Y'all gonna be shook when the new Action RPG is also called Xenoblade and has a Telethia in it.
If Takahashi is directing/producing the next game, it will have the "Xeno-" somewhere in the title. He said as much in the past.

Also not sure why some people are assuming this will be an action game. Maybe an Action-JRPG with less menus and stats, yeah, but not a Disaster Day of Crisis-Action-like.

well it is a medieval inspired game, so Disaster is already out the window

Damn, this reminds me that I would kill for a Disaster sequel with Uncharted-kind of gameplay and RPG elements.

Call of Duty had less preorders than usual but weekend growth was very good.

Ark showed legs too, word of mouth is good.

Medieval games dont exactly lend themselves to light gun segments (though there are crossbow games like Link's Crossbow Training). so any game like Disaster is a non-starter
You don't need guns to be an "action" game. The point is that you can make an action game in a medieval setting, and a RPG in a modern one, so that was why I quoted you the first time, I used Disaster just as a genre in the general sense, not because of all the different segments. Just to differentiate Action and ARPG.

People in the forum are assuming the next MonolithSoft game is going to be a medieval action game. I just said, the odds are that the game will be a medieval action RPG instead. If anyone has proof on the former, would be great to know.

my point had nothing to do with setting and everything to do with the fact that it's a light gun game. besides, the line between action game and action rpg is so blurry these days, it feels like splitting hairs when the only difference is your damage output being gradually higher. the method of action is still the same regardless of stat boosting

Square Enix did also note they intend to start bringing a lot more of their Japanese mobile games to the West due to the successful of Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius and Kingdom Hearts.

There are supposed to be a few by the end of this fiscal year (end of March), but I would probably expect games like Star Ocean: Anamnesis and Dissidia: Opera Omnia first.

Do you know how well Star Ocean: Anamnesis did in general? All I remember is the 2 million downloads announcement around december or something last year, and I'm not really sure if that was a sign of it doing well or just decently.

It just hit its highest ever grossing position a few weeks ago, which I think was something like #8 in the charts, and generally gets in the top 10-20 when events happen. It's not a smash hit, but it's a good, stable moneymaker, and one of Square Enix's bigger titles once you get past the handful of flagships.

It will also plausibly end up making more money than any previous Star Ocean or even Tri-Ace game given how long it has been trucking along while maintaining its performance (or even growing).

We've seen a number of Square Enix titles start out in this range and then fade within six months, but that this is still around is a very good sign for it.

Thanks for the answer! That gives me a little hope that the Star Ocean franchise isn't being laid to rest just yet (or relegated to solely existing through rereleases). Hopefully this will make Square Enix consider giving tri-Ace one last chance at a numbered release or perhaps handing it off to someone else like ORCA.

I'm curious to hear your reasoning for why they haven't announced what it's a port of in the 9 months that we've known about it, despite the best possible times to make such an announcement this year (Tales of Festival and TGS) having come and gone.

Jump Fiesta is still coming up and it would make even less sense to not be announced if it was the new Mothership game considering it's meant to be released before the end of March.

Capcom has shipped 0.95M of 2.75M units of software to Japan. Given that there are still a few releases other than MHW. I'd say the range Capcom are expecting for MHW shipped to Japan is between 1 million to 1.5 million units.

They didn't alter these targets though so any games that over or under performed in 1H would skew that remainder.

Sorry for cluttering up the thread with ignorant questions, but do we have a good idea of how receptive Japan is to the GaaS model? Considering the general success of G rereleases, is it reasonable to conclude that further monetisation strategies might compensate (to a degree, certainly not wholly) for the marked downtick in total unit sales?

If MHW does end up being particularly GaaS-y, I'm curious to see what implications that has, if any, for a prospective future Switch MH.

Monster Hunter Frontier is a GaaS title that does well with a small dedicated base. I don't think we've ever had specific figures but Capcom continually highlights it in their IR and they're still continuing support for it.

Part of the issue with a potential monetized GaaS model for World is it makes the full priced G upgrade model from previous entries tougher to sustain. So you're not looking at a comparison to 4m units in Japan but really a comparison with 6.5m units.

Japan loves gatcha games. Japan also loves Splatoon. I think GaaS has a bright future in Japan.

