anything as I know of yet (does Nintendo Poland exist? Nintendo Slovenia ? These two are respectively the biggest and richest eastern european countries), even western countries in scandinavia aren't really properly treated yet.

Most of the gains Switch are getting are on the merit of the product alone, not because they invested in more countries or because of the population growth.

A very good response! I absolutely agree with you. Thatßs also what i meant by saying, that europe is not an easy market for Nintendo, but also a big opportunity. All the examples you have written down, are absolutely true. But i also think, that if Nintendo would have implemented desitnatioins, for example, in poland and slovenia, those opportunities could..i repeat..COULD turn into success.

Should we make bets how L5 is going to fuck this game up? Beside being almost silent on it for some good 3 years.

I'm going with "Multiplatform, PS4 first, Switch later".

Somewhere. I think.
Should add that Nintendo doesn't even specify which countries "Europe" refers to in that case. Just the EU? The continent? What about Russia and South Africa, which are both managed by NoE?

But anyway, regardless of which countries NoE are talking about her, it's still a positive sign that both main western markets are doing better than Japan, where Switch itself is doing great (despite market contraction).

***

Million-sellers for Nintendo games in Europe is basically the same as Japan, with the exception of 1-2-Switch and NSMBUDX (but probably just a matter of time for Japan, it should get there eventually):

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Super Mario Odyssey
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Splatoon 2
Super Mario Party
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
1-2-Switch

I havnt really been following the developement of SoCs, but are there really any SoCs out there today that match (or perhaps even exceed) PS4s overall performance? Which are those (or it)?

Smartest move ever, there will be no competition on 3DS in 2021 from other companies!

Allegedly the Surface Pro X and other high end Qualcomm chips can
Thanks. Thats pretty amazing if it can achieve such results. The PS4 is getting old, but to get that hardware power on a SoC in a portable device would be great. Do we know if Nvidia is working on anything in this field? Just thinking about in terms of backward compability, if it will be harder to achieve BC if Nintendo go with another chip manufacturer.

Don't they have a long lasting contract with nVidia? I think they have to go with them, no matter what.

And about those SoC that can perform as good or better than current base consoles ... the question there is always how these are able to hold near-peak performance over a longer time. Throttling is a thing in those mobile devices, and there's few tablets or smartphones who hold up performance for a longer time.

Ever since Kepler, Tegra is the same arch as their desktop gpus, just fewer cores. My own expectations are them using the upcoming Ampere arch with something akin to A76s for the CPU.

And ray tracing support (yes, this isn't that crazy of a prediction)

I'm not sure about any long lasting contract, but its possible. It would make sense at least. The Switch 2 might sell like 50-100 million+ units, so it would be very good for Nvidia to have such a contract at least.

Good point about throttling. I guess this will be less of an issue in docked mode however.

With 50k unsold copies Ubisoft will have the same drama with EA of seeing brand new games selling for 1000 yen or less.

The two comeback in Dengeki top 50, two games that just keep selling outside of top 30 for the whole year.

42./53. [NSW] Fortnite Deep Freeze Bundle (Warner Bros Japan) - {2018.12.13} - 882 / 49,449
50./59. [PS4] Gran Theft Auto V (Take Two Interactive Japan) - {2018.12.06} - 700 / 45,559

I mean, sure, if you're expecting Nintendo to have a go at that ~500 USD launch price that PS5/Scarlet will likely have. I wasn't expecting them to do that personally, as their userbase isn't typically all that concerned with power and portability already gives them a big edge. It'll be something to look out for once the flurry of rumors for the Switch successor start popping up.

But just a reminder, PS3 launched in late 2006. Switch launched in early 2017, 10.5 years later. Whereas PS4 launched in late 2013 and an early 2022 Switch 2 would launch 8.5 years later, a smaller gap for sure.

They won't have to, they might up the price but it probably won't go past $349.99. PS4 will be a decade old by the time Switch 2 launches and PS4 itself wasn't exactly "bleeding edge" outside Cerny's RAM gamble. You're underestimating what's going to possible in 3-4 more years.

Every discussion regarding Switch 2 seems to assume that it will be a 2022 system. I think 2023 is more likely, and that would put the gap at 9.5 years with PS4 launch, which should make a portable PS4 definitely not impossible I think. We are already seeing claims that 2018 tech will equal xB1S in power, if Switch can get 2020 tech, then going at or above PS4 performance level does not seem too out there.

That's a portable device? There have been a ton of different Shields throughout the years, but isn't the 2015 Gaming one mostly a streaming device that's basically a home console?

I think the point is it uses the exact same SoC as the Switch did. So it's not like the SoC tech itself was expensive at the time.
