I was reading yesterday thread wiiu will dominate Japan

Tbh it has ingredients of success to do better in JP but it didn't work out
that's what i thought would happen. in hindsight it makes sense it failed (for various reasons), but yes i do think its central gimmick should have appealed to japanese consumers. of course, it's a moot point now, since switch has essentially perfected what the wii u tried to do.

I kinda wish there were games that could connect two switches together, with one being docked, and one handheld, which could replicate the Wii U experience. it would be really useful for some software

I wouldn't be surprised if Creative Assemble was SEGA's part of traditional videogames that makes the most money. I think Total War is bigger than anything we've recounted.
Honestly total war deserves it's success
im pretty sure it was owned by EA or activision before SEGA
it's definitely one of the most complex yet user friendly and quality strategy game franchise

The total war franchise is the Gold standard for strategy games

(total war shogun 2 is one of the best games of all time imo)

actually do we know how popular total war is in Japan?

the latest games don't seem to have a JP translation, so I would say not too popular?

I do wonder why they came to them with acquisition offers instead of buying like a couple games from each studio to be exclusive to their system, there's no way any dev except for maybe the most desperate would take that offer, Xbox would not be coming with a position of power in that negotiation unless they could promise the games would also be able to come to switch or something
Building relationships with studios and cultivating a fanbase for an IP on your platform takes time, and Microsoft aims for the shortest and quickest route possible.

The issue they seem to encounter in Japan is that the dev scene is very concentrated around big, historic publishers who have hands in many businesses. There is not a lot of independent studios laying around like in the West for them to snatch.

Yeah there are indies in japan but you could probably count the amount of successful and sustainable one on 2 hands

unlike in the west where you could count the amount of successful indies on 2 hands and 2 feet in binary

I guess marvelous is the smallest studio that has well known franchises, anything smaller doesn't have enough irreconcilability.

Edit i meant to say recognizability but im not editing that out.

There aren't more pro-Sony developers with important positions in Japan than Harada and Nagoshi. They built their careers based on PlayStation systems and don't forget that.
Harada, sure. With Nagoshi, it's moreso a case of Sony helping turn his Yakuza pet project into a relatively successful global franchise over a decade of investment. I see Yakuza as Sega's version of Pikmin - something they let Nagoshi do as a reward after he proved his worth with other games. His career was built in the arcades and probably peaked with Daytona USA.

Yes, Daytona USA is probably his biggest achievement.
I'm also sure Sega upper management was quite grateful for his contribution to put Shenmue on shelves after the development was a bit in disarray.
There was also that weird time in early '00s in which the Sega most popular console franchise in US after Sonic was Super Monkey Ball, alongside Crazy Taxi (and the sport games but those were developed by a western studio).

On the same note I find pretty disheartening how Suzuki nowadays get mostly remembered for Shenmue instead of his amazing achievements in the arcades.

Mary Skelter Finale so low, I wish it did better. At least the second one did well on the West, so Finale should do well too.

so if harada is "tekken man", what should we call nagoshi and kondo?

Or is kondo so irrelevant that we don't care

Pleasantly surprised by Pikmin sales and extremely happy for it.

Can't wait to see next gen craze in media create threads. It's gonna be quite fun.

How long do you think the craze will last? I feel like come January we'll just be shitting on Sony/PS5 for a looong while
There's nothing to really talk about with the PS5 outside of launch sales and we have no idea how Sony will be handling stock in Japan. There's no notable games dated for Japan.

That Shadowverse ranking would probably suggest something 20k-30k, right (assuming Tsutaya represents the final order, of course)? Seems like the expected debut.

I don't understand why Square Enix gets lumped in with these other devs that don't support the switch, the posters in this thread more than anyone know better than that.

Yes, SE switch support has been great since before launch
Let's not pretend Switch doesnt have limits for its support (especially tech-wise)

I really like their exclusive strategy. More is on the way for sure (there is a rumored The Wold Ends With You sequel) and I hope they go even further and make exclusive Final Fantasy and Kingdom Heart games.

Somewhere. I think.
Serkan Toto predicts further declines coming for both PS and Xbox in Japan, not that anything different is expected. Another analyst from Ace Research Institute in Tokyo lives in his own world.

You weren't kidding.

"The Xbox has a chance to make Japan its second-largest market after the U.S. if it takes the right steps for years to come,"

I too would love to be paid to spout such non-sense. Unless they end up buying the PlayStation brand in Japan, there's little chance of that happening. That would be the craziest thing to happen to the Japanese market.

he said something like "it woudn't make happy switch owners only"
"Would the world end with you all if someone were to directly leak something in this thread? It can wait until next year if that's the case, and it's not like it only would be relevant to just this console eventually anyway."

Sounds very low, but do we have something to contextualise just how low? Like, would this be 20k low or more like 5k low?

Oct 25, 2017

Sure but that still seems disproportionally low, especially in the launch period.
Makes sense to me. Use the price as a marketing point, low production run for it anyways, but keep the possibility of the cheap price in the lead up to release. You take less loss on a loss leading SKU.

Repeat till the component prices allow you to break even and then immediately just flood the market.

Yeah, I think that's exactly it. They're taking a bath on it and it's really for that "starts from x price" marketing line.