Well, in Splatoon's case the updates are free and so is the online, thus far. In a general sense you'd expect uptake on free services to be pretty high. Is there much demographic overlap between the PS4/MH userbase and the 30s-40s audience that contributes most of the gacha revenue? (I might be mistaken on that latter part)

I do agree with the broad point though, don't get me wrong.

Right, the legendarily fervent Frontier base. That's a good example, thank you. And yeah, that is going to be a gigantic drop-off. Poor Capcom, really seems like they were wedged between a rock and a hard place on this one.

The relatively low number of service games on handhelds and consoles is actually quite odd given how into service games Japan seems.
One thing for sure is that now we know Japanese developers are looking into GaaS. It may take them some time to find out the right service model on console.

You know what's number this lines up with?

Movhizuki' tweet about Amir Anvarzadeh visit to Capcom, which reported 1.5 mil expectation for MHW.

We were unsure what these numbers refer to, WW or JP, and dismissed it...

I still think there is nothing cautious about 1.5mil, as 1.5 mil is rather high for MHW in Japan alone, but then again there us some hype for it in JP from what I see. I expect 1mil+

But it came back again.

The relatively low number of service games on handhelds and consoles is actually quite odd given how into service games Japan seems.
Given how conservative most companies are in Japan with regards to the console space, I am not surprised noone tried it yet. Kinda sad as in better times, the Japanese pioneered the console MMO.

Japan's is still heavily into the RPG genre, just most of them have been playing on mobile. A Japan targeted console GaaS game will most likely be an RPG of some type.

Now, If you are of the view that RPGs of mobile is the same experience as console (I don't), then adding MTX + Long Tail content (Japan's favorite form of GaaS) would just make console RPGs an 6000yen mobage/socialge. Given how niche the console market is now, I think companies who still operate in the console RPG space do not want to risk losing product differentiation yet. Especially true if the said company already have success mobage spinoffs of the console RPG IP.

I think that rise that week is thanks for Berserk collab. I do finally heard more positive wom in jp mobage community recently. The story is getting better and some of early complain seems to have been solved.

Mochitweeted out some Nomura Securities assessment on the state of the Japanese industry. I can only embed so many tweets so I choose to just include the one he translated. You can see the other tweets in Japanese on his twitter.

Some comments by Nomura Securities on the state of the Japanese industry

Based on the pace of 2 million units of NSW produced each month, Nomura is revising the number of NSW to be sold next year from 19 million to 23 million. By March 2023, Nomura expects 115.8 million units to be sold. The margin for each NSW sold is revised upwards from 0% to between 8 to 14%, due to sales of accessories.

(With regards to Nintendo) The JP console market has been stagnant. However, due to the popularity of F2P mobile games, the number of gamers is still increasing. The return of demand by 30-40 gamers who are used to console gaming when they are younger, and the meeting of the needs of the gamers who are in their 10s-20s, are being driven foward (by Nintendo). The whole industry as a whole is positive (about Nintendo).

Koei Tecmo have a high appraisal of the potential of the NSW, (as a result) reaped the fruits of their strengthened development practices and first mover's benefit. With the release of Nioh, Team Ninja is especially promising. The division combines high development capability with the management savvy from old Koei. Nomura is expecting them to have the capability to continue to develop titles that sell between 800k-1 million world wide.

In an online game industry is basically divided between E-spots title, MOBA games, and Free-to-Play games, Nomura continues to have a positive outlook on Capcom, a compay that combines high development capability, and possessing content suited for competitive online play, On the other hand, with regards to the the management/operations issues of the company, it is not yet enough to warrant a reassessment.

It would be amazing to see Switch getting 100 million after Kimishima said that their objective were to surpass the Wii

My guess (based on intuition from my ass) is that it won't make it to 100, but in the event it does, the 'this was expected' replies will be glorious to behold.

Well obviously.
They lost all their easy 3DS Money by combining it with the Wii U. Now every game had to be HD and cost at least 20x as much to make. Plus you can't do a Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 simultaneously anymore.

Selling 100m was the bare minumun to make up for the lost revenue. Call me when it hits 200 or gets big games like KH4.

(This was meant to be a joke, but now I could actually see it)
