Even if it did, Nintendo is aiming to have a recurring source of revenue to reach levels like PSN and XBL have achieved.

Nothing wrong with that in my view; but their service is sub-par and this has been discussed beyond the most dedicated video game forums.
Also, I was a kid a little bit more than 2 decades ago, and if after buying a switch and some games, I came to my parents asking them to subscribe to a paid online service to continue playing my games, I doubt they would have liked it.

Yes that always happens your not going to constantly have 50% a userbase buy 1 game every week. The software catalogue has expanded massively since Splatoon 2 launch. You can see this happen with every multi-million selling game in Japan for decades.

Yep. So like I said, and like you seem to agree, it's losing steam overtime. I never said it wasn't normal, but it's undeniable that it's happening; and the paid online service only makes things worse.

And again the age old wisdom applies correlation does not necessarily equal causation, hence why people were asking for more evidence of the earlier thesis.

Like I said in the other thread, Splatoon is loosing steam as compared to last year, and despite the Octo-expansion releasing a few months ago. It's totally understandable and the game can still be qualified as an evergreen; but its green is slowly fading. It'll still make good numbers during the holidays and will most likely hang around the top 20 for a good chunk of 2019, but a decreasingly smaller proportion of the 40-50k new Switch buyers each month purchase the game and with the content updates stopping next month, I doubt this trend will be reversed. My bet is on a spin-off in 2019, a sequel in 2020, or possibly both. My hope is that they announce 1 or 2 more years of support for the current game and focus on making something different than Splatoon.

Splatoon remains one of the most popular kids franchises on the Switch, together with Minecraft, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe it will do big numbers after Pokemon Lets Go & Smash bundles launch.
How big those sales will be depends on the amount of Switches but all three games should be able to maintain high attach rate in the next few weeks. I don't expect either of these three games to drop below 20% attach rate in the next 9 weeks.

Week 35 to 44:
Switch Hardware - 376.523
Minecraft - 100.823 (27% attach rate)
Splatoon 2 - 94.268 (25% attach rate)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 82.980 (22% attach rate)

Last year Nintendo sold about 1.5M units of Switch hardware between Week 45 2017 and Week 2 of 2018. This year I expect them to sell over 2M, 20% attach rate on this type of hardware sales would mean that these three titles might surpass 400K in the next 9 weeks. I think its obvious we would see a meaty update for Christmas(clothes, new kits which utilize the new sub weapons/specials, and personally I think they might release two of the unreleased Splatoon 1 maps)

There's no denying Splatoon 2 sales have slowed down, especially looking at how it fares agains MK8D vs how it did a few months ago.
Saturation may be a thing for the existing user base but there's just a smaller amount of people buying a Switch that goes with Splatoon 2 as their "go to" game right now, paid online is without a doubt one of the factor the question is just by how much.

Nocturnal can show us his numbers and attach rate like he did many times before, the downward trend is real and it might be the kind of thing that define if Splatoon 2 ends up with a 4.5M or 5.5M LTD (shooting in the dark there, don't take these numbers at face value)

That's still a massive success by any metric, so no downplaying this just discussing numbers.

EDIT : Well who's just above me :p
Could you dig up historical attach rate if possible?

The drop has been stronger after the introduction of the paid service, if I am not mistaken. Non-online evergreens on the other hand are unfazed. We should plot the number to have a clear view, but I do not know if a summary of the data is available somewhere and I do not have the motivation to go through all Mediacreate threads for the past 2 years.

Hi Chris, I was wondering if you know anything about how many Splatoon 2 Switch bundles are still being sold. Has the prevalence of this bundle decreased over the last number of weeks or is it still as prevalent?
From what I know Nintendo has limited the shipments of Splatoon 2 bundles. Smash and Pokemon bundles will be first priority at holidays, Fortnite is unknown variable.

It's good to see an increase two week before the megatons start to drop. It's a good sign.

It's also a good thing that Playstation has its own holy trinity this holiday (Spiderman, RDR2 and Blops4) it will be interesting to see how high will these titles end up selling.

My guesses
COD 800k
RDR 500k
Spidey 400k

BOTW, Kirby, MK8D and SMO all have seen drops in their sales levels during the last couple of weeks. Splatoon 2 has experienced the strongest drop of the bunch, but all have had their weekly sales level dropping.

