That Famitsu article really has me yearning for a Tactics Ogre (PSP ver) port/remaster on Switch/Steam/PS4/Xbox. I assume Ogre and Ivalice both fall under CBU3?
That, an FFT collection, even a new game in either series could capitalize on the popularity of SRPGs on Switch, then get ported to other platforms. Lots of relatively easy money being left on the table.

Oh lol I thought it was now the norm sort of like how we get numbers on Thur instead of wed so that's why I was confused. Lol
Wait what, how is it 3 months later already? I still remember the last results

Jesus Christ on a bike this year has totally fucked up my sense of time. Sometimes it feels like days last forever and the other day a week passes by in no time.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe pre-orders are high at retailers and eShop. Since digital will be in 30% range it could have an opening close to 200k, double of Pikmin 3.

At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if Nocturne ends up being the best selling Megami Tensei of 2020.

Zelda Link's Awakening and Three Houses opened to ~140K physical so if Pikmin is getting close to that it's a great sign. Hopefully Nintendo will finally consider Pikmin 4 a "priority" now.

I think the one thing pikmin 3 got going for it is the co op. Yes being on switch is one thing but I'm thinking co op and WoM (with holiday) is going to push it beyond the limit. Any1 thinking possible 750k-1mil lifetime??

In terms of hardware? Yes. Definitely.

In terms of software? Not so much. Software sales on GBA were actually very weak compared to Nintendo's other platforms.

What? No, software sales were prety strong for the GBA. Its tie ratio was fine and it sold plenty of software. Just look up Celine's charts that Silpheed just posted. Remember that the GBA came out in june 2001 and was replaced in november 2004, it had its legs and life cut short.

Excited to see how Pikmin 3 performs. Hoping for the best. Also super curious about Nintendo's Q2 hardware/software.

If that's the case, then 500k will be very doable given the franchise usual legs and the big months for hardware coming up.

That would be quite a bit better than what I was expecting. Hope you're right. It's true that the co-op mode might increase its potential audience, and there aren't any huge games releasing this holiday so medium-sized games could benefit.

Switch is as of June 2020. GBA is one of the worst performing Nintendo platforms when it comes to software since first and third party output was very different back then. Other times 2 decades ago but it never gave serious competition to PS2.

"This week, Ring Fit Adventure won 1st place.
There are few new titles released and rankings from 1st to 5th place are dominated from the standard Switch games.
9th place Ghost of Tsushima and 10th place Pokemon Sword had major updates and it is estimated that sales increased due to that effect."

On a per year on the market ratio no it isn't.

GBA was essentially on the market for 40 months and sold almost as much software as the Switch so far. Had the DS came out later and not under pressure from Sony's PSP the tale would be completely different

GBA isn't close to Switch neither had any chance to follow similar curve if DS didn't come out early.

Err your own graph shows that GBA hardware and software were basically killed by the DS release.

Do not forget that we're now in Winter Time (at least in Europe), which means we get news from Japan in general (including Famitsu Top 10s) one hour earlier. Thus, at 14:00 CET, not at 15:00 CEST.

Graphs show that GBA peaked long before DS was announced.
As much as I respect your contributions Chris, DS was announced less than 2 years and 10 months after the GBA launch.

(...which is actually right when GBA was peaking. See below.)

Your graph is deceptive given that it uses FYs. You see, GBA had an absolutely huge launch. It was bigger than anything they had launched in Japan prior to it.

BUT, its first FY contains only 10 days of sales data due to its launch coinciding with the end of Nintendo's FY.

This means that FY year 2 is inflated (looking like a "peak") since in reality the second FY contains most of the GBA's launch window.

If you look at CYs rather than FYs, it looks like this:
2001: 4.2MM <- launch
2002: 3.4MM <- Pokémon
2003: 3.8MM <- (No flagship hits, nothing noteworthy. Mostly remakes. Software drought.)

Then, right at the beginning of CY 2004 (January 20th, to be specific) and during above noted software drought, Nintendo announced their next generation handheld.

GBA's CY 2004 would have been far higher had Nintendo not:
1. Given it a death wish by announcing their next generation handheld;
2. Caused a software drought by migrating every internal development studio (EAD, R&D2, SPD, NST, and IntSys all had launch window DS titles) and almost every would-be-GBA project over to it;
3. Focused its EOY marketing efforts entirely on DS, beginning more than 2 months before its launch (September onwards, feat. Utada Hikaru).

In spite of being hanged, drawn, and quartered, GBA still managed to achieve a respectable 2.4MM unit sales during CY 2004. And that's not to mention the launch of PSP, which DS itself was a response to.

If DS would have had more time in the oven, and GBA would have had more time to reveal its potential, there is no telling where the peak would have been.

Fortunately Nintendo DS was a success, so in hindsight they made a good (albeit terribly risky) decision.

Very interesting (record breaking) Q2 report from Koei-Tecmo:

- Nioh 2 sold over 1m units
- Fairy Tail sold over 310k units
- Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 7 sold over 30k in Asia.
- They have one new IP forecasted to sell over 5m this FY but they had to delay it. It was supposed to launch next fiscal year but they delayed it to FY2022 (ending March 2023).
Going by their words, it is for more polish + we can expect next-gen versions too.
- Final plan is to have a console game selling around 2-5m copies every fiscal year.

GBA is no match for Switch in term of software sales.
It doesn't matter that GBA was killed early on, the trends are different.

A self-published game selling 5 million? New I.P.? I would expect those numbers from a licensed Nintendo game but do they even report those?
