Looks like we should keep seeing good Switch shipments through the end of the holidays. Mario is showing pretty solid legs as well.

Yes. The Switch is still supply constrained.

I know no one asked yet, but it is always asked each week and I just wanted to get it over on the first page of the new thread. It is supply constrained this week just as it has been every week since launch.

Carry on.
Nice to see somr confirmation, thanks.

Nothing weird about a system that has historically been number 1 worldwide, help grown dozens of Japanese franchises worldwide, is the best selling system worldwide and is receptive to Japanese software to be getting the best Japanese third party support.

;)
Hehe.

At this rate GTS won't even sell 200K, if it's selling 5K with 50% off there is not much retailers can do to move more.

Of course not. Or maybe 250k at the very best.
Everyone saw it coming really, the global sales likely won't be pretty either.

Damn poor Sonic Team. They will have to do some real soul searching for the next 3D Sonic game. Perhaps they should try to farm it out/team up with someone to help them.

It also didn't help to release it so close to Mario Odyssey either I imagine.,

True. Switch will be a monster this holiday window.

Oh, I was under impression that ~25k is the baseline number. Glad it is not the case then.
I guess Nintendo will ride the wave all the way to the holiday window.
It was the baseline for shipments. As Vinnk said, it has enever not been supply constrained, and big number are needed to alleviate the issues most likely.

Smt did well at the end. It bolds well for SMTV.
Hopefully Xenoblade 2 can do 200k+.
I don't see Xenoblade 2 even reaching 100k first week, maybe not even do the same numbers as the previous entries. But I hope I'm completely wrong.
However... I see it having the best legs.

It's not at the same damage level like west but the expected explosion of Swtch shipments this December in Japan will take sales away from other systems at hardware and software. Waiting for next year is likely the best scenario even there.
It was not discussed much in the past due to Nintendo inability to ship more Switch but a booming console will inevitably "suck air away" from the remaining mildly selling consoles (PS4, 3DS).

Yeah this is true too. I would assume as well since publishers like to stack Q1 for Sony games this also played a part.

I guess even MonHun brand can't compete with Nintendo Xmas effect in Japan.

On a more popular system maybe. On the PS4? Nope.

I've said it last week, I'll say it again: I'm always kinda shocked to see how well CoD does in Japan. Has a legit chance of reaching 300k on actual retail sales.

Black Ops III has sold about 383k in retail. Considering how so far WWII is outselling it (Black Ops III was at 187.446 after two weeks) it might reach 400k in retail. Add stronger digital sales too and it will be best selling COD this gen in Japan.

Edit. Forgot bargain edition of Black Ops III so total retail for it is actually 383k and not 365k in retail.

aha over 1k xbox one X sold thats impressive
Well...

Yes and no.

Someone could argue that selling 1k of anything that isn't actually being sold (in store) is good, as it looks like retailers were only doing sales via pre orders, but it's still only 1k vs 23.500 Xbox One sold back in 2013 during the first week in Japan (which was already way down from the 360).

It's actually awful.

Oh wow, really? Damn! CoD has clearly earned it's spot among the Japanese gamers it seems. Well done for the franchise, not an easy task that.

It's already happenng at same degree with 3DS and PS4. I don't think going against Switch this December will be a smart move after so many months of shortage.

MonHun used to be part of the Nintendo Christmas though. This Christmas will be the first real test for MH with the release of the MHW preload PS4 bundles.

January software release will help it on Japan with PS gamers. However, in the west....

Black Ops III has sold about 365k in retail. Considering how so far WWII is outselling it (Black Ops II was at 187.446 after two weeks) it might reach 400k in retail. Add stronger digital sales too and it will be best selling COD this gen in Japan.

What this tells me is that the PS4 base in Japan seems have been assimilated into the giant blob that is "western gaming tastes and preferences". This trend started in PS3 years and have accelerated since.

"Yoge wa kusoge" is dead...I think?

I think it probably means a tougher time for very Japanesey stuff to sell, unless it also hits global mainstream tastes.

Deculture A GO GO!

That said I wonder if Star Wars will open big too., maybe 150k? I mean the only thing the shitstorm in the west over lootboxes is that craptons of people care for the game enough to make noise (and only a few of the wouldn't buy in).

The game is receiving quite a negative feedback in Japan.

Apparantely the true ending is the anime's ending, which doesn't resolve any plotpoints, and the general execution is worse than the anime, which wasn't all that great either.
While I am not too worried about the sales (I think most non-Steins;Gate semicolon games perform about the same) hearing that it is worse than the anime stings a little.

COD has sold well in Japan since PS3 era. Best selling COD is still Black Ops II which sold 565k units in Japan but yes WWII sales are pretty good for COD in Japan and if it has really good legs it might reach even 500k in the end with digital which would put it as second best selling COD in Japan (MW2 sold around 500k too).

BTW, thanks for posting lists with the data I collected and crediting me, means a lot to me! :)

I hope others appreciate my work. I'm always open to suggestions also! I was thinking of adding the prices to each line, is that important enough? I left it out as they were not included in the Dengeki lists which is actually what inspired my collecting in the first place! :P That's why I trim the fat from Famitsu and MC to keep them all consistent.

Before the move to 3DS the games did fine during the holidays on PSP. Grsnted PSP was a sales monster and PS4 is more of a kitten that's not really the point.

I think on a stronger platform a holiday release would be fine. But PS4 just isn't that platform. I imagine the preload should do fine though.

So side note but is there any reason why the Taiko games are always exclusive to one platform?

That was a different time, when the HH market was 50 million and HC was 30 million.

About 8 out of the 20 best selling PS4 games in Japan are western developed.

That is still showing an increasing trend. PS3 top 20 only had 1 western-developed game in it.

So yeah, "yoge wa kusoge" is eroding amongst the PS4 gamers. Maybe by PS5 it will be western domination.

Plus, you keep seeing good sales for these western made games, despite not much hardware increases.

These PS4 gamers are consuming these games at high rates.

1.344 Xs? Ouch, so not even every gaming journalist in Japan bought one? ;P
I'm pulling this out of my ass, but 5$ that in the same time frame more 500$ leather trousers from Bavaria, Germany were sold in Japan than the X.

Yeah I was expecting this game to resolve a lot of unresolved questions that anime had but seems that's not the case at all.

As a person who thought the show had some potential it saddens to see them mishandling the cool premise.

I can't wait for the Christmas just for the Nintendo boom. Will be exciting to see what they can ship and sell during peak season.

One thing is that a Nintendo needs to ship everywhere. Hopefully, Nintendo remembers to ship enough to Japan so that Japanese developers can finally feel optimistic about the console market again.

Most already do feel optimistic, looking at most of the annual reports this year, but going for a slam dunk victory lap will definitely help.

Pokemon is the Trumpeter. The one that heralds the Nintendoom.
