Switch might have already crossed 3m YTD.

It is going to be tough but I think we'll have it over this milestone when Famitsu will publish the results.

Then the battle with 2018 will get interesting.

If flat YOY, then Switch 2019 sales should be around 4.5m (a little below).

4.5m-5m should be the final range.

Nintendo should exceed 4,5m this year
Damn, 2007 was crazy. Well over 10 million hardware from Nintendo, and 5 million from Sony hardware in the same year. Shows how times have changed. I wonder how the whole dedicated gaming hardware market will look in 20-30 years from now. If its just downward spiral or if things will change for the better.

EDIT: Even Xbox 360 did shy of 250k that year.

For high budget games it doesn't. Switch losing all the third party big sellers from 3DS era and still selling similar software shows that except Nintendo smaller publishers that were absent before have found success at the system.
NSW is indeed edging out 3DS on the software front in Japan (in spite of lower HW cause it has higher tie ratio).
I'm wondering though if this is due in big part to Nintendo first-party software (and Minecraft).

Personally I think that DS selling 8.36M in 2006 tops everything in that chart.
PS4 has sold 7.62M after 5 years in the market (well, as ending 2018).

EDIT:
Top 3 yearly HW sales:

DS 2006: 8.36M
DS 2007: 7.17M
3DS 2012: 5.50M

It's for both Switch and PS4.
But like Disgaea 4 that came out last week Playstation owners have already played those games on the PSV and the PS3. Not sure what's the incentive to buy them again.
Huh, I see, thanks. Not that COMG is an indication of... well... anything at all, but I'd have expected PS4 version to still be close to switch. There's a lot of PS4 players who haven't played the games yet (or maybe played one or two of the trilogy), and a number that would double dip surely.

So it seems Ring Fit Adventure had indeed restocks in some chains. Therefore the drop won't be as big as we thought initially.

A simple comparison between sales doesn't make much sense nowadays.

Even looking at 3DS vs. Switch doesn't give a full picture of what's going on. Switch has definitely less support from third-parties in terms of major offering but that speaks more about how the market has changed in the past 7-8 years rather than a weakness of the platform. In fact, for example, Switch has two of the major IPs of the last decade (Fortnite and Minecraft).

Also, games are sold at a much higher price and digital is stronger than any other Nintendo platform before.

Certainly not digital only games which aren't counted in Nintendo's software shipments.

I've run some math and as December 2018 Nintendo first-party million sellers (just 7 games) accounted for about 51% of the total software sales in Japan (15.46M/30.33M).
Until December 2018, Nintendo had launched 21 first-party games in Japan.

EDIT:
Factoring in other Nintendo games for which we have incomplete shipment data for Japan as December 2018, the total grows to 18.69M that is about 62% of the total software sales for NSW in Japan (15 games counted).

EDIT2: Though launch aligned (as December 2018 for NSW, as december 2012 for 3ds) 3DS had sold about 6M more games than NSW.

I'd rather Bamco and Ganbarion first figure out how to make good Once Piece games again. They might strain their brain if they think too hard about a Switch version.

"Death Stranding appeared at 1st place. It's the latest work by Hideo Kojima, known from Metal Gear series. The title has reputation of being able to experience something unprecedented and is expected to sell for a long span.

Need for Speed: Heat was ranked 5th. It can be said that is selling well at GEO.

Sales of Ring Fit Adventure are accelerating at the market.

This weekend the first masterpiece of the year, Pokemon Sword / Shield, will be released. I expect the excitement of the entire game industry."

This looks to be the situation for software:

Death Stranding at 100-150k opening
Ring Fit had big variability at shipments among retailers or even cities, but sales remained high in the end.
Luigi's Mansion and Mario & Sonic had small drops
Persona 5 Royal had big drop

Is DS really expected to sell for a long period or is it GEO wishing it does ?

On the one hand they could have some knowlegde about how's the game holding. On the other hand they might be using this sentence to explain a low start, like they already did many times.

Great for Ring Fit btw.

So I've checked and compared the shipment sales data for Nintendo games between 3DS and NSW in Japan launch aligned (September 2019 for NSW, September 2013) to understand if NSW first-party games are lifting above the total software sales.
In fact NSW total software sales edge out 3DS total software sales launch aligned despite 3DS selling about 3 million more HW (and high selling third-party games are fewer on NSW compared 3DS).