Not unless you can rule out other explanatory factors, like the decreasing prevalence of bundles that Chris just confirmed.

Do you seriously think that Nintendo would reduce the number of Splatoon bundles fearing to cannibalize their other bundles? Genuine question because it seems quite far fetched to me, and it doesn't make much sense from a business perspective.
Also, other games are dropping less while NOT having bundles.

Am I really seeing people here arguing the paid online hasn't had a negative effect on sales?

Don't forget it's not the fact the paid online exists, it's the fact that it exists and is considered a substandard offering with poor WoM.

The service is cheaper than their competitors, which you have conveniently left our despite the discussion beyond most game forums.
Also do you think kids around the world don't ask for XBL or PS+ subscriptions? Don't be foolish.

Splatoon 2 is experiencing a drop in Japan comapared to previous quarters, it's in the official data Nintendo released last week (but at the same time, is still the best selling title of the current FY in Japan, even higher that titles that launched during the current FY).

However the overseas shipments are unchanged.

We can interprete it in 2 ways:

1. The online paywall is hindering the game only in Japan
2. The game already shipped 3.08m copies in Japan alone, and with a Switch userbase of 5.52m, literally anyone who may be interested in Splatoon 2 already owns the game.

The new wave of fresh Switch owners coming with Let's Go and Smash will tell the answer in the next 2-3 months.

Isn't Splatoon also popular with local play? Kids bringing their Switches to school and just playing some matches sounds like a good enough value. I don't think the subs will have a lot of effect on the sales. The people that value online play enough will buy the sub because its rather cheap to begin with.

True, but as you said, Splatoon is dropping more, and that extra impetus could be due to decoupling from bundles.

Not sure what you mean by the first bit, but it's pretty standard that one bundle goes away when another comes around. As a result, Splatoon not being bundled heavily anymore is not strange imo (and Chris said he saw evidence for it).

Splatoon 2 in H2 2018

Weeks - Splatoon 2 sales / Switch hardware sales = attach rate.

Code:
Week 27+28 - 36.792 / 94.476 = 38.94%
Week 29+30 - 42.257 / 102.115 = 41.38%
Week 31+32 - 42.619 / 100.942 = 42.22%
Week 33+34 - 40.224 / 100.906 = 39.86%
Week 35+36 - 31.357 / 85.664 = 36.60%
Week 37+38 - 27.299 / 76.471 = 35.70%
Week 39+40 - 23.439 / 88.719 = 26.42%
Week 41+42 - 16.060 / 86.218 = 18.63%
Week 43+44 - 13.073 / 81.602 = 16.02%

Now guess when did Nintendo Switch Online launch?

18 September 2018, which was in Week 38. The free trial of 7 days was over in Week 39.

I see, thanks for the information! Do you think that could explain the more pronounced drop in sales for Splatoon 2 compared to other evergreens?
Maybe. The game is over 3m and will get another big boost in holidays. It won't be selling for over, there's a limit at how high LTD can go and is directly connected with size of userbase.

Nintendo online service being subpar is just mostly internet talk.
Kids don't give a shit what service it offers, it'll just be a matter of if they can convince their parents to pay up 300 yen per month.

Are some people realy think that Splatoon 2 or some other games will have strong sales in its 2nd year like it did in 1st year?

Its logical that buy time every game will sell less and less compared to launch and 1st year.

But Switch numbers don't seem so strong as many are saying. I mean, it's down YoY in this week and YtD

When the sales of Switch hardware increase dramatically at Christmas and therefore Splatoon 2 is not in a state of saturation of the market as now all this thread will seem very silly.

Call of duty breaking past 400k.
Red dead redemption 2 moving towards 200k.
Super Mario party reaching 300k.
Evergreens filling out a large portion of the rest of the chart.

Switch hardware sales increasing while ps4 hardware seeing a decline.
Good to see switch hardware increase, a bit surprised personally though that the continued performance of cod and rdr2 didn't help with ps4 hardware movement.

It's good to see an increase two week before the megatons start to drop. It's a good sign.

It's also a good thing that Playstation has its own holy trinity this holiday (Spiderman, RDR2 and Blops4) it will be interesting to see how high will these titles end up selling.

My guesses
COD 800k
RDR 500k
Spidey 400k
Those numbers seem incredibly ambitious, maybe with digital.
