I would agree, but we are in a post Minions Japan. They and their humor has been adopted especially by young children and many teenage girls. They may find rabbids cute this time around.

It is starting to appear on some preorder charts two months before release. Nintendo is going to market it, it is going to do fine.

I am not so sure. It is placed in January where the major releases for PS are (MHW etc), and strategy games traditionally face a very hard cap on how much the can sell in Japan.

Edited due to the inaccurate use of terms. It should be "Strategy" and not "SRPG"

Yeah, I think it will do well for a rabbids game with Nintendos help and sassy princess rabbid.

What is that hard cap? Are you considering FE to be an SRPG? Would that make it around 500k, or does it somehow break through thanks to wives?

Edit: Sorry for the rapid fire questions, genuinely curious.

Chris, what do you expect for this one ? He appeared on the preorder charts of some retailers this week and it is a high quality title with Mario in it. Should we consider it, sales wise, on the same level as Mario RPGs ?
My name isn't chris but begins with ch :)

Q1 had been looking pretty light so I was curious about, but Japan at least has M+R so that will be interesting to watch, even if the rest of the world is light.

Part of thinks it'll do better than xenoblade, but I'm not sure. Which preorder charts have it at the moment anyway?

125 FW.
260 LTD

There is always the possibility for 1-2 eshop titles that can be revealed in January and released almost immediately but unless Kirby is stated for this FY and another title takes its place for Easter I don't see anything else at retail for Q1.

I really hope not.
FEW could've easily been delayed imo. Especially if Q1 is going to be that bad.

heck, FEW might've benefitted from it too.

I apologize, I actually wanted to say "Strategy" instead of "SPRG". The closest analogue to this game that is made in Japan would be Valkyria Chronicles and Code Name Steam. As far as I know, Japan has never been very receptive to such type of games...production values, waifus and aesthetics be damned. That is probably due to its PC market being relatively niche.

This, combined with the major releases on PS in the period, and the possible negative branding of the Rabbids, makes me feel it is a tough sell. It is hard to explain the Rabbids appeal thing, but my gut feeling is that Rabbids is a less Japan-friendly design than Minions. It is not "cute" like the Minions is. Think about "Cartoon Network-type" aesthetic and its reception in Japan,vs generically cute western mascots like Felix the Cat and Mickey Mouse, vs Japanese mascots

He said Rabbids Land territory. Do you expect the game to sell sub 15k or something like that ?

I take it as him meaning it will generally under-perform, like FEW. Not the actually literal RABBIDS LAND BOMBA territory. Not even FEW ended up in genuine RABBIDS LAND BOMBA territory.

If it was only for the Rabbids I am not sure the game would have sold this much. I don't need to remind you the reaction after the leaks. The game was a success because of its quality and Mario mainstream appeal.

Oh okay I get it. Well, Switch will be about 4M sold by then with a million-seller Mario game. The Mario audience will be at least curious about the game, so it will be up to Nintendo to convince them to buy it.

The time for a new version is soon as neither is looking to have any kid of legs.

Also a snapshot of what the "Amazon state" of the two games is like 4 months after release...

And if I may add, I think it'll do relatively even better during the Holidays.

Thats not a question. 1-2 Switch, Arms,Pokken,Mario Odyssey,Zelda,Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 is all going to fill the holiday chart. This is not counting some third party like Bomberman,Xenoverse 2 and Puyo puyo also gaining legs.

The rest would probably be filled by Style Savvy, Animal Crossing and some other big title like Mon Hun.

Don't forget Pokemon US and UM ;) What PS4 game do you believe can benefit from the holidays ? DQXI ?

Bomberman probably wouldn't, it hasn't been in Top 50 for a while IIRC.

DQXI is fully dependent if the second hand market havent crater its leg. But i can see it sold relatively well if there is some deal given by retailers.

Itadaki and Taiko seems to be the bet for games on Sony platform to benefit from holiday legs. Those 2 title is usually what most would buy for kids as present.

Bomberman probably wouldn't, it hasn't been in Top 50 for a while IIRC.

Is that so? I thought i remember seeing it last time in top 50. But that is already quite some time. I do believe that Bomberman Switch will perform moderately well in the west though during holiday. I had seen the game keep being restocked in my country. It is kinda a must have for Switch owners as they wanted to relieve the nostalgia of Bomberman of their childhood.

By releasing their 3 Musou games the same day they were obviously not betting on its first week performance. I am still puzzled about this haha.

This makes as much sense as their Horse Jockey game release schedule. Surely, they don't see them as very important releases or they wouldn't have done it this way,

Good legs for Fifa Switch, its LTD is already 221% of its FW. The coming Switch shipments may help it to maintain its legs until the end of the year. It bodes well for the futur iterations if they are a solid effort.

I don't think Japan matters much for EA for FIFA (its EU). They already stated their intention to not really support NSW going forward. The sales in Japan is not enough to convince them otherwise, or they wouldn't have canned PC Madden!

I can't understand the reason why Koei decided to release 3 musou ports all in the same day.

Did they really believe that those will sell well?

I'm going to be truthful. If they release Orochi over here I would buy it again. Though, I have to question the fact that I didn't know about any of these musou games. Maybe they were hoping for FEW runoff.

So if the Switch hits ¥22,000 what are the chances it does 10M a single year in Japan?
Right now it's on track to sell around 5.5M for it's first year at ¥29,000.

I'm sure where else the vita audience would go. An expensive high end handheld seemed right up their ally outside of extreme platform diehards. Probably a slow transition but imagine most that care about portability will move over and I imagine Nintendo is counting on that.

Guess we''ll see more rubbing games in the future.

Waw that's quite affirmative. It is a huge number but with the Switch being sold out since launch we don't really know its potential. By how much the demand is superior to supply do you think ?

I checked the DS peak year and it is about 9M. With the contraction of the market it seems even tougher to beat. We'll need more data about the crowd the Switch is attracting to make an educated guess.

Maybe i was a little hopeful. It's not near to zero. It's zero.

Just my opinion.

I mean I expect Switch to outsell the 3DS in 3 year in Japan. For it to do it, it would require DS like sales in 2018/2019. I also think we should expect a price drop for the Pokemon launch, as Nintendo is ordering larger amounts, I think manufacturing costs are going down and Switch is become more profitable for them but what they'd really want is a large amount of paid subs for their online service as soon as possible.