3DS in Japan as September 2013:
HW: 13.33M
SW: 44.84M
First-party software sales* / total software sales: about 36%

Yp2Fw3v.jpg

NSW in Japan as September 2013:
HW: 10.00M
SW: 44.93M
First-party software sales* / total software sales: about 53%

It's all about word of mouth ultimately. And it's very unpredictable right now.

I'm gonna guess it's probably going to be very frontloaded though.

Seeing where things are at now Switch could come close to 3DS's total in Japan just based on it's current crop of known evergreens.

12m by the end of this fiscal year and say 3 more good years of 3m+ will let it surpass PS2 at least.

The collapse of Yokai Watch, loss of exclusivity of Dragon Quest and departure of Monster Hunter, I think Nintendo has rightly so bet the farm of their own software. After Ring Fit I expect at least 2 more new franchises out of Nintendo to help ease the pressure of their older ones to carry hardware.

The more important thing is that many of these former Sony exclusive developers can't ignore Nintendo going forward. That's more than enough to strengthen Nintendos position in Japan even more.

Ironic to say this on the week of Persona 5 Royal's release lol

Personally I think that DS selling 8.36M in 2006 tops everything in that chart.
PS4 has sold 7.62M after 5 years in the market (well, as ending 2018).

EDIT:
Top 3 yearly HW sales:

DS 2006: 8.36M
DS 2007: 7.17M
3DS 2012: 5.50M
Yeah, the DS was crazy. I had actually forgotten (or didnt knew) that it sold that much in 2006 and 2007. I just looked at the total hardware sales overall, and 2007 seems to be the best year of them all for all hardware combined :)

Really surprising that so many third-parties thought the Switch would fail, and although they were wrong, its effects have hurt Nintendo, themselves and gamers.

Really the only continued surprise is Namco's lack of full commitment with games that should run on the Switch no problem despite otherwise being one of Nintendo's closest allies in the field. I think everything after Soul Calibur 6 development wise should have been in the pipeline for a post successful Switch world, but they'll probably just keep up with late ports of Code Vein and Kakarot and a maybe a few more like One Piece World Seeker.

I guess the rising development costs and Nintendo's falling hardware numbers at the time made it an easy decision to wait and see.

Switch has blown past all expections for it, except maybe that one Kimishima quote where they hoped it would do "Wii-like numbers". Things were dire before the Switch launch

Namco's strategy is clearly to use it to get people to double dip. They obviously see it as a handheld first and are purposely staggering Switch releases in order to encourage people to buy their games twice.

Even The Pokemon Company thought Switch would fail, and pushed the series towards mobiles as a result.

Now they're paying the price for the bad bet they made.

Is DS really expected to sell for a long period or is it GEO wishing it does ?

Maybe they got a big shipment and they hope the game has some legs so they can sell it.

It's ironic from the 5 mllion sellers Nintendo created the last 10 years, 2 are on Wii U and none on 3DS.

Ironic indeed.

3DS had much more competition on the software department than Wii U. On the other hand, some older Nintendo IPs did unexpectedly pretty well there, like Luigi's Mansion. It's true that Nintendo experimented a bit more on Wii U, while they were safer on 3DS. I feel that Nintendo was expecting a bit more from Kid Icarus though. Maybe a million in Japan too, as it was pushed a lot in 2012.

Hmm, according to CoroCoro, Puzzle & Dragons Gold is now a January game. Really odd month to release it, might have wanted to delay it until GW imo.

Also, December 27th, new Yo-kai Watch anime series based on latest movie will debut.

Genuine question: do we know whether P&D Gold is a retail release or a digital-only one? The announcement-to-release period length looks like the one you'd expect for a retail release, but the release being "just" January, and its announcement in November make me think it might be otherwise, somehow. But I guess it wouldn't be the first time we get release dates being announced not too far from the actual release dates themselves in Japan either.

Somewhere. I think.

Genuinely got no clue. I'd be surprised if this were digital-only given the target audience, but who knows. Last game at retail didn't do too hot.

Also, new Doraemon game from FuRyu out on March 5th (Switch).

As always, this thread likes its doom and gloom, just yesterday some peeps were saying December looks really poor line-up-wise. Well, of course, that was because Capcom were yet to announce they're coming to save the day with some super hot, instant-best-selling titles.

On December 13th, they'll release Best Price re-release of the following games:

- Resident Evil 2 (PS4), 3990 Yen + taxes
- Devil May Cry 5 (PS4), 3990 Yen + taxes
- Resident Evil Revelations Collection (NSW), 3990 Yen + taxes. Of course, still with mandatory download for Revelations 2.

In light of this, safe to expect +160% YoY for December.

Or not.
