Well now that Yokai Watch's accidental success has come to an end what happens next? The 2010s gave us 2 big reliable franchises in Minecraft and Splatoon. What will the 2020s bring us?

So next week depends a lot on how Monster Hunter is holding out.

Harvest Moon and Ring Fit release for that week. Hope they do well. Ring Fit has suprisingly good performance on COMG. (I know COMGs value in predicting is low but still it's already an outlier)

And Dengeki Top50 is also slowly trending towards 50-0.

Which makes me a bit worried for next year.
PS4 has some solid releases until April. But after that, combined with an announced and maybe already revealed PS5 it will be pretty much a Switch-only show until the holidays.

So basically the same as this year ?

Currently at #148. Still a while to release.

Brain Training did make an appearence in Top 100 shortly after preorders started and a few days ago. So far, I'd say its performance on Amazon is positive, due to its status as a casual-oriented title (which means preorders will start increasing closer to its release date), its low price (a retail release that comes bundled with the touch pen while still displaying a < Yen 4,000 price is definitely on the low side of the wide spectrum of pricing ranges in Japan) and the fact that commercials should start airing close to its release date. Still, it'd be better to be cautious about its sales potential: initial indications may be positive for this kind of game, but it's still too early for anything conclusive.

Anyways, despite missing actual numbers yet, Amazon rankings showed that RFA's commercials had a very positive effect on the anticipation for the game itself; we'll have to see whether Brain Training is going to witness a similar phenomenon or not (assuming it's going to get similar commercials).

Comg value in predicting is low, but if a game like this is doing well there, you can expect big numbers.

I never expected Multiplayer VS to be so fun! Certainly one of the best additions to the KING. I'm eager to see what it will do on the holidays

Yeah, i'm curious how Brain Training will perform this time around. If the market will support such game for "full price" (as in not being free or cheaper on mobile). But they release it at one of the best times i think, the Switch is in its prime, and the game is being this released during the holiday season. Its also like 14 years since the DS Brain Training games, so maybe there could be some nostalgic factor there as well.

Between Ring Fit Adventure and Brain Training, i think Ring Fit Adventure has a bigger chance of succeeding because its not something that you can easily get on mobile (i think?).

Fitness Boxing found success inside and outside of Japan.

We'll see if this will happen for Ring Fit Adventure too or there will be a repeat of Labo.

I tried and failed to write a gag post about the continued success of the PlayStation™ family of consoles this week. Sure, the PS4 once again outsold the XBONE by one thousand times and did about ten times as much as another same generation system, the Nintendo 3DS family of products, but they got killed software side. I was trying to work something out where I pretended that Minecraft, the best selling Playstation Vita game in Japan, and DQ XI, another famous PlayStation 4™ title continued to find chart success long after they launched but the words just didn't come out right. YoY it's not looking good for the SONY PlayStation 4™ nor the SONY PlayStation Vita™, which is really in its death throes now. 2020 is going to be a disaster even with hit franchise blockbusters such as The Last of Us 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

So japanese people don't like paying tax too.

People vastly prefer the real Switch.

Dragon Quest XI has good legs.

Iceborne has no legs.

And Yokay Watch is absolutely dead.

I hope anyone here living in japan is safe, what an awful thing nature can be :(

In regards to sales this week, Imo these aren't great switch sales, even taking the situation into account. In last weeks thread, I remember reading that the natural disaster occurred during 1.5 days of the tracking period, so I didn't really expect it to nearly halve switch sales. Before news about the typhoon, I thought everyone was expecting switch to rise or remain flat week on week.

Regardless... it feels weird and wrong to talk about sales like this when such a tragedy is happening :(

Many places were rightfully closed, including some convenience stores. In fact there has been some outcry to companies that were open and forced their employees to come and work. Saturday is probably our biggest shopping day of the week, most sales happen during the weekend, because weekdays we don't really have the chance to go out and shop. This past weekend was a 3 day weekend, so that's probably why sales aren't worse.

Ouch, that sell-through for Yokai Watch... While some of that could be contributed to the storm, but that's...

I was about to make a satyrical post about PS4's fantastic performance in light of the past week's events but decided against it in the end :p

The system keeps beeing significantly down yoy, MHW:I did nothing for it and going with what happened I'm expecting Death Stranding and P5R to have little to no effects too.

That means that for now the last big potential hardware mover is only coming out next march with FF7R part 1.

The holidays are going to be ugly

It's pretty crazy that the WoW percentage drop for both the PS4 and Switch is almost exactly the same.

But yeah, as expected once the MHW Iceborne bundles sold out the PS4 sales tanked. I agree with the post directly above mine. P5R and DS are not going to push hardware. Sony is going to have to stop ripping off Japanese buyers and put their prices in line with their deals in Europe and North America if they want to see any sort of success in terms of units sold for the holidays.

Also it seems that retailers super overestimated that Alliance Alive thing. No idea what gave them any confidence in the first place.

Will FE finally be out of the top 30 next week? it has had good legs for a JRPG and was helped by new hardware but i imagine it will settle at more or less 300k retail in the end, not bad but still need to see those digital numbers to compare to Awakening/Fates.

A price drop might help a small bit but at this point I don't think it will move the needle in any real way. If one wants, they can get a used PS4 for $150/16,000yen these days. And in the run-up to the PS5 when people are unloading their old consoles I can see the price going quite a bit lower than that. (for example when the WiiU can out the price of used Wii systems was as low as $30/3000yen). Unless Sony is willing to do a drastic price drop to impulse price territory I just don't see any long term impact. I think that most people who want a PS4 have one by now or can get one pretty cheap if they don't have it yet. Much like the Nintendo didn't bother to price-cut the WiiU after the Switch was announced, Sony might be smart to just ride this one out rather than risk devaluing their flagship product right before the new one comes out.

Youkai Watch 4 got a good rebounce thanks to the Youkai Watch 1 port release. Still not worth the effort of developing a port however lol.

The evergreen titles generally seem to have been hit 15% to 25%. Since one day covers 14% of the week, and this is the day of the typhoon was Saturday, which is a big shopping day, I think ~15% of the sales drops can in general be contributed to the typhoon.

On Dengeki DQ11S is almost at 400k and I wouldn't be surprised if it's well above that on Media Create.

I was hoping for at least twice this many units sold. It beat out Cendrillion and the Rose of Versailles game, but several of the ports sold more.

I was hoping for at least twice this many units sold. It beat out Cendrillion and the Rose of Versailles game, but several of the ports sold more.

At least it sold around 3,000 copies via Dengeki (they tend to have higher sales for Otome games) :P
I wonder how much the fact Famitsu doesn't track Amazon influences numbers for smaller releases such as otome games.

Hmm, will be interesting to see if they manage to capture the same audience that made Wii Fit such a success back on Wii. Pretty much all casual-focused IP post Wii/DS era either flopped or dropped significantly. Hopefully it doesn't follow in the steps of Nintendo Labo.
While everything is possible, I don't see why it should follow Labo. For most people Labo was all about the experience of creating cardboard thingies, and so you were either in or out mostly based on that. Plus every kit took more and more space that most people simply don't have. Ring fit is a single ring (that takes some space, but it's a ring, so...), and has a long term aim beyond the action performed that is important to many people.

I know I'm buying, but then again I also bought 2 Labo kits (and I am not even in Japan, so even anecdotally this is irrelevant here :-)).
